Understanding Illness from the Stress Connection

The Mental, Emotional, Physical, and Spiritual Components of Disease

When people think of stress, they are normally only considering those things that they find aggravating or upsetting. They are not considering the cumulative impact of a host of other factors–even little things that over time add up and overwhelm the body’s ability to process, detoxify, rectify or cope.

A more accurate view of stress may be ANYTHING (physical, chemical, electrical/magnetic, spiritual as well as mental and emotional) that consumes more energy than it brings in. Consequently, even some foods and happy events are stress inducing.

When more energy goes out than comes in to more than compensate, illness occurs.

 

Things that stress or disrupt the body system includes pathogens, allergens, toxins in the food, air or water, and EMF (electrical magnetic frequency pollution). They include pharmaceuticals including antibiotics, vaccines, and even approved medical and dental procedures or treatments. Dry-cleaning or household chemicals, personal care products, microwaved foods, processed or GMO (genetically modified) foods, food additives, heavy metals, city water, chemicals such as chorine or fluoride all stress the body as does heavy physical exertion or workouts. Cell phones, cell phone towers,  and EMF (electrical magnetic frequency) pollution are a problem. Then there are the pesticides we might use ourselves or which have been sprayed on the foods we eat or the foods that the animals we eat have ingested. Amalgam dental fillings and root canals, x-rays, chemotherapy and radiation air pollution, chemtrails–all take a toll on the body. Eventually, it is too much to handle and the body breaks down.

 

Here are the key points:

Stress causes every illness, and every illness creates more stress.

It is both the chicken and the egg. It is a self-perpetuating loop.

Illness results from more stress coming in than the body can handle.

Think of it as a bounced energy check–more energy is being demanded from you and going out than you have the reserves to cover.

It takes more energy to heal than it does to stay healthy in the first place.

It is not as easy as putting back the amount that caused you to bounce. Just as with an overdrawn checking account, there are fines to pay, and time to clean up the mess.

Stress is neutral–it can be from something “good”

For example, getting married, having a baby, moving into your dream home or job, getting ready to go on vacation are all very demanding, hectic and therefore, ‘stressful’. Stress is not just from something “bad”, such as the loss of a job or relationship, or routine annoying as with the daily commute.

A ‘stressor’ is anything that demands energy to handle/process.

Like a checking account, there needs to be sufficient reserves. When the energy reserves go into the “red”, illness results.

The final stressor that pushes the body into illness can be just one more thing too many.

It can even something very minor that you used to handle with ease before–the “straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Stress can come from:

• poisons in the air: inside or outside pollution, “sick building” syndrome, smoke, dry cleaning chemicals, household cleaning chemicals, perfumes, synthetic pillows or mattress 
• poisons from what touches your skin–chemicals or dyes in hair, nail, skin products, cosmetics, clothing
• allergens
• foods that are difficult to digest or food combinations that make digestion more difficult
• poisons in the water--chloride, flouride, bacteria, chemicals, heavy metals
• poisons in food–sugar, additives, coloring, preservatives, pesticides, as well as medicines or genetically modified foods fed to the animals we eat
• medicines and medical/dental treatments or procedures
• time stress and multi-tasking
• frustration
• unhealed emotional issues
• worry, fear, anger, grief, and other upset
• negative beliefs and judgments, such as this shouldn’ t be happening, people should/shouldn’ t ___, or this is bad/wrong/awful.
• too much or too little of anything: sleep, food, water, silence, sunshine, time alone, recognition, money, responsibility, activity, play
• too little meaningful interaction with people or with use of your abilities
• lack of meaning or purpose in life
 • lack of connection to others and larger spiritual dimension                 • lack of balance between work, rest and play, being alone versus being with people, sound versus silence, mental versus physical, material versus spiritual, inside versus outside  

√ The body knows how to heal itself. When given what it needs, it always moves the body towards health.

The body needs energy to stay healthy and to heal if it is sick. 

Whatever you do to relieve stress frees up energy for the body to stay healthy or to heal.

Whatever adds to your stress makes it more likely that you will get sick and it will be harder to heal.

The body breaks down at it’s weakest link.

The weak link may be genetic, or from a prior illness, injury. It may stem from overuse or abuse of certain organs or muscles. But it may also be from emotional/ mental issues or personality/family patterns.

Hard work doesn’t kill you. Frustration does.

 Work that provides meaning, purpose, and an outlet for one’s gifts, talents and creativity energizes the body. Work that is just a paycheck without providing recognition, usage of one’s abilities or creativity, or a way of learning or developing further, drains energy.

Stress on one system helps to relax another.

If you are consistently working your muscles, do something mental as a hobby. For example, do crossword puzzles or quiz games, take a class, read a book. If your work is primarily mental, do something physical to relax–hike, garden, build cabinets, ride horses, ski, golf, etc.

√ You are not upset by what happens to you, but by what you think about what happens to you. It is the JUDGEMENT that is the problem.

There is the ACTIVATING EVENT– that which you think is stressful.
Then there are the BELIEFS ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED, which are the real cause for
the EMOTIONAL CONSEQUENCES.

 

BASIC RULE:

Emotions follow thought!

Change a belief, and you change the emotion.

Change how you look at things and be free!

 

The Three Stages of Stress 

Hans Selye, considered the ‘Father’ of Stress Management, said that there are three stages of stress leading to breakdown. He called it the General Adaptation Syndrome.

1. The Alarm Reaction:

At this stage, symptoms first appear–sweaty palms, perspiration, butterflies in the stomach, anxiety, rapid heart, etc. Next, a person enters 

2. The Stage of Resistance:

Here the stress symptoms may disappear and resistance rises above normal. The person appears to have control of the situation. He is “handling” things. The person is coping. Finally, the person enters

3. The Stage of Exhaustion:

Now, the original symptoms of the alarm reaction return irreversibly and exhaustion of the body and death may result. The person cannot get rid of the symptoms, but must wait to heal, and replenish himself as much as possible in the meantime. The breakdown may be caused by just one more thing, no matter how insignificant that one thing may be, it is too much to bear–”the straw that broke the camel’s back.” The person is unable to cope, and can only rest and wait to build up his reserves of energy again.

Basic Requirements for Healing

1. Find a way to bring more energy into the body.

This will include more and better sleep, good nutition, clean air, being in beautiful surroundings or nature, being with people you love and care about, doing what you love, happy music, fun, laughter, sunshine, exercise, Reiki or other energy work, prayer and a deep spiritual life.

2. Find a way to stop energy from leaking out

Eliminate as many of the multiple stressors as you can, heal your pain pile, and get rid or reduce the energy draining activiites or people in your life.

Source Energy Medicine

10422248_328327904010993_3462995313165762810_n I just returned from New York after studying with Stephen Joseph Pollitt, originator of Source Energy Medicine, for 2 + days. It intrigues me to consider that you might be able to imprint water with a strong, clear intention, and turn it into ‘medicine’ for the healing of specific health issues as well as for general physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well being. To check out Stephen’s work, see here.

While I have read his book and took a weekend training, that may not be enough to accurately explain his work. So please keep this in mind while reading this article, and visit his own site for direct information.

Pollitt refers to the work of Masaru Emoto, who demonstrated that the crystalline structure of water can be powerfully effected through both spoken and written words, music, videos, photos and prayer. masaru_emoto (pix taken from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masaru_Emoto)

iu Emoto took a word such as love, peace, joy, or hate, anger and placed it on a bottle of water, then froze it, and looked at the structure under a microscope. Positive words created beautiful snowflake-like hexagonal shapes, whereas negative words created blobs. Emoto’s book, The Hidden Messages in Water, is fascinating, widely available on Amazon, and he also was featured in the movie, What the Bleep Do We Know

12744014_551158805061234_8314712491893192159_n As our bodies are mostly water, Stephen Pollitt’s premise as written in his book, Heal Thyself, is that it is possible to positively affect health and well-being by drinking water that is imprinted with strong positive intention for that end. However, unlike Emoto, who was writing a single word or phrase on a water bottle, Pollitt writes out very detailed description of what he wants to occur, and  assigns such intention with an 8-digit number sequence derived through dowsing. The number assigned becomes the “word” for the formula. He then creates a label with this number, adds the infinity symbol, plus a symbol for Om that he believes calibrates with very high frequency, and finally pastes this label onto a water bottle. As with Masaru Emoto, the water “reads” the label, which imprints the intent upon the water. Pollitt then recommends that you drink the water over a period of time until you see the desired results. Results vary from immediate, to days, to weeks or months up to a year. In general, the results are designed to be gradual and gentle without adverse ‘healing crises’. However, the remedies can be speeded up for an emergency situation.

Pollitt believes that everything has frequency. In this, he is in agreement with other dowsers and those who practice radionics, those who believe that you can determine the frequency of both health and disease, and make adjustment in those frequencies to get the results you want. For example, a person practicing radionics would determine the frequency of a pathogen, parasite, agricultural pest, or the frequency of ideal life force of the person, animal or plant, and then broadcast that frequency.

Like those practicing biodynamic gardening or holistic health, Pollitt believes that if you raise the overall frequency or vibration of the targeted organism (animal or human), that that organism will be able to fend off disease. However, Pollitt seems to distinguish between a person’s overall frequency calibration and his frequency in various areas of functioning. For example, he described one highly spiritually evolved Yogi who nonetheless had multiple health challenges because his frequency in those areas where he was experiencing dis-ease was low. Pollitt believes that if you raise the frequency high enough in all areas of your life, you will become incompatible to dis-ease.

In calibrating frequency, Pollitt has accepted the logarithmic scale of Dr. David Hawkins, author of Power vs. Force.  However, Hawkins is himself a controversial figure as you will see in this article  and this oneHawkins is an American psychiatrist, author and spiritual teacher. Hawkins uses arm muscle testing technique, borrowed from Applied Kinesiology (a form of body dowsing) “to absolutely and objectively test the truth of any statement, calibrating it on an arbitrary logarithmic scale of 0 to 1000 (and sometimes higher), with different states of consciousness — shame (20), apathy (50), fear (100), anger (150), courage (200), reason (400), love (500), peace (600), enlightenment (700-1000) — located on different points on this scale, forming a linear and fixed one-dimensional “map of consciousness”. This model of consciousness has metaphorical parallels to science’s map of the electromagnetic spectrum, and it is not dissimilar to Ron Hubbard’s Scientology emotional tone scale and The Sedona Method’s hierarchy of emotions formulated by Lester Levenson, whom Hawkins worked with quite closely for a while (although he now classifies Levenson as a “fallen teacher” – link.)”

So while I as a Dowser believe that dowsing is very helpful as a diagnostic tool, and a tool for profound mental and emotional healing, it cannot be used as an infallible method to determine absolute truth.  And this is the argument against Dr. David Hawkins and others placing too much authority on the dowsing response. Responses vary with energy level, mood, allergens, atmosphere, and many other variables. Hence, determining supplements, medications, treatments, remedies through dowsing alone should fall into the category of “can’t hurt”. One benefit to Source Energy Medicine is that there are no negative side effects. As Pollitt himself says, the worst that can happen is nothing. Furthermore, each remedy in Source Energy Medicine has a description so you can use that to determine what you would like to take. But there is also a recommended protocol. Dowsing is not necessary.

A major contribution of Pollitt’s work is his emphasis upon decreasing subconscious mind resistance to healing, and on increasing allowance for healing to occur. As a hypnotherapist focusing on unconscious healing modalities, I feel that this is critical. While clients consciously want to obtain positive results, many times they are sabotaging themselves through secondary gain, as well as non-beneficial beliefs or judgements. Such negative beliefs include “nothing can help me, nothing works, I just have to live with it (pain/disease), all the people in my family get ___,” etc. There are many ways to shift beliefs, both consciously and on a subconscious level. Pollitt claims that Source Energy Medicine assists in transmuting unconscious resistance and increasing allowance of healing.

Pollitt comes across as a highly principled man dedicated to help his fellow man to heal in a simple, inexpensive, graceful way. He feels healing should be accessible by everyone throughout the world regardless of their finances. So while I do not agree with some of his strong spiritual bias (Course in Miracles, Conversations with God, Ester Hicks’ Abraham, many New Thought teachings, David Hawkins), I respect and trust him as a man of good will. 

Source Energy Medicine has testimonials of positive healing benefits. And because it is free to both download the book, labels and instructions in using them, I consider it easy and safe to test it out for yourself. Just preparing and drinking the formulated water will activate your Placebo Response (see also here), which is helpful in it’s own right. But drinking it is also opening your acceptance of the positive intention or ‘prayer’ behind it. Consequently, I have made a commitment to myself to do it for up to a year to see if it has any benefit for me. If nothing else, it is a good excuse to drink more water.

Prayer and Healing

While this is an excerpt from my book, Reiki Path to Transformation, Volume 3, it applies to prayer in general, hypnosis, dowsing, energy healing, telepathic healing, etc.

Larry Dossey, M.D. in his best selling book Healing Words, The Power of Prayer and The Practice of Medicine, carefully documents the scientific studies that prove that prayer works. According to his research, prayer works regardless of the distance between the person praying and the one being prayed for, or any electromagnetic influences. “Nothing seemed capable of stopping or blocking prayer. Even when an ‘object’ was placed in a lead-lined room or in a cage that shielded it from all known forms of electromagnetic energy, the effect still got through.”

He classifies prayer that works falls into two categories, non-directed and directed prayer. Both work, but some work better for different personality types.

Non-Directed Prayer

This is prayer on behalf of someone without attachment to a specific outcome. One might simply pray “Thy will be done” while being confident that on some level they are always safe and loved regardless of what happens. Non-directed prayer takes the long view of eternity rather than dwelling on the immediate crises. Yet praying for healing with “Thy will be done” does bring healing to those in immediate crises. Dossey prays “May the best possible outcome prevail.” You might also say “into God’s hands and keeping I place this ___ (person/situation).”

Directed Prayer

This type of prayer very specifically asks for and visualizes specific outcomes. Directed Prayer is combined with clear visual images of what you want plus a positive, confident feeling that it is possible. For example, if a person has a broken leg, you might imagine him at some time in the future running, playing tennis, dancing again with a smile on his face. If you use suggestions like any of those below, be sure to also include mental pictures that indicate that there has been a successful outcome.

  • “Guide the physician’ s knife to completely remove all cancerous growth.” Follow with image of smiling patient living his life in the future and saying “feeling better than ever”
  • “Dissolve and remove all tumor.” Follow with image of popping balloon, and body now vibrantly alive and healthy
  • “Make new neural pathways to carry messages from the brain to the muscles.” Follow with image of smoothe, easy movements.
  • “Reattach the pieces of bone so that it is strong and better than ever.” Follow with image of that happening and person doing whatever fun activity would assume that full healing has taken place.

Prayerfulness

Dossey relates that “a simple attitude of prayerfulness–an all-pervading sense of holiness and a feeling of empathy, caring, and compassion for the entity in need” sets the stage for healing to occur. Countless other spiritual healers agree.

Centering, letting go of other thoughts or distractions and being totally focused are also important. Some healers prepare for healing work by first focusing on their connection with the Divine, on the interrelationship of all living things, and finally, on the perfected state of being they want for their client/ patient in an unconditional loving, compassionate way. Reiki practitioners like other spiritual healers understand that they are only the conduit for the healing energy, but that the source comes from the Source of All That Is.

It is recommended that in addition to the specific concern, that you pray for healing on all levels for that individual. Love those for whom you pray without attachment. In other words, you want what is in their best interest, not yours. You may not know what is best. And especially, pray without any fear. Call in spiritual assistance.

While healing work is done with slow preparation, prayer, in general, can be as fast as a thought and a flash of the healing image. Anytime you think of the sick or challenged person or situation simply imagine a positive outcome with the words, “the best possible outcome prevails.”

Why is it that saints frequently die of awful diseases?

Holiness, empathy and compassion are abundant in saints who are noted for healing others, and yet they themselves may later suffer from the very diseases they have helped alieviate. Dossey says: 

“there is no invariable, linear, one-to-one relationship between one’s level of spiritual attainment and the degree of one’s physical health.” 

Some people may knowingly or not take on the sufferings of others. Empaths may focus on the problem and identify with the suffering, feeling it in their own bodies.

At the end your day, disconnect from preoccupation with both your own problems and that of others. Imagine that on some level everyone is fine and in perfect health. Break all psychic links with the sick and troubles in the world. Go to sleep feeling gratitude, thinking of someone or some thing that makes you happy. These uplifting thoughts will stay with you through the night, assisting your sleep so that you have the energy to be of service tomorrow.

 

Aligning Prayer with Self-Hypnosis Principles

Prayer follows the same steps as does self-hypnosis: you must ask for the positive thing that you want in the present tense (not some future time), and believe that it is possible to receive that for which you are praying. Prayer is a focused call for help and an expectation of receiving that help. State your request as follows:

  1. Word your request in the present tense, i.e., “My body is healing now” (don’t say ‘will’ heal because your inner mind does not act on future tense). Or use the good for all suggestion, “Everyday in every way I get better and better.”
  2.  Use only positive words of what you want to happen, not what you don’t want to happen. For example, instead of praying to be less tense or fearful, pray to be calm and relaxed.
  3. Word your prayer only in a way that is believable. If you pray for something and at the same time doubt that it can happen, your doubt will cancel out your request. If you cannot believe in or imagine a cure, imagine the next step that you do believe can happen. For example, if a person is in a hospital bed with a broken leg in a cast, imagine him home on crutches, using a walker, or walking with a cane. Make a picture of the best outcome you can imagine. Later, go beyond that as your belief enlarges.
  4. If you are doing directed prayer, be specific about that for which you are praying without being inflexible. Some people finish their prayer with “this or something better” or “according to my/his/their highest good.”
  5. Engage your positive emotions and faith in your request being granted. Believe that it is possible.
  6. Turn your request over to God (release it) with confidence that you are heard and that your request (quite small in comparison to creating the universe) is infinitely within the Creator’s power.

COMMON STEPS FOR PRAYER HEALING WORK

Purification 

Cleanse the body with fasting, prayer, sweat lodges, juicing, bathing. Cleanse the thoughts and emotions. Be silent. Wait with patience. Isolate the self in meditation or retreat, nature, vision quests, away from distractions or ordinary life. Take corrective action for any wrong action. Ask forgiveness of others. Make restitution.

Holding a Willingness to Heal, Change or Release

Come into alignment with thoughts or actions that lead to health. Ask Spirit to remove any blocks known or unknown to your full healing now. Be willing to surrender your pet negative judgments, resentments, anger and fears. Be also willing to clean up your relationships, examine yourself honestly, eliminate your delusions, addictions and self-destructive habits.

Healing always requires change.  

Chinese medicine believes that illness is synonymous with blockages of flow, with resistance to change.Remember that it was patterns, habits of mind or body repeated over time that created the problem. There is also a relationship between real or imagined unscrupulous behavior with its resulting guilt and call for self-punishment, and with illness. “The body doesn’t lie.” Ask for guidance to know what to do, change or release.

• Knowing

Know with certainty that the help you seek is present, that answers or solutions already exist, that the thing you pray for already exists. This becomes self-fulfilling prophecy.

• Union

Become one with what you are praying for. Become one with the power, wisdom, love of whom you are praying. Become one with whom you are praying.

• Making the request

Ask and listen for spiritual guidance, divine intervention, healing and help. You can also ask for a clear sign what is right and when it is right.

• Giving thanks

Give thanks that the request is already granted before the results are seen. Giving thanks sets up an attitude of gratitude which is always a blessing to us. It also gives us hope and encourages us to continue to take positive action. It strengthens our belief and faith.

• Taking appropriate action

Do your part of whatever seems needed or appropriate increases faith. It is acting as if it is going to happen.

• Illumination, or receiving the answer

Rollo May in his book,  The Courage to Create, said that mental breakthroughs or creative insight come after a period of intense concentration and then mental rest.

 

 • Charging

Charging means lending an emotional charge to your intention. For this you need

  • an idea,
  • an image representing that idea, and
  • emotional energy to carry that idea to fruition. I recommend you use love, gratitude, joy.

• Connect to the Source of healing energy

Send this energy to the person or situation you want to receive it. Imagine the person/s connected directly to this energy source.

• Break psychic contact with the person for whom you are praying and the problem

ILLNESS as CHOICE ?

TO BE OR NOT TO BE — SICK 

Putting forth the premise that illness is a choice may sound harsh. But think about it this way: Long before you get sick, you are entrenched in hundreds of little habits–habits of eating, exercise, work, lifestyle, smoking, drinking, and habits of how you handle stress, conflict and negative emotions. Even how you think is largely a matter of habit. And because thoughts determine emotions, emotional states and attitude are a result of habits of mind.

Choices become habits, and habits become destiny

All habits come about through choice–little decisions made again and again, perhaps multiple times daily until they become automatic and start to run your life. Thoughts are a choice as are attitude, beliefs, judgments, and decisions about how to interpret events and experiences.

Consequences

There are consequences to your choices, consequences that include your health, mental and emotional well-being, or lack of same. However, at the time that the choices were made, you may have been unaware of those consequences or you lived in denial. After all, when you picked up your first cigarette were you really paying attention to the health risks? Did you think you could outrun the bullet, and that the health warnings didn’t apply to you? Did you just figure on having just a few, and quitting tomorrow? Were you bargaining, “please, God, just let me have this one ___ (cigarette/drink/ice cream sunday) and then I’ll stop and be good!

Now, years later you may become aware that it has come time to pay the piper. What do you do when you don’t like the negative consequences of your choices? How do you unravel bad habits, bad decisions, limiting beliefs or judgments for which you are now paying dearly?

Making different choices

Healing requires change, and change can be scary.

If a health problem is a result of long standing habits and patterns, healing will always require changing those habits and patterns. The necessary changes may be all pervasive, even drastic, and can be just as scary as the illness itself.  Carolyn Myss in Why People Don’t Heal and How They Can, says that

“many of us are almost as afraid of healing as we are of illness.”2 

Even though a person may be aware of the risks, and their doctor may have recommended dietary, habit or lifestyle changes over the years, only when there is a clear cause and effect relationship of certain habits and choices with the negative consequences do most people begin to make even the smallest, yet alone big changes, that may be necessary. This follows the Law of Inertia, a body at rest tends to stay at rest, and a body in motion tends to stay in motion. It takes more energy to shift direction than to continue to do what you have always done.

How committed are you to heal?

Are you willing to do whatever it takes? And if you aren’t, can we then say that you are choosing to remain sick?

Myss asks the following:

If healing required moving to another part of the country, changing your attitudes toward others and yourself, changing all your physical habits, such as diet and exercise, being alone for a long period of time, or going on a retreat to confront your shadow, experiencing illness as a way of healing mentally, emotionally and spiritually, or losing everything familiar to you — home, spouse, job–would you do it?3

John Harrison, MD, in Love Your Disease–It’s Keeping You Healthy says that

Anybody prepared to make fearless decisions in their best interests will avoid all major illness and most minor ones as well.”

Illness provides benefits called secondary gains

There may be positive payoffs to being sick. For example, illness may get you out of a job, activity, situation, relationship, or a responsibility that you hate. It can provide an excuse not to do, or not to go where you don’t want, or to do something that you do, for example, to stay home and watch television. It may provide financial awards, temporary or ongoing income, medical benefits, and time off from work. [See article “Secondary Gain – a Gain from Pain”

Illness may get people off your back. It may provide an excuse, and special considerations or privileges such as handicapped parking. It may allow you to avoid responsibility for yourself or others. It may cast the die–letting the disease or condition make a decision for you when you are too indecisive or weak to do it on your own.

Illness may pull a family or relationship together, or provide a way to check on the feelings of others. It may let others know that you need them, providing them with an important role, and helping them to feel good about themself for helping you. Illness can be a way to get people to come to visit, and to obtain desired attention, emotional assistance, concern, sympathy, demonstrations of caring or love. It can be a way to get people to do things for you, even getting waited on hand and foot as in hospitalization.

Finally, a health problem can be a form of self-punishment, a way to atone or pay yourself back for guilty thoughts, feelings, behavior. As Myss says, 

Illness can…become a powerful way to get attention you might not otherwise receive”, and “as a form of leverage, illness can seem almost attractive.”

Benefits to illness can be secondary or primary to the condition. They can be conscious or unconscious (below the level of awareness). As in which came first, the chicken or the egg, did the person get sick in order to get his needs met? Or did he get sick as a result of bad habits or some other reason, and then notice that there were some payoffs in being ill?

Harrison says that

The person is needy, rather than sick….People get ill to get what they want… People do not get what they want…so they become ill.”5

Basic needs,  such as attention, solitude, caring, must be met one way or the other. And if illness is providing those needs, the person must feel secure in meeting those same needs, just as easily as before, but now in a healthy, constructive way. Otherwise, he will resist getting well, or he will get sick again to get his needs met.

To break the negative cycle, both the pain of the illness needs to be great enough for the person to be motivated to change, and the person must have hope that making changes will make a positive difference in their health. Without hope or positive expectancy, why bother to even try?

Harrison further states that

“Disease is both self-created and self-cured…. Illness is the physical and psychological result of unresolved needs, not a malfunction of a machine caused by unknown or external factors….We give ourselves illnesses in order to ‘take care of ourselves’ psychologically.”

Harrison and Stephen Parkhill, author of Answer Cancer, refer to an unspoken contract between doctor and patient that says the following. The doctor, in exchange for money, will remove unpleasant symptoms for the patient without upsetting the patient’s chosen lifestyle or habits, attitudes or feelings, judgments or beliefs. The doctor will participate in the illusion that the patient is a victim and not responsible for either the disease or its removal and return to health. The doctor will take over responsibility for the patient’s health and all decisions relevant to his health care.

Harrison puts it this way:

“I have consulted you to have my need recognized, my suffering validated, my pain removed and my disease retained. In return, I will support you financially and give you status commensurate with the powers I ask you to exercise.”6 

As Harrison further states,

“It’s this need to be taken care of by people more powerful than ourselves that leads us into taking some decisions that are damaging to us in the long term.”

This agreement between doctor and patient may eradicate symptoms, but miss the cure. It has all the dysfunctional psychodynamics of the Victim-Rescuer-Persecutor Triangle7 –the patient being the Victim, the doctor/therapist being the Rescuer, and the disease/condition being the Persecutor. Roles can switch if compliance in the game is unsatisfactory. Patients need to get out of the game and take back responsibility for their illness, and take back their power to heal.

Parkhill believes that cancer is created because of an unconscious need for self-mutilation and self-punishment. He believes that ailments in general come from an unconscious need for self-punishment, self-mutilation, or limitation. While I think it is more to it than this, I do agree with his belief that guilt, blame, criticism, fears, such as the fear of abandonment, or the fear of not surviving because essential needs are not well met, set up later illness. And to this list, I would add many other emotions and internal conflicts could be involved depending upon the illness and where it is located. 

Unraveling Bad Choices

Postulating that illness is a choice, even if it is an unconscious one, implies that there is a different choice or choices that can be made that will leading to a different outcome–one of potential health, vitality, and overall well-being. Once clear about the negative consequences of what you have been doing in diet, lifestyle, holding onto negative emtions, etc., you may be motivated to change.

Make a commitment to take positive action, start with making the most obvious and the most doable changes, and the changes most likely to make the most difference.

There are many ways of tackling this.

Self-hypnosis really helps to focus on priorities, increase motivation to do what you need to do, change negative thinking, and to release stress. Thought Stopping and Switching is a powerful tool to mental and, therefore, emotional control. Emotional Freedom Technique, Emotion Code, and Tapas Acupressure Technique also are invaluable in releasing stress, self-sabotage, and healing issues. Hypnosis, Neural Linguistic Programming, dowsing, my own Infinite Intelligence Process [see here], are all powerful in both locating and resolving issues.

Through hypnosis or Time Line Therapy you can go back in time to a choice point and make a healthier, more constructive choice that leads to health. I like the unconscious healing modality taught to me by A.L Ward, but those of other hypnosis mentors such as E. Arthur Winkler or Walter Sichort and his protege James Ramey, did something similar.

Then, you can imagine traveling into the future to a time when the problem has been satisfactorily resolved, find out how that was done, and bring that solution back to the present moment along with the resources to do it. This is called Future Pace, or Crystal Ball, or Magic Wand — all hypnosis and NLP techniques.

Or again with hypnosis, you can imagine going into a parallel universe in order to change direction to an alternate reality more of your liking. Go the station platform and change trains.

7. The Victim-Rescuer-Persecutor Triangle is typically seen with alcoholics, drug addicts, gamblers, and many of the chronically ill. The Victim uses his problem to manipulate and control others into taking over responsibility for him, bailing him out of problems, and meeting his emotional and perhaps financial needs. The Rescuer initially feels good to be of help, but later comes to feel as if he, himself, is being victimized by the very person he is trying to help, who has takes on the role of Persecutor. Rescuers are caught in this trap because they do not feel good about themselves unless they are helping those they consider more unfortunate than they. Most people in the helping profession as well as nurses and others in the healing arts start out as Rescuers. Hence, they are vulnerable to being used and abused by others. Awareness helps, but the biggest cure for this is high self-esteem and healthy boundaries.
