Applying what you know (or think you do!)

The bad news is that when you write a book on anything, especially mine entitled Releasing Anger Without Killing Anyone, the time of sustained focus required to write a book may bring about an experience to apply what you know (or think you do).

(Don’t you just love the Law of Attraction!)

The good news is that you do know (or should know) something to harness that energy constructively and then move it out of your system more quickly than you did in the past.

Think of it as the universe giving you AN EXAM. 

Here is an OPPORTUNITY to prove:

  • Do you know what you are talking about?
  • Or have you just been spouting nice sounding platitudes, airy-fairy nothings, intellectual but useless, impractical, untested, unproven ideas and information? 
  • Do your techniques actually work and make a positive difference?
  • Is there more yet to learn?
  • How can you set things up to avoid similar problems in the future?

So on June 29, 2017, a tenant, as she was moving out of my house, left water running in the upstairs bathroom. Gallons of water poured down from the second floor to the first floor living room, and down to the basement below. Rugs including a large Oriental, a mattress, books, furniture and other things got wet. Almost half of the living room ceiling had to be replaced, and as repairs were later made, drywall dust was everywhere. Most everything  had to be boxed up and moved out of the living room along with the furniture.

Likewise, two basement rooms were disrupted in order to mop up the water and get things out of harm’s way. So not only was my living room unusable for more than a month but so was the dining room and hall, and those two basement rooms as well. 

Immediately taking a long view of the problem, I knew that regardless of how much time, energy, work and out-of pocket expense would be involved, regardless of the bad timing and other demands upon me both health wise and financially, the problem would be eventually fixed, and the house would be restored to it’s former beauty. In other words, the problem was temporary. That tenant is now fully gone from my house, and I have a new, wonderful person living here. I had workmen who would help me clean up the mess.

fullsizeoutput_2cI knew that I needed to harness the anger into constructive action. So I called the appropriate people to get the help and advice I needed, and start and supervise the work.

In the meantime, I did a lot of the Infinite Intelligence Process that I wrote about in my book Accessing More to both dump stress and access my internal guidance and wisdom within.

I did EFT tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique), dowsing for emotional healing, and meditation because I did not want the anger to poison me or cause my health to further deteriorate. Plus, I wanted any and all possible contributory factors resolved.

I also did not want to project my anger back to my former tenant as it would then be a curse on her head. Because I believe that we are all connected, the corollary is that what I send out comes back to me.

To help shift my attention, I focused on what I had to be grateful for. What was left? What was good? 

  • Well, certainly the damage could have been much worse.
    • Luckily, I was only away from the house for an hour. Many other precious items in my living room and basement were not ruined even if some got wet, but would have been otherwise.
  • Help was immediately available. 
    • Two farm workers were here that day who immediately came in and helped move furniture, mop up the water, take the worst of the ceiling down, and set up fans to dry everything out to lessen the chance of mold.
    • I quickly located and hired a drywall laborer to reinstall new sheetrock and to paint.
    • A friend put me in touch with a cleaning lady who came after the ceiling was repaired. She helped me take down, wash and rehang all curtains in the living and dining room, wash, dust and vacuum everything on the ground floor and upstairs hallway. The net result was that I ended up with a much cleaner house.
    • My insurance agent came quickly, and although I did not file a claim for various reasons, I got the information I needed. 

Throughout the process, I asked myself:

  • What could I learn and how could I grow from this experience?
  • How I could prevent something like this happening in the future?
  • What I might have done differently that might have prevented it?

In other words, I was actively looking to pull a blessing out of the experience. 

To get all my anger and everything off of my chest I wrote a letter to my tenant. But after writing and rewriting it, I read it to a close friend who is also a lawyer for her input. What upset me most was that my tenant took no responsibility for her actions. Instead she was just blaming me. I felt it necessary that she understand the ramifications of her negligence so she be more careful elsewhere. This stopped the imaginary conversations of what I wished I said to her from continuing to loop in my head.

I learned long ago that:

  1. writing letters that you do not send acts as if you did. It allows you to get everything off of your chest as if you really did say what you wanted to say to them.
  2. pause before sending anything in writing, and then only if you must. Less is better. The written word lasts forever, where spoken ones are quickly forgotten.
  3. Groaning over damage done and what cannot therefore be changed (what’s done is done) is a waste of precious energy. You need to conserve that energy in order to stay healthy and to address the problem.
  4. Complaining to people who cannot help you is an immediate, very short term vent, but counterproductive otherwise.

In fact, complaining or venting beyond the immediate time frame can just be a

  • ploy for sympathy as the ‘victim‘.
  • It can be revenge by getting other people to hate your adversary as well.
  • It can be a substitute for any real action–an excuse not to do anything.
  • It can be justification for your own mistakes and
  • avoidance of any responsibility for what happened, and
  • avoidance of the need to change personally.

Best to talk only to those that can offer some good information and advice while remaining detached emotionally from your issue. And then listen with an open mind.

Only clear eyed, detached processing of everything that happened and why without jumping to attaching blame is helpful. Then accept what can not be changed, create an action plan, and get to work immediately. As you see progress, the quicker your rage will die down.

Personally, I would have loved to had someone just hold me. But since I don’t have a partner, I grabbed a cat and snuggled with him. I sat with my piggies. I hugged my dogs. I looked up at the sky. I picked up and talked to the toads. I noticed some of the abundant sweetness that is on my farm. I remembered that I am loved, that I have meaning and purpose in this world, that this is a beautiful place, and I am choosing to be alive and present. 

At other times and places, I may have made love, watched funny movies, gone dancing or done something nice with friends just to discharge energy and regroup. But what is important is that you actively do something.

There is always something still left to enjoy and appreciate—even a memory to lift your spirit. 

  • Did I pass? I think so.
  • Will I do things differently in future? Absolutely!
  • Will I forget the lessons? No.
  • Can what I learned help someone else? Yes, I know so.

Getting to the Root of It

Anyone who has dealt with weeds knows that unless you can dig up the taproot, the weed comes back. And anyone who has gotten a splinter, knows that until you get it all out, the pain continues. Get only part of it out, and it becomes inflamed and perhaps infected. Thinking positive, ignoring it, or trying not to think about it only prolongs the problem and make it worse.

 And so it is with negative repeating patterns. Any time there is a negative pattern of any kind, you can bet that the root cause has not been addressed. The only way to change things and stop the same problem occurring over and over again is to find and clear the original issue, which will be the unhealed trauma and the negative belief or judgment about the experience.

If you are successful, you will probably not get any more such experiences, or at least, less of them. But should something similar happen again, it’s effect upon you will be greatly mitigated, and you will much more quickly, and with greater effectiveness, grace and ease handle it in a better way. While the annoying people in your life may not have changed, you will have. Therefore, your experience of it will be different. Because you think differently about things that used to bother you, you feel and respond differently.

Getting to the bottom of issues can be tricky and time consuming.

The original event and the interpretations about it may be unknown, long forgotten or repressed. And instead of just one traumatic event, it may be a layering of multiple events, each reinforcing the detrimental judgment that with a self-fulfilling prophecy that tends to 

    • either attract more experiences of like kind,
    • Or you just react and feel as if they are the same type of event even if they are not. In other words, you perceive and feel ____(slight, insult, prejudice, etc.) because you are sensitized, not necessarily because it was intended or actually happened. 

Healing requires not only taking corrective action in the moment, but learning from the experience. Through strong intention, you can decide that the very experience that upsets you will enhance your personal and professional growth, adding to your wisdom, your maturity, and your greater value to others as a leader, counselor, mentor and role model. I call this ‘finding the blessing’.

It is not enough to just neutralize the negative emotions.

Learn and grow through them as well. 

But then go further. 

Ask yourself, “has anything like this happened before?” 

If you get a ‘yes’, then your current problem is alerting you to the need to heal these earlier issues now, and perhaps other related additional ones that you don’t remember. If you do find and heal the root cause, the negative pattern will stop. And if that happens, then go and personally thank the person who is your current ‘pain in the butt’, the one that brought the issue to your attention and motivated you to address it.

Layering of memories

We are hard wired as part of our survival mechanism to put meaning to experience – to interpret it as good or bad, threatening or not. It is the interpretation, not the event itself, that determines the emotion that follows. Perhaps you had an upsetting experience and then made a judgment about it, an interpretation of what it meant to you that you forgot or repressed. Perhaps it was never verbalized, or didn’t register consciously because it happened at a young age, in the womb, or in a past life.

We now have scientific evidence from studies done with mice and children of Holocaust survivors that issues and emotions such as fear are being passed on the DNA to the generations that follow. This may be part of the survival mechanism for the species.

But not only can you pick up things up unconsciously from your ancestors in that way, any vividly imagined events especially those with high emotion can register on an unconscious level as if they actually happened to you even if they did not. This includes the stories you hear from your family, your culture, group, or witness in the media. It can include those experiences of book or movie characters that make a deep impression. All of these elements become part of the soup making up your beliefs and judgments, which go on to create or at least influence your future experiences and it’s impact upon you.

Regardless of where or when it originated, it and others like it are stored internally and can effect you until you process or reframe them. Reframing is changing your interpretation of the event.

For example, after a bad accident, you might continue to shake with fear thinking “I almost died”, but you could also interpret it as “if I’m still here, I must have a purpose,” or “I survived and I’m going to celebrate every day because you never know how long you have, or ”I was protected” or “help was there precisely when I needed it.”

As more and similar experiences occur over time, they are added to the previous ones making the event, the emotions and judgements around them more pronounced like a toe that keeps getting stepped on until it becomes very sensitized and you become over zealous in protecting it.  The one-time judgment about someone stepping on your toes then becomes a generalized global judgment, such as “everyone keeps stepping all over me”, or a sensitivity or issue as in “I have constantly be on the alert that no one steps on me again.” 

Triggers and other factors

But along with the experience that is logged into your memory bank, so are the various elements of that experience – the sounds, colors, location, season, date, and the various people and other things present. Each element is capable of triggering the entire memory and the emotion connected to it. Such elements are labeled triggers. But in addition to the elements present at the time of the experience, you can also react to other things not involved in the bad experience itself, but merely associated with the person, places or things that were involved.

For example, if you have a bad breakup with your boyfriend, you can understand why you to feel uncomfortable should you bump into him again. But now you may very well experience discomfort upon seeing one of his friends or relatives, or hearing one of the bands that both of you enjoyed, your favorite song, or being in a place that you used to go to together. Everything you associate with that boyfriend can awaken all the painful emotions and reasons for the break up. These are triggers too.

With some triggers, you clearly know where the emotion such as the fear comes from. But with other emotions, fears, tension or uneasiness, you may not remember the connection. These are more properly labeled as phobias. The fear seems irrational because the connection to the event that caused it has been lost. So it is not just the upsetting event that needs to be cleared, but also all of the triggers, many of which you may be unaware of until they are activated.

Multiple modalities help to find and process the issue.

1. Meditation

One way a person can get clues is through meditation. Just still your mind and let a question roll around in your mind. For example: 

  • “where does this ____ (emotion/ issue/ problem of ____) come from?”
  • Or, “what do I need to know or let go of to heal this issue fully and completely now?”
  • Or, “how can I look at this experience so that it doesn’t bother me nearly as much?”
  • Or, “why does this problem/issue of ___ keep happening over and over again?”

2. The Infinite Intelligence Process 

The Infinite Intelligence Process is a 3-prong modality that I developed. It can be used with meditation, formal hypnosis, self-hypnosis, or dowsing. I use it daily to clear my mind so that I have a restful sleep, quickly process the events of the day, relieve stress, chip away at issues, access internal resources, and, in general, speed up problem solving and make life go smoother. You can learn it through my book Accessing More – Tapping into the Eternal, Unlimited Self with the Infinite Intelligence Process.

You could utilize phrases like:

 “There is a part of my Being that knows where this ___ (emotion/ issue/ problem of ____) comes from and is bringing everything that I need to know into my awareness so that it can be healed/resolved now.” 

Or “There is a part of me that knows how to heal/resolve this in a way in which I am really pleased, and is doing so now.” 

Or after installing the Process Program that is activated with trigger words of process followed by go, you could say:

“From the perspective of my High Self, process and resolve everything to do with the problem of ____ in a way in which I am really pleased. Go.”

3. Hypnosis

Hypnosis has multiple methods of regressing to cause and then resolving the issue. In age regression, the information is brought up into awareness, verbalized in the hypnosis. The client is then guided in reframing or otherwise resolving the issue until it seems complete. My favorite hypnotic techniques are called ‘unconscious healing modalities’ because they operate below the level of conscious awareness and do not involve any verbalization by the client. The hypnotherapist creates depth of trance, establishes an ideomotor response, gets the agreement of the unconscious mind to locate and resolve the issue by itself. The instructions include to resolve the issue “in a way in which ___ (name) is ‘really pleased”.

4. Neural Linguistic Programming (NLP)

Time Line Therapy outlined in a book by the same title is a specific technique within NLP developed by Tad James and Wyatt Woodsmall. It is very helpful to quickly clear issues for which you don’t know the origin. It works below the level of conscious awareness. The instructions include “find the positive learning and release the upset.”

5. The Emotion Code

This method was developed by Dr. Bradley Nelson and works with muscle testing. But I use pendulum dowsing instead to locate the issue and determine the degree to which it is involved. Even if I use a magnet or running my fingers along the governing meridian as he suggests, I will also use dowsing to clear it further, and then check the degree to which I was successful.

6. The Emotional Freedom Technique 

Tap on the issue and everything around it including “Even though I may not know where this _____ (issue, emotion, problem of ___) comes from, I deeply love and accept myself.” 
There are other energy modalities as well to change beliefs. 

7. Dowsing

ight. No appointment and no wait time is necessary. It can find information that is not accessible either at all or not as easily found another way. It is extremely helpful in all problem solving, but especially helpful when the original cause is unknown, unconscious, forgotten, repressed, picked up in the womb or from the culture or tribe, or even stemming from past lives.

Locating & Clearing the Mental & Emotional Drivers of Disease

Chicken or Egg – Which came first?

Both physicians and alternative healing practitioners acknowledge the major role that stress has in breaking down the body’s ability to defend itself against disease. Some such as Dr. Deepak Chopra are particularly insistent that mental and emotional stress plays a part of every health challenge.

While illness causes stress whether through worry, financial expenditures, loss of income while ill, inability to do the things you used to do, time expenditures to figure out and address the problem, etc.,  stress causes or contributes to illness by robbing the body of precious resources such as energy and nutrients to deal with issues that it otherwise would have had for digestion, detoxification, growth, defense and repair.

Sudden emotional shock

Some stress such as the death of a loved one, the loss of one’s home, homeland, livelihood is so devastating that there is a clear connection to physical breakdown.

German oncologist, Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer, after exhaustive study of 20,000 cancer patients with different kinds of cancer, as well as studying patients with other diseases, found that people with the same diagnosis experienced a similar emotional shock. The results of his work became German New Medicine. His work is extremely interesting and can assist in the resolution of health conditions not addressed any other way. Slow wearing away of body resources

But while a sudden emotional shock can cause illness, frequently the stress is a slow, steady, cumulative effect of unresolved issues that wear away the body’s resources so that it can no longer muster the strength to protect itself. It may involve beliefs, attitudes, issues, or coping strategies for stress that cause a person to not do what he or she knows to be wise, or to do what he knows to be destructive or risky to health such as smoking.

Genetic factors

While some health issues or vulnerabilities are thought to be genetic, Bruce Lipton, PhD, biologist and author of The Biology of Belief, says that each gene has a dozen or so possible expressions, of which disease may only be one. Rather, Lipton says that it is the environment that determines how a gene will be expressed. And by environment he means how the cell or the individual interprets his environment. For example, is the environment considered dangerous or upsetting? Is it threatening in any way? 

Where do fears come from?

  • Some fears come from direct experience, or more precisely from the interpretation or judgment made about that experience. 
  • Some are promoted by the media
  • Some are adopted from or taught by your culture, family or group with which you closely identify.
  • Some are absorbed in the womb.

For example, if your mother was pregnant with you when your father was away at war, if your parents were young and worried about financially being able to support you, if they were fighting a lot, if your mother was raped or abandoned and going to have to raise you without the love and support of others, these emotions could have been absorbed in the womb. Hypnotic regression has shown this over and over again.

  • Some fears are inherited.

Scientists are now finding that emotions such as fears can be inherited. For example, Scientists at Emory University were able to demonstrate that fear could be deliberately created in a group of mice and then passed down to future generations of offspring. In this study, researchers repeatedly exposed a group of mice to the smell of acetophenone and then subjected them to an electric shock. They then tested two future generations of their offspring and found that they ‘inherited’ a fear response to the smell alone. 

This has implications for humans. As Emory Psychiatry Department Dr Brian Dias has said: “We have begun to explore an underappreciated influence on adult behaviour – ancestral experience before conception.

“From a translational perspective, our results allow us to appreciate how the experiences of a parent, before even conceiving offspring, markedly influence both structure and function in the nervous system of subsequent generations.

“Such a phenomenon may contribute to the etiology and potential intergenerational transmission of risk for neuropsychiatric disorders such as phobias, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.”

A new field called epigenetics involves studying the biological marking of the DNA as a result of personal experiences. This marking can be passed down through future generations.

In a recent article published by The Telegraph, Marcus Pembrey, professor and paediatric geneticist at University College London, said that the Emory study provided ‘compelling evidence’ for the biological transmission of memory. “It addresses constitutional fearfulness that is highly relevant to phobias, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorders, plus the controversial subject of transmission of the ‘memory’ of ancestral experience down the generations.”

study published in the Journal of Neuroscience used MRI to show that brain patterns inherited from both parents have an impact on anxiety, autism, addiction, dyslexia and other conditions, and that babies born to moms who are depressed during pregnancy are more likely to become depressed as adolescents. New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital discovered that genetic changes stemming from trauma suffered by Holocaust survivors can be passed on to their children.

Before emotion comes experience. And it is the interpretation or judgment about that experience that determines which emotion is felt. For example, the same ski slope can evoke fear in some or exhilaration in others.  It is the interpretations or judgments about the world (safe or scary), about the group (nurtured and protected or not), about the self (worthy or not, loved and wanted or not), that have everything to do with supporting health or disease.  This has been revealed in multiple past life hypnotic regressions.

Hypnotic regression has also found that physical conditions and weaknesses can be carried over from past lives. However, once the relevant traumatic event or events were processed and resolved hypnotically, long-time physical pain or ailments sometimes have melted away.

In Summary

Mental and emotional issues of both the patient and possibly his ancestors, of this lifetime and possibly others, need to be addressed in healing. While a person may know or suspect what stressors are implicated in his illness, a great deal of what caused or contributed to the problem, or is interfering with healing now, may well be unknown or unconscious.

Both hypnosis and dowsing excel in locating and clearing the stuck energies, the related negative beliefs or judgments, and the unhealed trauma (both yours and that of your ancestors). Chiropractor Dr. Bradley Nelson has also developed an excellent method of locating and clearing stuck negative emotions. He calls his system the Emotion Code, and has written a book by that title explaining the process.

Upset as Opportunity

Fuming over what you don’t like and the people you hold responsible for it may let off steam, but it burns up your precious life force energy and it doesn’t change anything! 

I suggest that you as quickly as possible accept that what happened, and is now history. Fuming doesn’t change history. The question is

What do you want to do about it?

How can you use it constructively?

Can you turn it into a blessing?

As I have said in previous posts, deliberately choose to look for a way to turn every experience especially the upsetting ones into a blessing. This will happen if you grow, if you learn something positive, if you take constructive action on things that previously you neglected or let slide, and if you finally turn your attention to dealing with wounds and issues long past but never resolved.

When you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, miracles of positive change can occur!

You can train yourself to use upset as a powerful

  • catalyst for healing yourself and
  • as motivation to create something better.

Here’s how.

Write the answers to the questions below. If you have trouble identifying them, brainstorm possible answers on paper and dowse them out. If you don’t know how to dowse, brainstorm anyway. Then close your eyes and ask yourself the question again. Or just write and write until you get to the core issue.

  • What’s happening that I don’t want?
  • What’s not happening that I do want?
  • What’s the key issue here?
  • What are my thoughts about what’s happening?
  • What are my emotions about it?
  • What do I want to happen instead?
  • What’s the essence of what I want?
  • What’s stopping me from getting it?
  • Is there another way to get the essence of what I want?
  • When were other times that something similar happened?
  • When was the earliest time that something similar to this happened?

Work your way through all of these questions, addressing them as you go.

Then ask some further questions:

  • How did I contribute in any way to what happened?
  • What positive steps can I make or what changes need to occur so this doesn’t happen again?
  • How can I improve my ____ (communication, follow-through, systems, etc.) so that my _____ (business, relationships) are actually better as a result of what happened?

Doing all of the above will move you forward.

Heal yourself rather than trying to change someone else!

Recently I spoke with someone who was upset because he had been unable to get someone else to change. He had tried talking to the person, but wasn’t getting anywhere. I suggested that he first identify and then address his own emotions and his thoughts around it before speaking to the person again so that they would not cause the person to tune him out.

In other words, if you are emotionally upset, you will make the other person defensive, and less likely to even consider changing their behavior and do what you want. You need to find a way to speak to the person from a neutral place, or better yet, from a place of common ground.

One way of starting that process is to detach your worth, your self-esteem from what someone else is doing. Each person acts out of who they are, not from who you are. And incidentally, people never change for you. They may moderate their behavior somewhat if the negative consequences are great enough. But they never change for you.

Eliminate the ‘shoulds and shouldn’ts’

Another initial step to reduce your upset is to eliminate the idea that people should or shouldn’t be any certain way or do anything according to your standards. Those self-righteous judgment calls are responsible for a great deal of stress. However, once you clarify the behavior you don’t want and the behavior you do want, you will be able to clearly communicate it to the other person.

As he labeled the other person as controlling, I suggested that he could turn this situation into a blessing if he could identify and then heal all similar experiences starting with the first time he was upset because of controlling behavior. In other words, this annoying current event might be viewed as positive by alerting him to a host of unresolved similar events festering in his unconscious not only causing him stress but setting up a negative repeating pattern.

My own experience

Years ago I was being constantly hit with the energy of jealousy. I could always tell when the conference brochures hit the mailboxes, because I could feel the red hot feverish flames blasting in my face, and it made me jittery and hard to focus. Once in giving a presentation of how and why to integrate Reiki with hypnosis, I could feel the arrows coming from 3 distinct locations in the room. So I asked the Reiki Masters present to stand, and guess what? They were sitting in the very same locations. These weren’t bad people, they just must have thought that they could or should have been the ones speaking on the topic I had chosen.

While I had previously worked diligently to heal my distress because of other people’s jealousy of me, it had not stopped the negative pattern until I dealt with the root cause.  As I thought about the first time this issue had occurred , I turned my attention to the lifelong problematic relationship with my sister that started in early childhood. Only after I healed that, did the negative pattern stop. I have not been affected since.

Whether any one is or has been jealous of me since, I don’t feel it anymore. I am not impacted. My energy is no longer drained.

Moral of the story:

Heal the root cause to stop the pattern.

Make positive changes going forward.

And if you do that, it will have been a blessing.

German New Medicine & the Mind-Body Connection

Recently, I was introduced to the work of Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer, M.D., who explored the connection between specific diseases and even the specific types of diseases ( lung versus breast versus prostate cancer) and the specific emotional traumas experienced by his patients. Even which side of the body was affected was found to be relevant to emotional issues. As he studied his patient’s brain scans and their histories, not only did he find patients with particular cancers has emotional issues in common with each other but that these issues were different from other cancers and other diseases. Further, he found markers on specific areas of the brain scans for each disease. This allowed him later to diagnose what was going on in the body from the CT scans alone. 

iu  Originally studying cancer patients, he went on to catalog the mind-body connection for a host of other diseases as well. He found that an unexpected emotional shock and the subjective internal conflict it caused in the patient determines which illness manifests and where.  You can find more on his work here and here. Another article briefly summarizing his work and from I took the photo is here.

A very interesting feature in the first above link is a listing of diseases and the emotional conflict it represents. See it here. Understand that there is no harm to do inner work (meditation/hypnosis/dowsing) to clear a possible non-beneficial emotion or conflict. The moment you change your mind, interpret something different about what happened, the emotional impact upon you changes. This is necessary to free up energy for your body to heal.

Below is a sample wording. But you might contact me for more assistance.

“If I have any iota or residue of _____ (conflict) on any level or dimension of my being, from any point in time, I command that it be resolved, transmuted, healed fully and completely in a way that I am able to rapidly be restored to abundant good health now. I command that any unresolved emotional trauma responsible or related in any way for the health condition of ___ be clarified, resolved, healed  and released. I release all blocks known and unknown to my full healing now.”

Quick Ways to Clear a Space of ‘Bad’ Energy

We may all may have experienced an uneasy ‘vibe’ or energetic residue that lingers in a space after strong unhappy or tragic events. Perhaps it stems from a death or divorce and what led up to it, long-standing illness or financial problems, strong dislikes or disputes in the house or neighborhood, an act of violence, arguments or sadness that seem to linger on in the very walls. While our conscious knowledge or personal memory of what took place there may be causing discomfort, it is sometimes an unconscious awareness of events that we feel. 

When the energy feels uncomfortable and stems from emotional residue, there are simple things you can do to shift it. Even if it is coming from another source and requires professional help beyond these simple fixes, doing these things may help. What you do depends upon the extent of oppressive energy that you feel. Start with something quick and simple, and work your way up until you get the results that you want depending upon the intensity of the emotional debris.

Space Clearing

Usually, you do this automatically when moving into a new space. Space clearing is always indicated then and at any subsequent time that either your own negative emotions or that of others have polluted the home or property. Historically, some of this was also done as part of spring and fall cleaning, and before major religious holidays. While everyone seems so busy today, it might be a good idea to bring this tradition back.

  • If the problem is inside the house, open the doors and windows, pull away any curtains or blinds, and let in the sun and fresh air. 
  • Clean — this can include inside closets, cabinets, and under the bed. Wash the windows and glass surfaces. Energy clings to things and dusting, polishing, washing and moving them around helps to clear stuck energies away. Clean with the intention of clearing away any anger, upset, grief, sadness in that space.
  • Clean up also applies to affected outside areas.
  • Smudge with sage, cedar or sweet grass
  • Do a light clearing exercise — imagine holy white or white golden light filling every corner of the space. If it is a house, imagine this light extending down into the basement, into the walls, up to the attic.
  • Use aromatherapy with pure sage, cedar, or rose oils
  • Place fresh flowers or eucalyptus in the area. Or if it is outside, plant colorful, blooming plants.
  • Make noise with drums, bells, gongs, bang pot lids together throughout the entire space. Open closet and cabinet doors, and bang noise into every corner of the house.
  • If it is outside, hang some wind chimes and ring them yourself if there is no wind.
  • Diffuse flower essences
  • Sprinkle holy water around and say some prayers
  • Burn epsom salts with a cap of 100% wood grain alcohol in a pie pan. Carry this burning pan around the room. I prefer this over smudging which stinks up the room with smoke which then must be cleared away before working inside. 
  • Burn purifying incense such as gum mastic, frankincense or myrrh, or protection incense
  • Burn a protection candle made with intention and the addition of special herbs
  • Perform or play holy chants. Prayers should focus on divine love, gratitude, connection to the divine.
  • Play or sing holy or inspirational music – perhaps set up a tape player to repeat continuously and saturate the walls of the house with a more harmonious frequency
  • Sing, dance and play happy music
  • Host a party or get together with happy, positive people to deliberately change the atmosphere and the mental/emotional associations with the space. Wholesome laughter is extremely helpful.
  • Draw Reiki symbols in the air and projecting throughout all walls and corners of each room. I use Cho Ku Ray and Harth.
  • Use specific energy clearing pendulums. These include Spellbreaker, Mace, Releaser, Golden Hue, Isis. Contact me for more information.
  • Get rid of clutter – clutter creates stuck energy
  • Get rid of objects that strongly remind you of painful events
  • Rearrange or change the furniture or ornaments so it looks different and you relate differently to the space
  • Paint the walls of the effected area a different color

Rearrange the Furniture to Rearrange Your Life

There is great value in moving things around.

I started early. My family moved next to the Seymours when I was three and Mrs. Seymour welcomed me onto her enclosed front porch to play with one or more of her four children. But what I found most fun was not the toys but rearranging the furniture and everything else there. I did this almost every day for several years. God rest her most tolerant soul.

What was I doing?

Rearranging the furniture is about seeing other options or possibilities, trying out new solutions, new relationships between you and the environment. It is not necessarily about making anything prettier, more functional, although it may do that. Beyond the benefits of feng shui or getting rid of clutter, simply moving the furniture and decorations makes you relate differently to the things in your space. And this possibly may support your desire to be different, to change, grow or relate differently to the larger world.

It calls upon and develops your spatial perception, which is the ability to be aware of your relationships with the environment around you and with yourself,  “to situate yourself, move around, orient yourself, make multiple decisions, analyze situations and representations of our surroundings and the relationship our body has with it.” CogniFit)

Changing things around helps to make (or when desiring to make) other changes.

For example, when working with smokers to break their habit, I advise that they change all their routines associated with the unwanted behavior because those routines act as a trigger. So, I suggest that they sit in a different chair than the one in which they used to smoke, eat and take their work breaks away from their smoking haunts, drive a different way to and from work, etc.

“You associate your outer, familiar world with who you think you are, by remembering yourself in this dimension, this particular time and space.” Your routines and all your sensory reminders, which include your environment, keep you plugged into your old self that is tied to the conditions that you want to change. He says “we remain plugged into this past self by following a highly routine, unconscious set of automatic behaviors. For example, you probably wake up on the same side of the bed, slip into your robe the same way as always, look into the mirror to remember who you are, and shower following an automatic routine. Then you groom yourself to look like everyone expects you to look, and brush your teeth in your usual memorized fashion. You drink coffee out of your favorite mug,” etc.

However, what he doesn’t mention is that should you change where the bed is located, you automatically have to get up differently. Move your favorite chair, and you are now viewing the room from a different perspective. You are changing the flow of energy not just in your space, but in your life.

Change something to change something else.

When ending a relationship, I found getting a hair cut was an appropriate symbolic act to let go of the old. Getting new clothes, a new look was part of the new me, the me separate from being identified as part of a couple, that was going to venture out again. Likewise, moving, going someplace new, traveling to a different culture where people have their own ways of relating to life, helps you to reevaluate your own values, priorities, lifestyle, etc. It is helpful as a separation from the old way of life and what you hope to be the new one. Then there is an old Jewish folk saying:  “Change your location, change your luck.”

But for right now, for those unable or unwilling to move or travel in order to get a fresh perspective, a new take on their life, the immediate, easy solution is just to rearrange the furniture.

Dowsing on Health

Why Dowse on Health?

Dowsing is a powerful tool for problem solving of all kinds. In making your own charts and checklists, it uses your knowledge, training, and analytical mind to brainstorm possible sources of a problem, and to list possible solutions. Then as you enter an alpha state of consciousness, you can tap into your inner guidance system and the greater consciousness system as Physicist Tom Campbell calls it, to zero in on those items most likely to yield the greatest results.

Use dowsing to

  • outline a comprehensive health care program and
  • set priorities of what to do or not do to stay healthy or to heal if sick

Dowsing in this way makes sense and can save a heap of time.

Healing from any condition is almost never as simple as take this pill, undergo this surgery. Ill health usually comes from years of poor diet and exercise, bad habits or lifestyle, toxicity and stress. It may also stem from years of unresolved issues, negative beliefs and judgments, emotions and conflicts. No physician in the world can remedy all of the factors involved. No matter how good or how necessary their expertise, physicians specialize in one narrow band of the problem. Committing yourself to address the larger and other issues is your responsibility.

Illness represents an imbalance and severe energy drain taking place usually on multiple levels that prevents the body from doing what it already knows how to do. Medicine focuses on only one part of the equation. It ignores vital other areas that effect health: energy, stress, nutrition, toxicity, relationships, meaning and purpose in life, joy and fulfillment, rest and recreation, and the spiritual dimension. In my opinion, the best approach to healing is to integrate a multi prong approach that includes traditional medical care with attention to these other areas as well.

Dowsing is a profound help in working with the healer within, getting more energy in, locating and plugging energy drains, brainstorming strategies that support health overall, and restoring balance to one’s life.

How Not to Let Non-Beneficial Energies Stick

Energetic Self Defense:

A Common Sense Approach

Non-beneficial, uncomfortable energies are around us in the sea of consciousness just like beneficial, comfortable ones all the time. The point is not to let them stick to you. Non-beneficial energies cannot stick if your energy field is strong and healthy and if you have no receptor sites. Your energy field is affected by your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual state.

  •  Non-beneficial energies cannot stick if you are in a good physical state.

Therefore, take care of your health, and get adequate nutrition, sleep, etc. Also, do something that forces you to breathe deeply and preferably combine it with connecting with others. Exercise strengthens your energy field, dumps a great deal of stress, and oxygenates your brain so that you can think better. But rather than work out in isolation on machines, sign up for a dance class, chorus, drumming circle, hiking group where you will socialize at the same time and get additional benefits.  Even hard, physical work that gives you a sense of accomplishment is helpful, but is even better if you do it with a friend.

  •  Non-beneficial energies cannot stick if you are in good mental and emotional state.

This means that in order to keep your energy clear, it is important to

  1. Deal adequately with everyday stress.
  2. Deal also with your old hurts, anger, resentment, trauma, drama, etc. 
  3. Stay connected to others.
  4. Have fun.

All of us need to learn basic stress management techniques to dump stuck energies. In today’s highly stressed world, it is easy to become overwhelmed. There are a great many techniques, but the Emotional Freedom Technique is a good place to start because it is simple to learn, highly adaptable to anything, and powerful. There are many videos online making it easy to learn this process. I teach this to everyone. Another good technique and another that I teach all my clients is the Infinite Intelligence Process that I wrote about in my book Accessing More.

Your mental and emotional issues, your unhealed wounds, fears, prejudices, limiting beliefs and addictions act as velcro that attracts similar, compatible energies. This makes your own situation worse. Like attracts like. But each time you heal some of your own issues, you remove the receptor site and prevent these non-beneficial energies and the entities that like them from sticking to you.

  •  Non-beneficial energies cannot stick if you are happy, surrounded by people you love, and having fun.

One major contributor to severe depression and even suicide is isolation. Wholesome laughter, get togethers with people you love and care about and who care about you is vital to keep your health and energy field strong.

For example, I notice a real difference in how I feel when I am around my son and grandchildren. Giving piggy back rides and engaging in vigorous games just doesn’t hurt my body the same way as it would it I were doing hard, physical work or lifting heavy things at home. And I am much more resilient to intrusive energies.

  • Laugh.

When I was going through a divorce, I would deliberately stop in the offices of other people in my building and ask them to tell me a joke. I was not denying what was going on in my life or my upset about it. Rather, I realized that sometimes things are so bad that all you can do is laugh. I knew that the laughter would help to break up all the congested feelings of sadness, anger, grief, overwhelm, depression, etc. Then as  I retold the joke quickly to several other people, I laughed again. I developed a significant repertoire. Despite the severe stress from my personal situation, and despite the frustrations of my work associates, the jokes helped to restore balance for us all. It made a positive shift in the energy, both in me and the workplace.

  •  Non-beneficial energies cannot stick if you are in a high vibrational or good spiritual state.

By spiritual, I mean that you feel deeply connected to something beyond yourself. Perhaps you feel a real sense of belonging and service to your family, the larger community, to humanity as a whole. You may feel deeply rooted to the earth, to nature, to some over arching intelligence behind the cosmos. This has nothing to do with specific religious beliefs, but with having a strong connection to or relationship with something More. This sense of belonging to something beyond yourself provides you some immunity against intrusive, uncomfortable energies.

If you consider that as consciousness you are connected to the Source of consciousness, that connection provides a link to greater resources of knowledge, wisdom and power you can harness to meet any challenge. I consider that each person is a powerful, spiritual being somehow intrinsically connected to the greater whole. Instead of being a powerless victim without influence, I consider that what makes you — you –that special spark that is your vibratory signature–was created by design, by intention, on purpose.

When you feel connected to something More, and also when you are aligned with a sense of purpose and feel you are making a meaningful contribution, this contributes to spiritual strength as well.

You are psychically linked to others that love you, believe in you, and are there to help you. Whether you are physically with your friends or family members or alone when you are feeling low, just by thinking of your loved ones, by thinking of your love for them and their love for you, you instantly are enveloped in a protected bubble.

You do not have to be religious to gain spiritual strength.

You can put out a mental call to and connect with that something More in the universe for help. You can also deliberately imagine your loved ones, guardian angels, ancestors watching your back. Imagine taking them with you when you are going into a tough situation, like having your own personal army standing alongside and behind you when faced with the school yard bully.

If you have trouble going to sleep, put your angels or ancestors at the head and foot of the bed to watch over you throughout the night and only awaken you if it is important to do so.

 Gratitude helps to strengthen your energy field.

When you think of all the things for which you are grateful, you realize that you do have resources to bring to any challenge. The old rituals of praying before bed and before meals with thanksgiving are energetically protective.

 Forgiveness helps too.

When you hold onto negative emotions, you bind those you hold responsible to you. Why drag them around? This prolongs your suffering and weakens your energy field making you more susceptible to other non-beneficial energies. Your anger, hurt, resentment or disapproval does not change what happened, and cannot resolve it. Constructive action is the only thing that can rectify anything.

The reason to forgive is simply because you do not want to hurt anymore, and you realize that you need to free your vital energy to be able to create a better future for yourself.

  • Turn those that offended you over to their destiny under God.
  • Ask for forgiveness from those you have harmed whether knowingly or unknowingly–even if that harm was only in the perception of those other people.
  • Pray to heal any karma between you.
  • Practice Ho ‘oponopono. This exercise as popularized by Dr. Hew Len and Joe Vitale in their book, Zero Limits, is very helpful.

Forgive yourself.

If you don’t find a way to forgive yourself, your unconscious mind will find a way to sabotage or punish yourself, which you don’t want to happen. Learn what you can from your experiences. Learn what you need to say or do, or not say or do next time. Mentally rehearse handling the situation in a better way at least 5 times. Perhaps think of how someone else might have handled it better, and learn from them.

Perhaps make a symbolic act of contrition as a way of saying you are sorry. For example, you can light a candle in church, do some act of charity or kindness for someone else.

Do not take on or identify with the emotional issues or problems of others.

This is especially important if you are sensitive, empathetic and feel other people’s emotions. Assist others as appropriate, but do not assume their burdens and pain. Keep one foot always planted in a world without such problems so that you know that things can be different. Vividly imagine a better world, and then ask yourself if there is something you can do to move in that direction. If you identify with problems, whether your own or that of others, it will drain your energy and ability to be effective in changing it.

Are these distressing emotions and thoughts really yours?

They may not be. You may be just telepathically picking up those belonging to someone else, or those left over in the environment by others. Are these thoughts true? Is your mother, your kid brother, that old school teacher still in your head and telling you it’ll never work, that you’re no good at, etc.? Can you regain your composure by challenging discordant thoughts? Do they reflect something you saw in the media, a movie, or read in a novel? Is the nightly news getting you down because you do not have enough good news to balance it?

Are you picking unsettling emotions up on the psychic airways? If they are not yours, say a prayer for the owner of those feelings even if you are not sure where they came from. Think of each person as really a powerful, spiritual being, guided and protected as well as you are. Imagine the person/s involved as  healthy, happy, confident.

But if the feelings are yours, or you resonate with them, then do something to resolve or heal them. Again, the Emotional Freedom Technique or the Infinite Intelligence Process that I teach can help.

Do not accept emotional abuse.

Let someone’s verbal bombardment pass right on by like the wind. You would not be upset if a lion in the zoo roared at you. The lion is just being itself. So is your boss, your ex, your ____.

While it is good to be aware of what is going on in the world and how people feel about it or about you, their feelings, their judgments are their perceptions, their opinions, their reality.  However, information is useful. It is feedback. Information informs you of action that might be appropriate, needed and timely. It may inform you on how you might be helpful or better. It may make you aware that you need to communicate more clearly, set boundaries, adjust your own behavior. It may make you aware of what issues are resonating within yourself that might need to be healed.

Ask yourself

  • How can this be turned into a blessing?
  • Is it necessary or appropriate for me to take any action? What?
  • What can I learn from this?

Non-beneficial energies that do seem to stick whether from people or annoying entities that are around always have something to teach you. If you pay attention and take action, they can actually bless you.  There is a saying

“Man made it for evil, but God meant it for good.”

Remember to have an attitude that any energies that bother you are a temporary annoyance. My belief is that you are a powerful, spiritual being–a chip off the Old Block, which is the ultimate Source of all that is that people call God. Therefore, you have a right to dominion within your own energy field, your own home and environment, and a right to command the benevolent forces of the heavens to come to your aid and assist you.

Finding BALANCE

Remember to keep a healthy energy field starts with good basic care of yourself with adequate sleep, and nutrition. Then it means dealing with stress and old issues, by being around loving, supportive people, having fun, laughing, singing and dancing, doing anything that brings a smile to your face, and gives you a sense of meaning and purpose in life. Breathing deeply will instantly release fear, raise your vibration and strengthen your energy field. And happy or sacred music will assist you to stay in a good place and permeate the walls of wherever you play it.

Picking Up Vibes

Sensing Energy

You walk into a building, a room, or down a street, and for some reason, start feeling peaceful, happy, warm, safe. Or, sometimes you might start getting agitated, scared, creeped out, or simply uncomfortable. There may not appear to be any rational reason for it, but you can’t deny that you are sensing or reacting to something. What?

I remember visiting the home of Philosopher, Jidda Krishnamurti (long since dead) in Ojai, California and I COULD NOT HELP SMILING. While I respected this sage, I certainly was not a follower. Yet, the happy energy in that space was palpable, and forcibly changed my usual overly serious continence to happy as long as I stayed in his house and immediate grounds.

I have walked into some empty churches, and immediately felt a sense of peace. And while the architecture and sheer beauty of the place may have been lovely in all of them, the peace appeared to be unrelated to aesthetics. Some of the most beautiful left me empty, and some of the plainest churches felt the best. One place where I particularly and consistently felt at ease was at the Lake Shrine of the Self Realization Fellowship in Pacific Palisades, California. It is a small, simple place in a beautiful garden with a small lake, that was dedicated by Yogi Paramahansa Yogananda (also long deceased). His followers have regularly practiced meditation there over the years.

Just what is the cause of our reactions?

  • Are we sensing energy vortexes?

Some vortexes are especially palpable as are those in Sedona. Other beneficial yet invisible earth energies and ley lines were harnessed in the placement of the world’s oldest cathedrals. Dowsers are skilled in locating them.

  • Are we picking up on chi?

Chi is the movable positive or negative life force which plays an essential role in the Chinese study of feng shui? This can take into consideration the lay of the land and a building’s placement on it, the shape of spaces and angles inside, colors, the function of the rooms and furniture placement, and much more. Feng shui has been shown to effect energy and mood.

  • Are we sensing the emotions, frame of mind, and possibly even the intentions of the current or even long past inhabitants?

For example, was I feeling the left-over residues of years of peaceful meditation, or the personality imprint of saints such as Krishnamurti or Yogananda, and of good people who had peace in their hearts who had spent a lot of time at those locations? I think so.

  • Are we feeling the residue of activities and events that occurred there?

Yes, if they are powerful enough even for a single event as in an accident, murder, battle, or if repeated over time if less in intensity in daily life.

  • Are we feeling the good will and harmony or the irritation and dislike within a household or company?

Don’t we have the expression that ‘you could cut the atmosphere with a knife’ ?

  • Are we even picking up on the emotions and thoughts of others that are directed at us?

Energy directed at us can be perceived whether the sender is physically present with us or not. For example, am I feeling good because someone who loves me is thinking of me even though miles away? Conversely, if I am uncomfortable, is it because someone is angry with me and focusing on me at that moment? Am I picking up on their disapproval, rejection, negative judgment?

The reverse of things that make us feel good can also saturate a place and be sensed as well.

This can include bad feng shui, geopathic zones, the residue of traumatic, unhappy, stressful events, or the imprint of upset, angry, fearful or depressed people.  I, personally, am very uncomfortable in or around hospitals, prisons, certain neighborhoods (whether or not obvious from the buildings), the World Trade Center, or anywhere near old battlefields, factory farms or animal feedlots.

Years ago, I was awoken in the middle of the night while camping in New Jersey by a British soldier and American Indian in hand to hand combat outside my motorhome. Dream? No. Ghosts? Again, I think not. It seemed more like a frozen piece of time being replayed like a broken record because of the emotional intensity in that spot.

Another night, I was compelled to follow the energy I felt in my parent’s house some time after my father’s death. Dowsing my way, much as one might follow breadcrumbs from one end of the house to the other, it lead me down to the basement to my father’s ham radio room where he spent countless, happy hours talking to people all over the world. Was this my father’s ghost? No, I felt sure that wasn’t it. It felt like the leftover residue of his concentrated energy over the years. That room and the activities there played a big part in his life.

Referring to my father, there was an intense holy and loving presence in the house after he died that lasted for some months. It extended even into the yard. Was this energy my father that was continuing to love us? Maybe. Was it the love of our deceased ancestors to comfort us? Maybe. But it felt like much, much more than either of those possibilities. Was it the spiritual energy that my father attracted by his goodness and religious devotion? It felt like the latter.

As I think about the uncomfortable energies that I have encountered over the years, especially the ones that seem to be in my own space or follow me around, I am convinced that a great deal of it falls within my own lap.

The problem is not in that I perceive uncomfortable energies, but that such non-beneficial energies sometimes seems to stick and are difficult to shake because of me being in a weakened state, whether physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually.

This weakened state might come from both current issues as well as past issues that I have not yet resolved. The cumulative effect makes it harder to gain perspective, and deal with those issues. It also makes me vulnerable to other stressors as well as to outside energies that drain my energy further and feed off and aggravate the very non-beneficial thoughts and emotions I am trying to heal.

Such weakening agents include:

  • Fatigue, exhaustion, lack of sufficient sleep and pushing beyond my limits.
  • Other health issues including illness, toxicity, inflammation, lowered immunity, diet.
  • Overwhelm, worry and stress in my personal life. Concern for loved ones.
  • Worry, grief, fear, anger, depression or upset about the suffering, cruelty, corruption, ignorance, injustice, and evil that I perceive or hear about in local, national, world conditions and events.
  • My own unhealed emotional wounds, limiting beliefs and judgments.

Like attracts like.

For example, if I am sensitive to the jealousy/anger of others, it may be because I have not healed either my own jealousy or anger, or the pain/upset from previous experiences with jealous/angry people.

I have found that anything that depresses my spirit or challenges my health makes me vulnerable to being impacted by bad vibes.  But the reverse is also true.

Anything that lifts my spirits and enhances my health can strengthen my energy field and make me more resilient to non-beneficial energies, stress, and able to deal, in general, with problems or challenges of any kind.

Energy Enhancers

This includes all the usual, common sense things like quality nutrition, sleep, detoxification, gratitude, forgiveness, love, joy, happy music and dance, loving friends and family nearby, a supportive network and community, recreation, nature, sunshine, wholesome laughter, exercise, and more.

Even if bad vibes are directed at me personally as when someone is jealous, angry or resentful or if they reject, judge or disapprove of me, if I exercise healthy diet and lifestyle habits, if I work to resolve my own personal issues, and if I challenge my own limiting beliefs and judgments, and if I have supportive, loving people around me, it makes a substantial, positive difference in being able to maintain a healthy boundaries,  equilibrium, and resiliency. Then I am less impacted by whatever disharmony, bad vibes or energy pollution is out there from any source.
