The Tangled Web of Choices that Create Our Reality

Introduction

So often we ascribe simplistic reasons to why things happen. Maybe we just blame someone else without considering that we might have played a role. Perhaps we think we’re a victim of circumstances or Mercury Retrograde. Maybe we look for some reason within our consciousness that attracted the problem. But what if ‘the cause’ was not one thing, not created or attracted by one person, but was rather a web of choices, decisions, actions to which both we and others all contributed? And what if (at least on occasion) the intention was not to punish, not to stress us out, but to teach us something?

In an earlier article, Why Shit Happens (or doesn’t) , I list the 34 other Laws of Mind (taken from Your Unlimited Potential) that in addition to the Law of Attraction create our reality. To this list, Tom Campbell in the quote below adds that our reality can be created by the larger consciousness system as a learning opportunity for ourself or others.

If a particular occurrence is determined to be an effective learning opportunity for someone or everyone, the probability of it happening is increased. The system is designed to automatically deliver timely custom-fit individual learning opportunities — the presentation of such opportunities to individuals or groups is part of the feedback one receives relative to the choices one makes. Because the point of the system is to overcome fear (about you – high entropy) and replace it with love (about others – low entropy), if you have fear, the feedback system will manifest that fear in PMR [physical reality] to force you to deal with it (learn) or suffer the consequences.”

In this article I hope to illustrate and number the multiple choices/decisions (some with  immediate and some with long-term consequences) that we individually make that are intertwined with the choices/decisions that others make. All are part of the overall Law of Cause and Effect. All contribute to our experience. The accumulation of actions and choices of everyone involved, even those seemingly miniscule or innocuous, add up over time, building in consequences. Here is a real life example.

The Case of the Missing Luggage

In June of 2016, I was to fly to California to teach at the West Coast Dowsers Conference being held in Santa Cruz. There I was also to be a vendor and sell my many books and other products. Such trip was going to involve three flight changes. As my books were very heavy and would have cost a lot to ship cross country, and as I had previously had the experience of shipped books not arriving at a conference in time, I made a decision to cram as many as I could into my carry on and checked baggage. (#1)   Each piece of luggage was at the ultimate weight limit.

Before packing, I evaluated various luggage options. I had the choice between a more roomy duffle bag that I would have to hand carry but which could hold more, or a smaller piece with wheels. I chose the duffle bag. (#2) Had I been better with planning, I might have evaluated the consequences of this way in advance and possibly bought a bigger wheeled option. (#3)

I called ahead and told the airport that I needed transportation from the long-term parking area. They assured me that they would be able to help me. However, I had not allowed enough time to to get ready to leave the house. (#4) And because I now had a heavy duffle bag with my books, I waited at the car (#5) instead of attempting to haul both my suitcase and the duffle bag up the hill. The shuttle never came (#6), nor was the dispatcher answering the phone at that early hour. (#7) So I had to walk, but the delay meant that I was just 3 minutes past the cut-off time for check-in. Even though the flight was still 30 minutes off, they refused to let me board, and put me on another flight. (#8)

Next, I was asked if I wanted to check my carry-on bag for an extra expense, but I declined. (#9) A little voice in my head asked “are you sure?” I declined again. (#10)  I again heard that voice repeat the question, and I still did not change my decision. (#11)

At security, I took out my computer, jewelry, cosmetics out of my computer bag to be screened, but because of the rush to get to the gate, I threw everything into my roomier duffle bag, thinking that I would have time to reorganize everything neatly at the gate. (#12)

However, as soon as I got to the gate and before I could reorganize my valuables, I had to quickly hand over my carry on duffle bag to an airline attendent at the first leg of the trip. (#13) I was able to personally retrieve it o.k. when we landed. But now I had to really struggle to physically carry my book bag throughout a very big terminal. (#14)

Because of the fight changes that made a super tight window to make next connection, I had to literally run to make my next flight. This was extremely difficult, exhausting, but some young man helped carry things part way or I would not have made the connection at all. (#15)

When I got to the gate, the airline attendant would not let me board with my duffle bag that still had my computer, jewelry and cosmetics in it. (#16) She rapidly took it from me and checked it in telling me that I would retrieve it at the next stop. However, she was rushed (#17) with many other people trying to board, and unknown to me, she put the wrong final destination on my bag. (#18)

I arrived at the 3rd airport, but was told that my luggage were already being sent to my final destination. But when I finally arrived in California, my suitcase was there, but not my duffle bag. I spent a couple of hours checking to see if it was late getting off the plane, (#19) and then filed out forms for lost luggage. (#20) The airline after several calls had no record of my duffle bag (#21) and told me I would just have to keep checking back with them. Then I had to yet wait a further hour because my flight changes had caused an issue with the previously scheduled shuttle service. (#22)

I finally got to the conference. However, the books that I was hoping to sell to pay for this trip were not there so I made no sales. (#24) I spent the next three days anxiously calling the airline for information as to where it was. (# 25)

I was blessed to have a conference attendee drive me into town to buy new toiletries, hair curler, etc. that had been in the duffle bag. (#26). But this was an additional expense. (#27) Another attendee lent me a jacket (#28) because my only warm wrap for the 50 degree weather was also in the duffle bag. (#29)

I was very stressed out (#30) not just about the books and decrease in sales that their loss and even time delay represented (#31), and the potential loss of my good jewelry, but most of all because of my computer. Since I had not been in the habit of backing up my files (#32), losing my computer back would mean that I would lose all of my documents including book manuscripts. (#33)

Eventually, the duffle bag showed up at an airport in Osaka, Japan. One day before the conference was over, the duffle bag was returned with everything intact — thanks to lots of prayers from many people (#34) and the honesty of those involved on two continents and 4 airports (#35).

Moral of the Story

This was a lesson that multiple actions, choices and decisions by both me and others led to both creating, alleviating, and solving this problem. Had I been regularly backing up my computer, had I made a different luggage choice, had I listened to the small voice within me to check the additional bag, had I allowed more time to get to the airport, had I immediately walked to the terminal instead of waiting for the shuttle, had I put my valuables back into the computer bag, everything would have been different. So the screw up was as much my fault as that of the airlines. But it was also a lesson that there are good people everywhere who help just because that’s who they are, and honest airline luggage handlers in 4 airports and two continents who returned everything in good shape.

Dowsing for Mind-Body Healing

When a person is ill, they typically go to a doctor for a diagnosis. But the diagnosis, even if accurate, is not the root cause of the problem. The disease may only manifest after years of the body being abused, of other things being unbalanced or neglected, of the mind or body being overworked, overwhelmed, stressed out, of the spirit disconnected from joy, purpose, fulfillment or loving relationships. The cause may stem from years of unresolved upsets and issues, detrimental beliefs, habits or lifestyle.

In this way, disease is an opportunist taking advantage of some weak spot. And while a person may be good about taking good care of himself in certain ways, he may ignore or even abuse himself in others. For example, he may eat right or exercise but still smoke. It is in the neglected or abused area where the body and health will break down. At the time, he may think he is invincible, that his body will always bounce back, or that for any reason that he has to push himself beyond sensible limits. He may think that his ego, sense of self image, job or family responsibilities or finances depend upon it. He may feel that life is about having fun but then interpret ‘fun’ in some self-destructive way. He may think that he has plenty of time to get serious about his health in some far distant tomorrow. Then tomorrow comes and the piper wants to be paid.

Think of it this way: a house may be burglarized because it was easy— by all appearances, no one was home, the door was unlocked, or a window was left open. And while there was an alarm system, it may not have been turned on. Closing the window now does not bring back what was stolen, but it is still important to do so anyway because it can stop another burglary.

So if you are dealing with a poor health condition, what window of opportunity did you leave open that made it possible? What important nutritional supplements did you have in the house but were not taking? What stress management tools do you know that you were not practicing? What common sense principles or practices or habits that you already know about were you ignoring?

Even when the health problem is obvious as with a broken bone from an accident, that accident may have only occurred because the person was not centered, paying attention or distracted, perhaps because of worries, or lack of sleep. Maybe he was partying late, burning the candles at both ends, or upset about something.

In short, health can never be separated from the other aspects of a person’s life. And healing always needs to consider the bigger picture, not only regarding good basic self care but also mental, emotional and spiritual issues as well.

Dowsing can help locate what is out of balance, what habit, diet or lifestyle changes need to be made. It can pinpoint what mental and emotional issues need to be addressed, and where, when and with whom they arose. Dowsing can set up a priority list of where to start, and which actions/modalities will have the most beneficial effect. It can through intention remove blocks to healing including detrimental beliefs and judgments. It can indicate the degree of progress in resolving problems and stuck energies.

In short, dowsing has phenomenal potential in identifying underlying issues and tracking their resolution. It uncovers what is hidden and infinitely speeds up the process leading to faster healing time.

Mental Entrapment

Your Belief System as a Cage

Throughout my adulthood, I have pondered the power of a group to entrap the minds of those who belong by allowing someone else–a living leader or a dead one or even a group as a whole–to do their thinking and decision making  for them, and to tell them how to live their lives and what action to take on anything. This applies not just to cults, but to religions, politics, philosophical ideologies of all stripes, social media and identity politics (race, gender, sexual identification and orientation, vegan or not, victim of ___, 12 step member, etc).

Group think goes beyond what to believe and how to act. The group can become your very identity and your ‘family’. Consequently, it becomes very threatening if you start to have any questions or doubts. A warning sign of group think is that you are not only told what to believe but honest questions or debate are ridiculed, disallowed or even punished.
A belief by definition is something that is not or cannot be proven, but which is just accepted on faith. It is one thing to accept unimportant things on faith from what you consider a good source until such time as you find a better source. But it is another thing to accept important things on faith without extensive research and thought, and it is even worse to defend such unexamined beliefs by attacking those that do not agree with you.
Another warning sign of group think is that you are told who is’ good’ and who is ‘bad’, who to love and follow, and who to hate or censor, who and what to support, and who and what to protest or punish. Such group is oppressive to personal growth and evolution even if it claims to be spiritual or take the moral high ground. The leaders that endorse group think are into ego, control and manipulation. You might consider the teachings of any such group as propaganda or mind-control. Especially is this true if fear is used to discipline and control members.
It can be comforting to feel certain about things, and for someone else tell you what to do instead of making the hard decisions yourself. It is also very seductive to feel that you are on the ‘right’ side, that you are ‘enlightened’, ‘progressive’, ‘spiritual’ or in any way morally superior to those that have different beliefs or group affiliation. Your ego can get caught in a trap that mistakes your beliefs or group affiliation for your core identity. At that point, it becomes progressively harder to examine and move past those beliefs or to find your core self.

The truth of who you are is separate and apart from your beliefs and the group that shares them!

I was reading an article about a particular religious group. I am not interested in debating the merits of this group or the veracity of this critic, so I have deleted it’s name. But do feel that the comments of this person could well apply to ANY GROUP. Consider his observations when you think about the increasing polarization in our society.
“The problem is that the longer you’re in something …. you start to form your identity around your belief system. Your ego can keep you from undoing this to the point wherein you can’t divorce yourself even from something that is bad for you. It even becomes near impossible to think clearly enough to ask yourself “Am I still a truth seeker, or am I now just blinded by my own beliefs to the point wherein I can’t be objective?” Which is it for you?

The hardest thing for most people is to question …[their group] once they’ve committed to it, especially after a number of years. You’ve got too much invested — friendships, habits, ways of thinking, belief systems and even part of your personal lexicon. Your identity becomes attached to these ideas that are adopted as your own. Thus, you can be a part of a big lie and self deception because your ego just won’t let go. You’re too close to the problem to recognize it. You become entirely defensive. You defend the lies, the plagiarisms, the accusations, the contradictions and the injustices of … [_____] as if they are all an attack on you personally. In the long run this is bad for you because you are being controlled by two forces: 1. the … [_____] organization and 2. your own set of beliefs.
To look at the truth about … [____], including the good and the bad, you have to check your ego at the door. This is way too much for many people to do. But if you’re brave and open-minded and are really a truth seeker, you’ll do it for your own good and the good of others. If not, you’ll continue to be in denial and to live a lie. It’s your own choice.”
================
While everyone needs teachers and guidance, in the final analysis, each of us has take personal responsibility and go inside to that still, small voice for the big issues. It is only there that we will find the answers for ourselves.

Quick Ways to Clear a Space of ‘Bad’ Energy

We may all may have experienced an uneasy ‘vibe’ or energetic residue that lingers in a space after strong unhappy or tragic events. Perhaps it stems from a death or divorce and what led up to it, long-standing illness or financial problems, strong dislikes or disputes in the house or neighborhood, an act of violence, arguments or sadness that seem to linger on in the very walls. While our conscious knowledge or personal memory of what took place there may be causing discomfort, it is sometimes an unconscious awareness of events that we feel.

When the energy feels uncomfortable and stems from emotional residue, there are simple things you can do to shift it. Even if it is coming from another source and requires professional help beyond these simple fixes, doing these things may help. What you do depends upon the extent of oppressive energy that you feel. Start with something quick and simple, and work your way up until you get the results that you want depending upon the intensity of the emotional debris.

Space Clearing

Usually, you do this automatically when moving into a new space. Space clearing is always indicated then and at any subsequent time that either your own negative emotions or that of others have polluted the home or property. Historically, some of this was also done as part of spring and fall cleaning, and before major religious holidays. While everyone seems so busy today, it might be a good idea to bring this tradition back.

  • If the problem is inside the house, open the doors and windows, pull away any curtains or blinds, and let in the sun and fresh air.
  • Clean — this can include inside closets, cabinets, and under the bed. Wash the windows and glass surfaces. Energy clings to things and dusting, polishing, washing and moving them around helps to clear stuck energies away. Clean with the intention of clearing away any anger, upset, grief, sadness in that space.
  • Clean up also applies to affected outside areas.
  • Smudge with sage, cedar or sweet grass
  • Do a light clearing exercise — imagine holy white or white golden light filling every corner of the space. If it is a house, imagine this light extending down into the basement, into the walls, up to the attic.
  • Use aromatherapy with pure sage, cedar, or rose oils
  • Place fresh flowers or eucalyptus in the area. Or if it is outside, plant colorful, blooming plants.
  • Make noise with drums, bells, gongs, bang pot lids together throughout the entire space. Open closet and cabinet doors, and bang noise into every corner of the house.
  • If it is outside, hang some wind chimes and ring them yourself if there is no wind.
  • Diffuse flower essences
  • Sprinkle holy water around and say some prayers
  • Burn epsom salts with a cap of 100% wood grain alcohol in a pie pan. Carry this burning pan around the room. I prefer this over smudging which stinks up the room with smoke which then must be cleared away before working inside.
  • Burn purifying incense such as gum mastic, frankincense or myrrh, or protection incense
  • Burn a protection candle made with intention and the addition of special herbs
  • Perform or play holy chants. Prayers should focus on divine love, gratitude, connection to the divine.
  • Play or sing holy or inspirational music – perhaps set up a tape player to repeat continuously and saturate the walls of the house with a more harmonious frequency
  • Sing, dance and play happy music
  • Host a party or get together with happy, positive people to deliberately change the atmosphere and the mental/emotional associations with the space. Wholesome laughter is extremely helpful.
  • Draw Reiki symbols in the air and projecting throughout all walls and corners of each room. I use Cho Ku Ray and Harth.
  • Use specific energy clearing pendulums. These include Spellbreaker, Mace, Releaser, Golden Hue, Isis. Contact me for more information.
  • Get rid of clutter – clutter creates stuck energy
  • Get rid of objects that strongly remind you of painful events
  • Rearrange or change the furniture or ornaments so it looks different and you relate differently to the space
  • Paint the walls of the effected area a different color

Let me know additional ways that you use for space clearing inside or out, and your experiences.

How to Deal with Overload

Start by reading Dealing with Overload if you haven’t done so first.

Where do you start?

The short answer is —ANYWHERE YOU CAN!

I like to start with deep breathing because it is instant stress relief. Taking deep breaths will start to release fear, paralysis, and clear the mind. To think straight on how to solve a problem, you have first to get oxygen to the brain. Even a few, slow, deep breaths will help. Any physical exercise, singing, dancing, heavy duty housework, chopping wood, laughing– all make you breathe.

Add music as it will instantly change your mood. If you need to accomplish physical work, combine it with energizing/happy music. Whereas, if you need to accomplish mental work, then combine it with soothing, relaxing music.

My top picks are to

  • meditate for a few minutes to clear my mind and affirm that I have access to internal resources to do what is needed
  • do some needed task, no matter how small

Sometimes I need to get totally away from things, and just do something relaxing or fun. This is the point of vacations — rest and renewal. This clears out the paralysis and gives me energy that I can then harness to address important issues. Make sure that any ‘fun’ item is not just mindless, time wasting like t.v./internet, but something like being with people you love and care about, or singing, dancing, laughing, sports, etc. that makes you breathe, releases stuck energy out of the body, and shifts your mood. Give yourself a time limit.

Then move to the current problem. Write down various things that have to be done to resolve whatever is overwhelming you, and do whatever you can that you can tackle it immediately. This might as simple as making some phone calls, setting an appointment, scheduling for some help. You do not have to know everything you need to do, just the next step. Do that!

If you don’t know what to do to resolve the issue that is overwhelming you, do other tasks that will be then out of the way for when you do know what to do with the area of concern. This could be your everyday needed tasks like washing the dishes, doing the laundry, food shopping, cooking, etc. I have found that getting your energy moving in any direction, relieves the paralysis in other areas.

Get help

Find someone who likes solving your type of problem and is good at it. For example, if your house is a mess and that is draining your energy just to look at it, find someone to come in and help you. If you can afford it, hire someone and delegate it. If not, barter, trade with a friend. In other words, I’ll trade you two hours with you coming to my house and helping me do ____ on Saturday, and I’ll come to help you do whatever you want help with for two hours the following week.

Just as two heads are better than one in solving a problem, four hands make the work go faster. When I hire someone to clean, I normally work with them doing those things that are best left to me. This might mean cleaning out a drawer or closet. If you work along with someone else, not only are you doubling the progress, but the other person will keep you on track, and the socialization while you work can even be fun.

Again, if money is an issue, find some other way to make it work. For example, I had some extra bedrooms in my house and at one time used the rent to pay for needed help. At other times, I traded a room for their labor in my house or farm. I bartered hypnosis for massage. I registered with a local Time Bank to use my skills to get help I needed. Many years ago, I traded babysitting with a couple of other mothers. Ask yourself, how can I get the help I need with ____? What do I have to sell/barter/share? Who can help me with ___?

Goal Setting

Lessening overload will always entail goal setting and ordinary problem solving. As mentioned, get the energy moving any way you can by doing something. Then do the next easiest task, and the next. For example, when I have to clean house, I start with the smallest, easiest room. This is usually the bathroom. Then I move on to the next easiest room, and so on. By the time, I get to the hardest room, I am already feeling better by seeing so much of the house looking good that I am in a more hopeful, better mood to take on the bigger job whether that day or the next.

However, some people like to tackle the hardest thing that they are avoiding first. What works for me in tacking whatever I find overwhelming is to get someone to work with me. It bypasses procrastination and generates tremendous energy that persists even after they leave. Having someone work with you is tremendously helpful because they are not emotionally invested in your problem. They may also have the skills you need and enjoy using them. They see solution where you just see problem. They are energized by your challenge, and you are drained. Their approach and possibility thinking can be positively contagious.

Be accountable to someone for taking action.

A client wanted help in getting rid of procrastination so that she could complete a writing project. So besides doing hypnosis, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) on procrastination and non-beneficial beliefs, I made a contract with her. She made a commitment to do  x_ pages and/or _x_  time writing, and I would rewrite/edit one chapter of a book I was working on. At the end of each day we were to email each other on what we had done. She submitted her short stories for a competition, and I completed a rewrite of my self-hypnosis book. It helped us both. You can make a similar contract with a friend.

Develop a do-able strategy or plan of attack.

Make lists and prioritize. Put it on the calendar. Then start checking off as you accomplish each thing. Make a note each night on what you have accomplished. Seeing progress as things are crossed off will make you feel better. If you don’t know how to set up a strategy, ask someone else. There are many forums, meet-ups, business organizations that offer help.

Can you make it fun?

Perhaps you can listen to something interesting as you work. For example, I used to put the Saturday Matinee broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera on while I was working in the kitchen. During that broadcast, not only did the kitchen get cleaned, but I did my major food preparation/ cooking for the week. That cooking made sure that I was going to eat right –important if you are to maintain a high level of energy. Because I was so mesmerized by the heavenly music, I was not caught up in “woe is me,” or “I hate doing this”, etc. I follow the same strategy with other mundane tasks.

If you have to go out and do something you have been avoiding, can you go with a friend or meet up afterwards? For example, I have friends who take a friend to their doctor visits. I know others who join a gym together, or go for a regularly scheduled walk. They get their exercise done and socialize at the same time. Make a commitment, and you will get it done.

Pay attention to basic self-care

Sleep, good nutrition, contact with others that care about you, fun and humor all provide the energy you need to solve problems and get out from under. Positive energy has to be coming in both to the physical body and to the spirit so that burnout does not occur. Find a way to get more coming in than is going out.

Pay attention to your self-talk

Your thoughts will help or hinder you. They will make it easier or harder. Become aware and shift from the negative ones quickly. Here are some: “Sooner or later, I figure it out.” “I find a way that works for me.” “I get the help I need to do this.” “I take it one step at a time.”

More Ways of How to Deal With Overload

There are a thousand ways to get rid of being overwhelmed. My favorite way is my own Infinite Intelligence Process. See Accessing More–Tapping into the Eternal, Unlimited Self with the Infinite Intelligence Process . Another book, Your Unlimited Potential will teach you self-hypnosis, stress management, Walking Mantras, and goal setting. The Emotional Freedom Technique is also very helpful, and I teach it to ALL my students and clients.

Dealing with Overload

How Overload Occurs

Overload occurs because stressors are piled on top of stressors before there is an inclination or understanding of the importance of clearing it, or the time, skill and resources to do so. Other matters may take priority especially if there is a crises.

Furthermore, it is difficult, not impossible, to heal what you don’t know about. Therefore, you should be grateful (“thank you for sharing”) when a upsetting memory arises, even one of minor importance, because it indicates that it requires resolution regardless of what action you took previously. What is unfinished and unhealed acts as a powerful magnet for more of the same. It consumes your vital life force, robbing you of the energy needed for health, happiness, goal achievement, and solving problems.

Triggers

Such memories can arise when there is a recent, similar event, or by anything present or associated (triggers) with the original event. Being in the same place at the same time, with the same people, doing the same thing are all triggers. Anniversaries trigger memories–pleasant and unpleasant. Focusing on a problem also attracts–one of the liabilities of anyone writing or speaking on an issue.

For example, when I speak, teach or write about how to work with smokers, I have a huge intake of people wanting to stop smoking. When I was teaching another class on secondary gain and the shadow, it was no surprise that I soon after attracted someone with these very issues. It was a reminder to practice what I preach, and just to witness rather than take an attack personally.

Memories are Linked

Imagine that you see a friend on the street, and that greeting is initially happy. However, if the last time that you saw that friend was at the funeral of a loved one, the current meeting will be tinged with the sadness of the previous event. The memory of that loss may trigger memories of all the other people you have known that have died.

Also, a thought, belief or judgment made at the first event will be triggered, whether conscious or not, and affect mood. The earlier judgement that “people are there to support me emotionally in time of need”, or “I am loved”, “I was so blessed to know this person (now deceased)”, will in the present create a very different mood than if the judgment was “life is cruel and unfair”.

Witnessing Instead of Judging

Why don’t you just notice a person’s character or behavior without emotional reaction? Just be a witness. If you go the zoo, do you get upset with the animals? Do you become fearful hearing a lion roar? If you are out in the wild, that roar might indicate that you are vulnerable and in danger. But, from the safety of the opposite side of the zoo bars, you can notice, and even enjoy it without feeling threatened. The lion is being itself perfectly. Same is true of the rats, snakes and skunks. No need to be upset because they are who they are. Their nature has nothing to do with who you are. Learn to respond with detachment, interest, or curiosity as to what made them that way.

Questions to Ask Yourself:

  • Am I threatened by this person’ s behavior?
  • Is it threatening my own sense of self, my confidence, my ability to earn a living or to obtain anything else that I want or need?
  • What is the truth of who I am and my ability?
  • Does what this person think of me invalidate my essential worth?
  • Does my happiness and the meaning of my life depend upon pleasing this person and receiving his approval, his permission in that I am on this planet, being and doing as I am?
  • Is this behavior/experience reminding me of other unpleasant experiences? If so, then know that they have surfaced in order to be healed. Jot them all down, and work on them as quickly as you can before they fade once again into the abyss of the unconscious.
  • What are the thoughts, beliefs and judgements behind my emotional reaction? Are they serving or limiting me? Do I need to change them? What beliefs or judgments do I now choose to hold?
  • What can I learn from this?
  • Were there any signs, any intuitive prompting that I was not acknowledging that would have safely negotiated around this problem or avoided it completely?”

The True Origins of Reiki

Mikao-Usui-2

In preparing to reprint Reiki–Path to Transformation, Volume 1, Hands on Healing, I came across an article entitled The True Origins of Reiki by Steve Gamble with quotes from Usui (pictured above) as located by Japanese Reiki expert, Hiroshi Doi. From there I read William Rand’s interesting interview with Hiroshi Doi for yet more background. Then I came across Usui’s own manual available on the internet, and part of Hayashi’s (pictured below), all of which I recommend.

Chujiro_Hayashi Today as copies of Usui’s and Hayashi’s original writings have come to light and have been translated from Japanese into English, we find that some mythical elements entered into the Western taught history of the Japanese healing system that we call Reiki and of its founder, Mikao Usui. All that we in the West knew of Reiki until recently came from Hawayo Takata, who brought it first to Hawaii and then to mainland United States. Her students and their students then spread it throughout the world, some making changes in the original Japanese form. We now know that some of what Takata told us of Usui’s background and Reiki’s origins was fictionalized. Perhaps it was ‘gussied up’ to make it more acceptable to a Western audience during and after World War II because of distrust of the Japanese with whom we were fighting.

takata Takata (pictured left) also turned Reiki into a lucrative teaching and healing business. The financial aspects, the ego’s appeal to the term ‘Master’, coupled with a fast time frame to attain the title may have tainted the Western practice of Reiki from what was a purer spiritual practice in Japan. And yet, without the ability of people to learn and teach quickly, it may not have been so widely disseminated.

Nonetheless, despite the fallacies in Takata’s story or the problems of ego and conducting it as a business, Reiki’s power and beauty to heal body, mind and spirit remain. As we now read some of Usui’s own words, we can be led to honor the deeply spiritual basis for Reiki and get this wonderful modality back on track as a the powerful spiritual practice it truly is.

While Takata always taught that Reiki healed mind, body and spirit, it seemed to me that more emphasis was placed on the body, perhaps because she herself was healed through Reiki treatments. Very little emphasis or time in the training was placed on meditation and spiritual development. Whereas, we now understand from Usui’s own words that Reiki is first and foremost meant to heal the mind and spirit first and then the body would follow in becoming strong and healthy. Consequently, spiritual development was strongly emphasized by him.

What is Reiki?

Quoting Usui, “Everything in the Universe possesses Reiki without any exception.” By the term ‘Reiki’ he meant universal life force energy inside everyone and everything. He also referred to this as the pure light that we are. Reiki was “a label meaning connection with the light or universal energy within.” It is through coming into oneness with this universal energy that gives Reiki its power and what allowed him also to offer healing to others.  “We humans hold the Great Reiki that fills the Great Universe. The higher we raise the vibration of our own being, the stronger the Reiki we have inside will be.”

Everything in the universe is produced and developed by the magnificent Reiki that fills the Great Universe. Humans are a microcosm that takes the Great Spirit from macrocosm; everyone holds a part of this Great Reiki in his body. Therefore, we must always try to cultivate spirituality so that we can receive as much Great Reiki of the Universe as possible…your committed training brings about the unification with the Universe…they effortlessly work as the absolute limitlessness. This is the true nature of being human.”

The Natural Law of the Great Universe and each human spirit as a small universe must be constantly united and exist as One.”

This sounds a bit like Jesus who said “the Father and I are One.” Reiki as taught in Japan was about learning to come into resonance with the universal energy. As Usui said “The Universe exists in me, and I exist in the Universe.”

The story that Usui spent years searching for a healing method is incorrect. In fact, he said “I have never studied any methods for disease treatment.” Rather it was coming into full resonance with the Universe at the conclusion of his 21 day fast that the healing energy came as a thunderbolt.

But while not searching for a way to heal physically, Usui was searching for the meaning and purpose of life. Intellectually, he concluded that the purpose was to become happy, and to him happiness meant the attainment of the state of the peaceful mind. But he was dealing with anger and fear. Consequently, he entered a Zen buddhist temple in Kyoto and studied Zen for three years. However, this did not give him the true experience of having a peaceful mind.

“We humans are given life and a mission from the Universe. When it gives us life and a mission, it can never impose illness or misfortune on us. Regardless of what happens in life, we should trust the Universe and keep a peaceful mind state in order to accomplish our mission. This is the purpose and meaning of life.”

Doi says that Usui “thought that he would not deserve to live any more if he could not attain the meaning of life. So he climbed Mt. Kurama for meditation and fasting with the readiness to die.

He gradually felt that the Reiki inside him and the Reiki surrounding Mt. Kurama were vibrating with each other and the vibration became stronger day by day. At midnight of the 21st day, a thunder-like shock hit him on the top of his head, and he lost consciousness. Then in the pre-dawn hours, he woke up to find himself filled with an amazing refreshment he had never felt before. “I am the Universe, the Universe is me! The universe exists in me, and I exist in the universe. Light exists in me, and I exist in the light.”

x,7Elwf0000.jpg.pagespeed.ic.OqaOknhOGA Usui also taught that Reiki was a method based on intuitive power among the universe. Reiki as traditionally taught in Japan involves a spiritual awakening that is intellectual at first, but needs to be followed by a true awakening, which is an intuitive understanding by Shinga (Soul/Higher Self). This then needs to be unified with truth. The objective was to find the inner light within and then bring the soul into perfect resonance with it.

Usui said that healing power was given to him by accident during fasting and that he did not know the true essence of Reiki. Reiki symbols were not part of the experience. In fact, Usui did not even use symbols himself, but rather developed the symbols later to help his students, who were originally members of the Japanese navy, to focus. Focusing on the symbols and chanting their names were considered training wheels, but the object was to go beyond them. The symbols had no power in themselves.

Usui wrote about developing the ability to heal, “I have a hard time explaining exactly. I realise that I’ve received the ability of healing accidentally when I felt the air in mysterious way during fasting…I was not taught this method by anybody nor studying to get intuitive power.”

Finally, Usui taught to apply one’s hands in administering Reiki without any control of the mind. Relax, open the mind, trust the universe, and just allow the energy to flow. Take the mind and ego out of the process. However, I have personally found that directed thought and intention with a clear image of wellness accompanied with a peaceful mind, gratitude, love or joy, has had powerful results with my clients.

Further Misconceptions around Mikao Usui and Reiki

  • Usui was not a Christian, but rather a Buddhist of a Shinto related sect
  • He held a variety of jobs, but he was not a professor of a university in Kyoto, Dean, President or Doctor, or graduate from any university. Therefore, Takata’s story that he was a principal of a Christian school and challenged by a student as to why Christians were not pursuing the example of Jesus to heal, is false. However, the story that he tripped coming down Mt. Kurama after meditating and found that he had healing ability in his hands following his peak experience there, is true.
  • Usui had about 2000 students, and 16 masters. Hayashi and Takata were great grand masters of Reiki, but Hayashi was not his appointed successor, nor the president of the Gakkai, and neither was Takata. This chart comes from Gamble’s article, and page 183 of Doi’s book.

Releasing Anger – example

A Practical Application

The bad news is that when you write a book on Releasing Anger Without Killing Anyone, the focus required to write a book may bring about an experience to apply what you know (or think you do). The good news is that you do know something to harness that energy constructively and then move it out of your system more quickly than you did in the past. Think of it as an exam. Do you know what you are talking about or not? Is it just an intellectual or a practical knowing? Is there more yet to learn?

So one week ago a tenant, as she was moving out of my house, left water running. Gallons of water poured down from the second floor bathroom to the first floor living room, and down to the basement below. Rugs, a mattress, books, furniture and other things got wet. Now almost half of the living room ceiling has to be replaced, drywall dust is everywhere. And as much as possible things were boxed up and moved out of the living room along with the furniture. Likewise, two basement rooms were disrupted in order to mop up the water, and get things out of harm’s way. So not only is my living room unusable but so is the dining room and hall, and those two basement rooms as well.

Immediately taking a long view of the problem, I knew that regardless of how much time, energy, work and out-of pocket expense would be involved, regardless of the bad timing and other demands upon me both health wise and financially, the problem would be eventually fixed, and the house would be restored to it’s former beauty. In other words, the problem was temporary. That tenant is now fully gone from my house, and I have a new, wonderful person living here and other workmen helping me clean up the mess.

I knew that I needed to harness the anger into constructive action. So I called people to get the help and advice I needed, and start or supervise the work. I did a lot of the Infinite Intelligence Process to both dump stress and access the wisdom within. I did EFT tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique), dowsing for emotional healing, and meditation because I did not want the anger to poison me or cause me to get more sick. I wanted any possible contributory factors healed. And I also did not want to project my anger back to my former tenant as it would then be a curse on her head. And because I believe that we are all connected, what I send out comes back to me.

I focused on what I had to be grateful for. I asked myself what I could learn and grow from this experience, how I could prevent something like this happening in the future, and what I might have done differently that could have (but not necessarily would have) prevented the damage occurring. In other words, I was actively looking to pull a blessing out of the experience.

Then I wrote a letter to my tenant to get everything off of my chest because she took no responsibility for her actions and was instead blaming me. I felt it necessary that she understand the ramifications of her negligence so she is more careful elsewhere. This stopped the conversations looping in my head.

I hired someone to repair the damage and then paint the entire living room ceiling. I found someone to clean when the construction and painting are done. And I am getting a record of expenses in case I go to court to collect damages. In other words, I did everything I could. Now, it is just a matter of getting the work completed.

I learned long ago that groaning over damage done is a waste of precious energy that you need to stay healthy and address the problem. Complaining to people who cannot help you is one thing as an immediate, very short vent, but counterproductive otherwise. Best to talk only to those that can offer some good information and advice. Blaming her or blaming myself wasn’t going to be helpful. Using the problem as an excuse for not doing something else would also be counterproductive.

I would have loved to had someone just hold me. But since I don’t have a partner, I grabbed a cat and snuggled with him. I sat with my piggies. I hugged my dogs. I looked up at the sky. I picked up and talked to the toads. I noticed some of the abundant sweetness that is on my farm. I remembered that I am loved, that I have meaning and purpose in this world, that this is a beautiful place, and I am choosing to be alive and present.

At other times and places, I may have made love, watched funny movies, gone dancing or done something nice with friends just to discharge energy and regroup. But what is important is that you actively do something. There is always something still left to enjoy and appreciate—even a memory to lift your spirit.

Did I pass? I think so. Will I do things differently in future? Yes. Will I forget the lessons? No. Can what I learned help someone else? Yes, I think so.

Surfing as a Metaphor for Life

What you can learn from surfers

I was watching my son out riding his paddle board in the ocean and getting back up after after wipeout. It reminded me of the many times that I have watched him surf in many places over the years.  And I was thinking of how surfing can remind us of so many important things for living our lives.

  • Get in the water.

First of all, to surf, you have to get into the water–all the way in. That’s the only way you can do it. And, yes, it’s cold and uncomfortable. Keep moving forward and getting deeper in anyway.

  • Work with the natural energy.

There is no use fighting the waves. This is the unstoppable raw force of nature. You either ride them into the shore or sideways inside the curve. But in any case, you are working with the energy, not against the natural momentum.

  • Stay fully present and pay attention.

The ocean demands respect. You respect it by acknowledging it’s raw power, and you pay attention every moment or you get washed out or into a precarious situation that you can’t handle. You are being forced to be fully present. This is one of it’s gifts.

  • Know your limits.

The ocean can be thrilling or you can drown. Watching not only the size of the waves as they approach but the tide, the direction of the current towards dangerous rocks or other obstacles, and your fatigue level can signal when you should get out for that day or move elsewhere.

  • Position yourself.

Surfers paddle over the small crests and low breakwater to get to where the action is. They get into position for the right opportunities.

  • Seize the opportunity and catch the waves.

If you watch surfers, they are out there just waiting for the moment when the right wave is approaching. Too big and they dive below the surface. Too small, and they let it pass by. But when just the right size comes towards them that they can handle, they quickly adjust themselves to ride it as far as it will take them.

  • Find the sweet spot and flow.

Once you are riding the wave, following the natural curve and flow of the water, you feel the exhilaration of being in the flow–that magical space where the natural energy carries you easily, effortlessly to your destination. Surfers know enough when to stop paddling and just enjoy the ride.

  • Keep in shape with practice.

While looking for the best waves, surfers may ride smaller ones just to keep in practice while waiting for something better.

  • Do it again and again.

And then they do it again and over again. Consistent practice of positioning themselves, paying attention, catching the waves and riding them over and over.

  • Sometimes  you get a good one, sometimes you don’t.

Whether the surfing is good or not, surfers just know that they are keeping in shape and building their skills for when the right opportunity comes along.

  • Keep your balance

Surfing requires that you are making adjustments all the time to stay on top.

  • Get back up.

Surfers know that they are going to be knocked down into the water. They experience many wipe outs. But regardless, they climb back on board.

  • Remember to attach your lifeline

Surfers rely on their boards to get them back to shore. So they attach a line to themselves so that even if washed out, they can recover and get back to shore safely for another try.
