Getting Sucked Down the Rabbit Hole

Realizing that I was definitely off center with the intense emotions before and after the 2016 US Presidential Election, I had to regain my equilibrium. I had gotten lost in a litany of distressing events and obsessed with surfing the internet for news to try to understand what was happening and why. As a result, I was vacillating in the emotional sea of worry, upset, depression and gloom.

Reconnecting with My Core

I needed to practice what I preach as a stress management expert. While I think it is imperative to be informed about current events, the forces that are guiding those events, and the big picture of overall trends, there has to be a balance between awareness with detachment and then action if appropriate. A long view of history shows continuous conflicts. Yet mankind has continued and some progress has been made. While there are global and national issues to be addressed, there are also local and personal issues as well. One still has to carry water and chop wood, but being aware of myself as a soul, as a spiritual being and consciousness beyond time and space, helps me immensely. 

Basic Self Care

Balancing the mind and emotions has to start with adequate sleep as the foundation along with wholesome food and exercise. I practice Donna Eden’s 5 minute exercise routine, which helps balance the brain and body so I can think better, raises vitality and gets the body’s energy to flow properly. I also drink Source Energy Medicine (energized water). Besides hydrating the system, it is intended to raise your vibration while it deals with health issues. 

Stress Management

40580f831cc2f1219357730c661ae625 I have many tools for this , but the first thing I do to dump stress and clear my mind so that I can see things more clearly is to use the Infinite Intelligence Process that I have written about in Accessing More — Tapping Into the Eternal, Unlimited Self with the Infinite Intelligence Process. One part of this three-pronged modality is to set up a hypnotic or dowsing program (several paragraphs long) that is run by a shortcut command consisting of 2 trigger words. I use the words “process” and “go” to run the program. For example,

“From the perspective of my High Self, process and resolve everything I have read and heard on the news and internet today. Keep only what is true, relevant and important, and discard the rest. Release any unnecessary fear or worry so that I can sleep peacefully through the night. Go.”

What is mine to do?

If I am going to pick a battle to fight, an issue to address, and a way of making a difference, I need to prioritize. What is my job to do? Where can I make a difference? Perhaps all that I can do quickly is to make others aware of what is going on. Perhaps I can sign a petition, send an email to appropriate parties. A colleague advocates getting involved in town meetings. And I agree that locally is where most of our power lies. But it comes back to asking where I want to focus my energy.

To help me make better choices, I use another part of the Infinite Intelligence Process, which is to affirm that I already have an inner wisdom that is resourceful and capable of meeting any challenge and making decisions. I start out with “there is a part of me that knows____ and that part is ___.” I let the words sink in without having to consciously know the answers. Rather, I trust that by just saying/thinking it with assurance that some divine wisdom is accessible to me, something is initiated to make it true. In the best sense of the word, it is a statement of faith that activates change on an unconscious level. For example,

“There is a part of my being that knows the best use of my time, energy and resources today. And that part is making that information conscious now in a way that ever more efficiently guides my actions. I am surrounded with whatever I need to use those resources wisely and effectively. I know what to do and how to proceed.”

The Importance of Setting Meaningful Goals

Goal setting is not about having a ‘to do’ list, although specific action designed to move you closer to achieving major goals will be on that list. I am talking about setting goals as objectives that inspire you to achieve things truly meaningful to you. Having meaningful goals helps me to focus my energies in a positive direction and to use my time and energy wisely. However, in between projects, I can get sidetracked just as I was recently. So I need to set new goals as I just finished with my classes and conferences for the year. Without clear objectives and meaningful goals, I can wallow in non-productive rumination and activities. I am reminded of the folk saying

“Idleness is the devil’s playground.”

Looking for the Good

Keeping a keen awareness of all the good, the beautiful and the love that is the world creates balance. I need to hear some good news, and physically connect with people and hug them. This helps me to maintain hope and keep my concern about the bad things happening and worry about the future in check.

Years ago when I was going through separation and a divorce, I would ask people to tell me a joke. I really needed to laugh. And as they rattled through a joke or two, I did laugh. Then as I retold that joke to the next person, I laughed again. They laughed, and we all built up a repertoire that kept our spirits bouncing despite whatever challenges any of us were facing.

Random Acts of Kindness

Probably the fastest way to feel better and get out of your own head and put your problems aside for a while is to do something for someone else. It always helps me and just feels good to help others. I think I am sometimes the guardian angel for all those turtles trying to cross the road. So on my list of things to regularly do to keep myself grounded and centered, I am going to deliberately look for more ways to help somebody else.

Count Your Blessings

While I periodically count my blessings, I now commit to make it an essential part of my daily routine. Some people already do this as part of their evening prayers, or when offering a prayer before a meal. When stressed, it helps to remember that regardless of what is upsetting me or might happen in the future, for today I have a roof over my head, food to eat, running water and electricity. For today, I have many blessings. Then I just do what I can for that day. Planning helps. Action helps. Worry doesn’t.

Write a Letter of Appreciation

Recently, I came across the name of Martin Seligman, psychologist, former president of the American Psychological Association, author of the classic books Learned Optimism and Authentic Happiness, and founder of the Positive Psychology movement. He advocates writing a letter of appreciation to someone who has touched your life. This is not a new idea, but a very powerful one. I can tell you for myself, that receiving a sincere compliment or heartfelt thank you totally makes your day. And especially if it is written down where you can reread it, the message touches your heart again and again. Such a letter blesses the author as well as the receiver.

Gratitude

Seligman also recommends that you practice daily remembering  Three Good Things, also called the Three Blessings. Basically, in the evening, you write down three good things that happened that day. But this is more than a simple inventory of things for which you are grateful. He asks you to think of why that happened, or what traits about yourself allowed you to appreciate or enjoy those things. Thinking of good things increases your well-being and lifts depression. But thinking of what you did, or what it was that allowed you to notice or appreciate those things, makes you will recognize that you have the ability to bring happiness to yourself and others.  

“Go to where the problem isn’t.” 

I remember the quote above by Deepak Chopra. Deliberately move yourself physically or at least mentally to a place devoid of the problem. This is the point of a vacation. But at home, you might take yourself for a walk. Or just look around and focus on any good thing you see. It might a squirrel going after nuts, or a pair of them chasing one another up a tree. It could be the mist coming up off the low ground, or a brilliance of the fall leaves, or playing with your pets or children. I know someone who regularly buys flowers. Staring at a bouquet can be a meditation in itself. For me, I might just hang out with the piggies or the new born bunnies.

Spend a moment of ABSOLUTE ATTENTION on something/anything else.

Break the pattern. Distract the mind. Do something fun or interesting.

Maybe you visit a friend or loved one or do something fun. Comedies help as does reading an interesting book, doing meditation, having a hot bath, or getting bodywork. I know someone who bounces on a trampoline. My son surfs. Skiing, mountain climbing, tennis and other sports force you to be totally focused in the moment. 

But wherever you are, day or night, there is some place you can go to at least in your mind. Think of any place or anyone that makes you feel good. Do you have photos handy? Are they hung up where you see them regularly? Take a moment to stare at the photo, and get in touch with the love that is there, the happy memory as if it is happening all over again.

 Use Music

Music is an instant state changer so keep handy both calming music and happy, upbeat ones to help you. The power of this is that when you go back to addressing issues, you are re-energized, able to make better decisions, and more effective action.

Celebrate

Lastly, life is about celebration and sharing of life with one another. Sing, dance, have a party. Or as a Yiddish toast goes, L’Chaim, which means:

TO LIFE!

How to Avoid Burnout

As an Entrepreneur, I am aware of the stress caused by wearing all the hats in a business. The extensive range of information and skills needed for each, the time required, and the stress of the learning curve are DAUNTING! As a result, work hours can interfere with what should be time for rest and renewal leading to burnout and illness.

But it is not hard work or long hours per se that cause burnout. If you are passionate about what you do, that passion feeds your spirit and energizes you even when working long hours. Burnout is caused when more energy is being withdrawn from your energy reserves by multiple stressors than is coming in through rest and renewal. Those stressors include anything that consume energy—bad food, bad habits, too little sleep, toxicity, not just the frustrations, overwhelm, and other mental and emotional issues. 

Burnout is simply going into the red with a bounced energy account. And as with a checking account, it only takes one cent to do that. Furthermore, once you overdraw, it is not a simple matter of just putting the penny back. There are fines to pay. So it takes more money to undo the overdraft. And it takes more energy to undo the damage of an energy overdraft.

While it is important to have multiple ways of reducing stress so that you are not leaking energy, stress management is not the whole answer. Putting  together a well-rounded life that feeds your spirit and enhances

  • overall health, 
  • provides happiness,
  • connection with others,
  • fulfillment, meaning and purpose,

will give you the internal resources and increased life force to deal with the ups and downs in life as they come. And from that place examine and challenge your beliefs, thoughts, judgments, assumptions that underlie so much stress, and commit to a regular stress management practice. All together, this will give you the energy reserves to not just cope but to thrive.

What is stress?

Stress is a demand upon your system for energy. A stressor is whatever is requiring energy from you to process or deal with mentally, emotionally, physically, or even spiritually. This includes preparing for even happy events (holidays, vacations, weddings), doing your usual routine as well as having to cope with extra, unexpected additional expenses, problems, malfunction, delays, toxicity, poisons in food, water, air, cleaning or personal care products, allergens, EMF (electro magnetic frequency), geopathic zones, noise, and overstimulation.

Interestingly, we need a certain amount of stress to challenge us to learn, grow, and to explore new dimensions of both ourselves and our world. Insufficient stress creates stagnation, boredom, depression, and mental/ emotional/ spiritual rot–yes, rot! Growth requires a stimulus, a reason to get off the couch.  It is all about finding the proper balance. Understanding the Stress Equation

As with the previous analogy of a bank account, there have to be energy reserves to cover all of the demands placed upon you.

  • Demands upon your energy have to be adequately met by both your reserves and new energy being regenerated.
  • What comes in has to cover what goes out or a bounced check situation arises causing breakdown in physical or mental health.

The 3 Stages of Stress

  1. Alarm Reaction – In this initial stage, you experience symptoms such as sweaty palms, tension or tightness in muscles, holding your breath, rapid pulse, indigestion, insomnia. 
  2. Stage of Resistance – Whereas in this stage, the stress symptoms go away, and you appear to be doing fine. You seem to have adapted, and have a ‘handle’ on it. There is a danger during this adaptive phase because you may become cocky and stop doing those things you need to do to take good care of yourself and to resolve your issues on a regular basis. Consequently, as things build up, you tap too heavily into your energy reserves.
  3. Stage of Exhaustion – this stage is where you actually break down. It can be caused by something minor–just one more thing too many (the ‘straw that broke the camel’s back’). All the stress symptoms come back but are not easily dismissed, and illness or even death results.

What to do about it?

The basic strategy as outlined below is as follows:

  1. find ways to get energy into your system 
  2. stop energy leaking out
  3. establish regular routines to do the above.

How to get energy into your system 

You get energy into your system by:

  1. improving your overall physical health
  2. improving your overall happiness and connectedness
  3. creating or focusing upon the meaning and purpose in your life
  4. connecting to your spiritual and internal resources

First, Improve your overall physical health

  • Sleep
  • Relaxation
  • Nourishing, balanced nutrition
  • Healthy Gut allows you to digest and assimilate what you eat
    • ingest: probiotics, yogurt, kefir, naturally fermented foods such as naturally (not commercial) sauerkraut and kimchee, kombucha, and fermentable fibers (yam, sweet potatoes, yucca, and whole oranges (with fiber), Jerusalem artichokes, lentils) butter, garlic, dark chocolate with 70% cacao or more
    • eliminate as much as possible: sugar and processed foods; grains unless non-GMO, pesticide free and specially prepared; wheat and industrial seed oils that cause leaky gut; pesticide ingestion from any food or drink; antibiotics and other medications such as birth control, steroids, antacids and NSAIDS (see http://www.nsaidslist.com) such as aspirin that are taken as anti-inflammatory/pain relief medications; and parasites
  • Deep breathing, singing
  • Exercise including dancing, yoga, and anything to balance energy flow, and any movement or physical labor
  • Bodywork
  • Energy medicine -there are many modalities, but here are a few more: Reiki, Source Energy Medicine, Donna Eden’s Daily Energy Routine (see Resources at the end)

What can you do today to take of your physical health?

Second, Improve your overall happiness and connectedness

  • Laughter
  • Love, hugs and emotional support
  • Community/network
  • Prayer
  • Anything inspirational
  • Anything that feeds your spirit or makes you happy
  • Having fun
  • Nature
  • Healing music – sacred, calming, hemisync, happy

What can you do today to connect and enjoy life?

Third, Create or focus upon the meaning and purpose in your life.

  • Do you have a reason to bound out of bed in the morning with excitement to get started? 
    • This could be your job, a volunteer activity, or a hobby.
  • Can you see how something you are doing now is or could be doing now could help someone else?
  • How can you be of service?  
    • This could be any act of kindness or compassion to a person or animal, a phone call to someone you care about, just affirming your love and belief in another, or perhaps just listening or being there.

What can you do today help someone? How can your work serve?

Fourth, Connecting to your spiritual and internal resources

  • Prayer, meditation.
  • The Infinite Intelligence Process – tapping into the part of you that knows more than you do consciously. 
    • “There is a part of me that knows ___ and is assisting me now to ___ with grace and ease.”

When is a good time for you to check inside with your inner guidance?

How to stop energy leaking out

  • Detoxification
  • Resolving emotional issues – current and past
  • Restoring gut flora
  • Daily stress management–EFT, self hypnosis, Infinite Intelligence Process, etc.
  • Meditation
  • Journaling
  • Goal setting
  • Setting and and focusing on priorities
  • Shifting beliefs,
    • play devil’s advocate – look for the positive evidence, the positive ‘whys or why nots’
    • “What if __ could work?”
    • “What if I could ___?”
    • “What if ___ (the negative authority figure/person) was wrong?”
    • “What is the worst that could happen?”
  • Turn a challenge/problem into an opportunity or object of curiosity
    • “Where is the opportunity in this?”
    • “How can I turn this into a blessing?”
    • “What positive thing/s can I learn from this to be ___ (better/healthier/stronger/more successful)?”
  • Focus on helpful thoughts to shift your attitude
  • Gratitude
  • Notice what is with detachment – Adopt an attitude of curiosity
    • “That’s interesting.”
  • Notice what is , without taking it personally
    • It’s probably not about you.
  • Notice what is without jumping to judgment or unproven, upsetting interpretations of events
    • “How can I look at this in a way that doesn’t bother me nearly as much?”
  • Pick your battles
  • Focus your energy where it is going to do some good
  • Know your limits and make peace with that
    • “I do what I can. I let go of the rest.”
  • Get help
  • Look for resources
    • “Who do I know that could deal with this better/differently and how would they approach/handle it?”
    • “Who do I know that can help me with this?”
    • “What help/resources do I need to resolve this and how to I get them?”
  • Balance – between work, rest and recreation, between being inside and being outside, being with people and being alone, between having silence or quiet time and sensory stimulation

What is something you can do to stop leaking energy physically? What can you do to stop leaking energy mentally and emotionally? What can help you today?

Basic Guideline:

Upsetting emotions leak energy. Happy or peaceful emotions add. 

While some emotions can come from physical conditions, most emotions come from thoughts such as how we interpret what is going on. What are we thinking in our own mind about the people or events in our lives? Are we saying that they are wrong, bad, awful?  Interpretations can be wrong. They can be based on incomplete or faulty evidence. Thoughts and the fixed beliefs that form around them can be challenged and changed.

Learn from the Past

If you have experienced burnout before, take precautionary measures now to avoid it happening again by addressing your areas of vulnerability. 

What are the things you have done that have caused you to burn out in the past?

What are the things you have not done that have caused you to burn out?

If you think about the things you must have or do to avoid burnout, and if you know the things that do or have made a positive difference in your energy level and functioning in the past, then make a commitment to do them now on a regular basis. 

What are those key things for you?

But don’t try to go from doing nothing, to trying to make massive changes all at once. But do do something. Take a step, and keep it going. Then do something else that makes sense. This is a process of creating a new lifestyle, a new way of living on a daily basis, not something that you do once in a while and forget about it.

Establish Routines for a Healthy Lifestyle

Start slow, but start somewhere

  • Set up a morning routine or ritual that starts the day off focusing on the most important use of your time and energy—the priorities of the day. 

What might be a helpful, doable, morning routine?

  • Create an after work routine that brings balance, fun, meaning and fulfillment
    • connect with people you care about (dinner with friends or family, reading a bedtime story to your kids) 
    • do something for fun or a change of pace

What might be a helpful, doable, afternoon or early evening routine?

  • Create a routine or ritual before sleep
    • do something to help you to relax (hot shower, a slow bath, listening to soothing music)
    • do something to gain perspective from any stress of the day or anything upsetting on the news (meditating, journaling, reflection)
    • acknowledge your achievements
    • take a moment to focus on gratitude and the blessings of your life.

How Self Hypnosis Saved My Life!

And more than once too!!!

I was having a bad day, but then it was really just one more of many such days in a bad year in general.

I had gone into a lawyer’s office to give testimony as to how my mother had slipped, tumbling head over her walker and down their dark stairway as she was led into their office by the receptionist. Recounting that day’s events and the consequences of her broken bones, called up painful memories of my mother screaming in pain for weeks. As a result of her accident, I was pushed into being her round-the-clock caregiver because instead of transitioning from the hospital to rehab, she signed herself out telling the doctors that “my daughter will take care of me.”

It was an ordeal that left me only a few hours sleep for the duration of six full weeks. This was doing the work of 6 nurses–3 each on 8 hour shifts Monday through Friday, and another three on the weekend. I had no help, and she was ineligible because she had signed herself out. As a result, my business was on hold, and my own life force was completely drained. Even after she was able to get around on her walker or wheelchair again, there was no joy, no social life, no business life, no privacy or moments for myself. Unconsciously, I suspect that I didn’t want to live anymore.

To add injury to the testimony, one of the lawyer’s accused me of lying. That’s what really brought up the memories in full color and intensity. He had no idea of what my mother went through and what I also sacrificed to take care of her.

So I came home and made what I thought would be a healthy lunch of a shrimp omelet.

It was just after Thanksgiving, 2001. My mother had wanted to serve shrimp for my son (Mark) who was visiting us in New Jersey from California. We ate it then, and again the day after. Mark had wanted me to go with him to visit the ruins of the World Trade Center, which we did over the weekend. There we saw all the letters, memorials placed around the fencing, and workers still digging through the rubble. Then I put my son on the plane to go back to the West Coast–always an emotional event for a mother to say goodbye to her offspring.

I had been at the Hudson River just 5 miles away on that fateful day of 9/11. And while I didn’t see the buildings fall, I did walk through all the dust, which also covered my car. I had gone to the Medical Center to await victims in order to offer my hypnosis services to burn patients. (If you get to a burn patient quickly, hypnosis can mitigate the severity of those burns.) However, only six patients arrived because the others were dead, and I was sent home.

One of my clients, Luke, had died at Windows of the World Restaurant after just returning from vacation the day before. He was there to set up a business meeting. Luke got a call out to his lover before he died. The last time I had seen him was at a funeral of a close mutual friend, Rodney, who was also on the Board of Directors for my business. So Luke’s death brought up thoughts of Rodney’s death, which brought up thoughts of my Dad’s death, which is why I was living with my mother to begin with–to assist her in her grieving process.

Another friend, Nelson, also worked at the World Trade Center. On the previous Friday, Nelson was told to take his department of 40 people out to lunch and to tell them that their department was being liquidated by their new Japanese owners. On Friday, they were despondent about losing their jobs. However, a few days later, all those not let go, were dead because they were on the very floor where the plane flew in. Losing their job turned into a blessing for them and their families.

Anyway, still upset after seeing the lawyer, I made my omelet. Within 30 minutes I went into anaphylactic shock. My throat was swollen up, I was beet red, it was difficult to breathe, and I knew I was in big trouble. I paused before calling for help –did I want to live or not? After all, life held no satisfaction anymore. I had given up my office and business in preparation for a move to be near my son on the west coast, only to be side railed by my mother’s health issues and having to give up those plans to become her full-time caregiver instead. It would have been so easy to slip away, and no one would have thought that it was suicide, just an ‘unfortunate’ accident.

But I did finally choose to live, and in my by this time confused mental state, called a doctor, not 911. In my last moment’s of clarity, I walked out to the drive to await the ambulance. As I was already very weak, I laid down in the cop’s car. The police officer had arrived first. My vision was soon gone, but I overheard the cop tell the medics that I was in and out of consciousness. I don’t know if I had truly passed out or was just in trance. Luckily, I lived just 10 minutes away from a major medical center, and they sent a doctor, not just a medic, to my house. He gave me a shot that brought my vision back.

The emergency doc was (get this) Dr. Lamorte (translated from Italian as “the death”). The doc told me his patients thought his name was funny. In my condition, I didn’t think it was funny!

Doctor Lamorte wanted to admit me. But I told him that as I was a hypnotherapist, I just wanted him to leave me in the Emergency Room, and come back and check on me. A hour or two later he discharged me. He said “you did this yourself. My drugs wouldn’t have worked for 8 hours.” 

What was I doing to be discharged so soon? Well, I couldn’t do the Emotional Freedom Technique since my arms were hooked up to intravenous tubes. And I couldn’t do Reiki for the same reason. But what I did do from the moment I knew I was dying, was to drop down into deep hypnosis to stay calm, focus on my breathing, and then over and over again to imagine my throat and bronchial tubes relaxing and opening up. As a former classical singer, I knew how to relax my throat muscles, and so that was what I imagined for the entire time from the driveway at home until I was discharged from the hospital. And so even while I’m grateful for the injection, I may not have made it to the hospital without doing what I did.

But this wasn’t the first time that self-hypnosis saved my life. There was another time that I was caught in a rip-tide and pulled rapidly out to sea. I flipped over on my back once I knew no one could see me, hear me, and that I couldn’t out swim the current, and I was getting full of water from the waves. I just went into that calm place of alpha to float on my back while breathing before each wave that washed over me. Eventually, I must have floated out of the current because several men were dragging out of the surf to what was a much closer distance to shore.

Then there were other challenges that I won’t go into here that could have gone badly if I did not know how to quickly slip into that place we call open-eye hypnosis to stay completely calm, fully present, and deal most effectively with a potentially dangerous situation.

Consequently, I ADVISE EVERYONE TO LEARN HOW TO ACCESS THAT STATE quickly, dependably with SELF HYPNOSIS.

  • It may save your life as it did mine.
  • It may well reduce the severity of any problems you do face.
  • It will allow you to instantly reduce stress.
  • It will allow you to become calm and focused so that you can think clearly to an effective response and solution.

Avoiding Burnout in Business & Personal Life

As an Entrepreneur, I am aware of the stress caused by wearing all the hats in a business. The extensive range of information and skills needed for each, the time required, and the stress of the learning curve are DAUNTING! As result, work hours can interfere with what should be time for rest and renewal leading to burnout and illness.
But it is not hard work or long hours per se that cause burnout.
If you are passionate about what you do, that passion feeds your spirit and energizes you. You can work into the night in a burst of creativity and fall into bed with satisfaction and a smile upon your face. If you like the people or environment in which you work and live, that too can feed your spirit. If you work all day and then sing or dance at night, or spend some time at an enjoyable hobby, or go for a hike, you may be physically tired but internally renewed.
Burnout is is caused when more energy is being drained from your body, mind and spirit than is coming in.
Stressors include bad food, bad habits, too little sleep, toxicity, as well as the mental and emotional issues. Are you spending long hours doing what you do not like without also doing some fun activities on the flip side? Are you working or living with people you don’t like or who don’t seem to acknowledge or appreciate you and not counterbalancing it with people that do like and appreciate you? Are you only doing things that are frustrating, tasks that lack meaning or purpose? Are you failing to see progress towards meaningful goals, and not seeing the way forward?
You cannot ignore putting fun into your life.
Avoiding burnout means restoring balance. This includes meaningful work, play with adequate time for rest and renewal, an outlet for creativity and for anything that ignites your inner spark. It is a balance between having time alone and time with people you love or appreciate who also love and appreciate you, between being inside and being outside, between silence and pleasing sounds, between movement and stillness. It is a balance between working to goals that give your life meaning, while being grateful for your blessings and celebrating every step along the way.
It is important to have multiple ways of reducing stress so that there is always something that you can use under any particular circumstance. Not every method will work all the time. But as important as it is, stress management is not the whole answer.
The other part of the energy equation is to find a way also to bring in more energy so that you feel vibrantly alive and have the internal resources to deal with things as they come. What makes your soul sing? There are probably lots of things that you can think of, or currently work for you now or have worked for you in the past.  Address both ends of the energy equation:

Stop energy leaking out!

Get more energy coming in!

It’s a matter then of deliberately doing enough of both to keep your energy reserves in balance.
Preventing burnout is about putting together a meaningful well-rounded life plus dealing with mental/emotional stress adequately as it comes up.

Even before adding hypnotic languaging, visualizations or interventions, Reiki significantly

  • speeds up healing,
  • reduces or eliminates pain,
  • stress,
  • detoxifies the system,

  • stamina,
  • improves digestion
  • and sleep,
  • calms the nerves and
  • mental chatter, and
  • improves overall well-being.

Some problems just seem to melt away without discussion or intervention. Colds and flu became nonexistent for me several years following my first Reiki class in 1990. But combining the two modalities make an unbeatable healing tool.

Self use of Reiki and hypnosis has

  • saved my life more than once and has
  • severely reduced the negative consequences of accidents, illness and other challenges.

It has made a

  • profound difference in my personal growth,
  • emotional healing, and has
  • deepened my spiritual life.

 Reiki–Path to Transformation – 3 volumes

These books were originally written in 1992 and revised continually since. The latest version is 2017. They are still current and important as they bring the best of both modalities together in a powerful, easy to understand and practice way.

I was the first to teach HypnoReiki!

Putting the two modalities together as early as 1990, and writing about it soon after, certifying people across India in HypnoReiki, and teaching how to integrate hypnosis and Reiki across the United States at multiple national hypnosis conferences and also throughout India since 1992, I believe I was the first to partner these two modalities! However, I did not trademark the name, and another person came along and did so.

Integrating Reiki with Hypnosis

Learning Reiki in 1990 while operating a hypnosis practice, I immediately started integrating it into my work with hypnosis clients more and more. When a Reiki client came for hands-on-treatment, I would use only an abbreviated hypnotic induction or none at all because the Reiki energy itself creates a hypnotic state. I then followed with offering helpful hypnotic suggestions and visualizations appropriate for them as I was working on the body. Then after the hands-on-work was done, I might have them sit in a chair, do the Reiki mind-to-mind reprogramming technique (a traditional Reiki technique I greatly expanded with hypnosis) while summarizing the key suggestions already given and possibly including a hypnotic intervention technique as well.

When my hypnosis clients came into the office with a physical complaint,  I would briefly explain Reiki and ask if they want a spot energy treatment. Then even while I was conducting the intake, or later when it is time for formal trance work to begin, I would continue to either do hands-on Reiki or distant healing while also doing the hypnosis. The Reiki would help reduce their pain in and of itself.

If a client fell asleep during the hypnosis session, or I just wanted to make sure that the suggestions were firmly implanted, I would do the Reiki mind-to-mind reprogramming technique that I pioneered. Sometimes I elected to only use this technique instead of a hypnotic induction with certain people–especially those that were highly analytical, very young, or with people who had narcolepsy or were hard of hearing.

HypnoReiki Miracles

In a free hypnosis lecture, a man in the audience wanted me to show how Reiki creates trance. So he volunteered to be my demonstration subject. He had just won a sizable workman’s compensation settlement as a result of permanent injury to his Achilles heel that prevented him from climbing ladders as a roofer. Spending just 5 minutes or so with him doing this mind-to-mind Reiki reprogramming technique with key suggestions one of which was “I release all blocks known and unknown to my full healing now”, enabled him to be able to again walk normally–an amazing healing!!!

Another time after doing a Reiki attunement, I did the Reiki mind-to-mind reprogramming technique to help a woman who was scheduled for biopsy on her breast. I guided her through a visualization to imagine the growth shrinking while giving her positive suggestions. She felt a ‘ping’. Then when she went to the doctor that same day, the lump was gone!

I did this technique with a client that alternated between anorexic and bulimic behavior. The amount of energy flowing through my hands as I was holding her head and neck was so intense that I had to stretch out my arms and stand as far away from her as I could. I could easily tell from the heat which of my hypnotic suggestions or interventions were having deep impact, and which not so much, when to keep them going, and when to move on. This went on for 45 minutes. After that session, her binging and purging, which was several times/day, cut in half. After the fourth session, she was able to go through Thanksgiving with her family (a challenge to be sure) absolutely fine with no such behavior! 

At another time, I had a 4 year old brought to me because on chronic ear infections. Again, I chose the Reiki mind-to-mind reprogramming technique with suggestions of various options for her to be able to reduce or shut out what she was hearing that she didn’t want to hear, which were family arguments. These options, such as walking out of the room, telling others to be quiet or shut up, putting her hands over her ears, would still allow her the ability to hear what she did want to hear. I impressed upon her how important it was to have good hearing so that she could hear “I love you” , nice music, birds singing, and other wonderful things and sounds. Her mother told me that before they reached the car after the session, the child’s ears started draining, and there were no more infections after that.

With another client, I did the mind-to-mind communication technique for the purpose of soul retrieval. This woman had experienced a lot of trauma during her lifetime. After the session, her previous narrow face had visibly broadened and her color was much improved.  Other positive benefits were noted at the time.

Make a powerful, healing difference!

While I am not claiming that such miracles occurred with everyone, it is incredible it happened with anyone. You can never know when what you say or do is precisely what someone needs that allows them to heal, to shift, to throw off the weight of trauma or injury. Words can have a profound impact, so it is important to learn how to use them to do so in the most healing way.

Telepathic communication is an important part of healing work.

The unspoken thoughts and images, expectations and beliefs, whether positive or negative, supportive or not, that a therapist, physician, teacher, parent, spouse, or any person in a position of authority, influence and/or rapport has about a person has a powerful effect for good or ill. Hypnotherapists regularly undo the effects that negative suggestion has had on their clients. Reiki practitioners and healers of other stripes likewise need to learn how to do this also. But all need to telepathically transmit positive beliefs and expectations to their clients. You can learn how to deliberately make a powerful difference with Reiki distant healing combined with images, and the Reiki reprogramming technique.

And by the way, if you do not believe your client can improve, you must, in all fairness to them, refer them out!

Language and suggestion can heal or kill.

This is the subject of the placebo or nocebo response in medicine. It is not enough to have good intentions. Reiki practitioners and bodyworkers of all kinds need to learn the basics of hypnotic languaging because energy work creates hypnotic trance. This means that anything you say or that they hear while you are working on them and shortly thereafter while they are still super relaxed is taken in much as if it were hypnotically delivered. You can do great good or harm. My books can teach you to only say things in a way that is helpful.

Reiki can telepathically help someone mentally and emotionally.

You can send helpful suggestions or guide your clients through a hypnotic or NLP intervention, such as Time Line Therapy, telepathically. I did this sometimes when a client could not come in personally but was under duress. And there were other times that a session did not allow enough time to deal with an issue or a piece of it as thoroughly as I would have liked. Being able to reach them telepathically allowed me to tie up those loose ends. This technique consists of sending Reiki distant healing along with Reiki mental/emotional healing and adding hypnotic suggestions, visualizations or interventions. Sometimes, within minutes, they would call me back and report a complete positive shift in attitude!

Reiki induces trance, so it is important to learn basic hypnotic principles and formulation of suggestions to insure that no harm is inadvertently done through casual speech. The mental reprogramming technique is so powerful that whatever is the practitioner’s mind goes directly into the client’s unconscious. Therefore, it is imperative that the Reiki practitioner understands proper hypnotic languaging, respects the client’s wishes, and has a great deal of integrity. Therefore, not everyone can or should learn these advanced techniques.

As you are gathering, there is more to Reiki than either hands-on energy work or straight distant healing. There is hands-on work combined with suggestion/and or visualization. There is mind-to-mind reprogramming you can do on yourself, or on another person. There is distant healing combined with telepathically communicated suggestions, visualizations, and/or interventions. There is a drawing exercise with distant healing as well. All three volumes of my Reiki books instruct you in several ways in which integrate the two modalities effectively.  These advanced Reiki techniques, which I either originated or greatly expanded previously known Mikao Usui Reiki methods, are outlined so you can do them yourself.

Hypnosis for Cancer (and other) Patients

Make a Powerful Healing Difference!

Most major diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, come about after a long period of stress, bad habits, unbalanced lifestyle, overall abuse or neglect of one’s health or needs. Fixing it then is not as simple as undergoing surgery, a particular medical treatment or drug protocol even if those are indicated. It also requires addressing what weakened or overloaded the system in the first place. 

Dealing with stress, both current stressors and past unresolved issues, is always indicated because it is stress that robs vital energy needed for the body’s defense and healthy cell regeneration and repair. 

Hypnotherapists are ideal in helping cancer as well as many other types of patients because we already are experts in many of the factors important for a well rounded treatment protocol.

  • We create hypnoanesthesia for childbirth, surgery, dentistry as well as trauma situations
  • We reduce stress that interferes with the body’s natural defenses.
  • We help heal emotional trauma that may have weakened the system.
  • We enhance relaxation that eases all types of pain (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual), and brings about much needed rest.
  • We utilize positive suggestions to maximize the Placebo Effect.
  • We create and then collapse negative anchors to undo the Nocebo Effect and negative self-fulfilling prophesy.
  • We utilize healing visualizations to assist the body to heal.
  • We empower the client by teaching him multiple self-help tools such as self-hypnosis, stress and anger management, pain management, self-guided visualizations.
  • We install desired, helpful habits, and increase a client’s motivation for practicing them: healthy eating, detoxification, regular exercise, work and sleep habits.
  • We help the client to eliminate unwanted, detrimental behaviors such as smoking or bad eating habits.
  • We help to improve attitude.
  • We help heal relationships.
  • We improve sleep.
  • We teach goal setting and staying focused on any helpful routine including treatment protocols.
  • We assist in problem solving for anything that comes up.
  • We assist the client contacting and working with the healer within that may already know what has to happen in order to heal.

But most importantly, hypnotherapists help clients to 

  • get in touch with their inner core to find the part of their life that is out of balance and draining their life force, and then addressing it, 
  • and to find and fulfill the unmet needs the soul requires to demonstrate good health.
  • If you fire up the spirit, the soul of the person, it can mobilize the system and fire up the body to do what it already knows to do to heal.

In addition to any indicated medical treatment, for healing to occur

  • there has to be a big enough reason to heal, 
  • the energy drains on the system (toxins, overwork, stress and internal conflicts) have to be cleared away,
  • and more energy needs to come in not just with sleep, good nutrition, but also through loving relationships, meaning, purpose and joy.

During a workshop on this topic at the National Guild of Hypnotists, I taught hypnotherapists multiple ways of becoming a powerful asset in their client’s healing journey whether with cancer patients or those with other serious health issues.

TRADITIONAL USE OF HYPNOTHERAPY FOR CANCER, etc.

Hypnosis has traditionally been used as adjunctive therapy to allopathic medicine. As such, it did the following:

  • reduction of symptoms caused by the illness directly
  • reduction of symptoms caused by the treatment, such as hair loss, nausea from chemotherapy/radiation, and by any medication
  • fear of diagnostic tests, surgery and/or treatment
  • motivation to follow the medical treatment protocol
  • motivation to follow any other physician recommendations, such as follow thru with dietary changes, physical therapy, etc.
  • hypnosis for anesthesia, and speedy post-operative recovery
  • visualization for healing
  • elimination of health destructive habits such as smoking (cancer), or anger outbursts (as in high blood pressure)

EXPANDED USE OF HYPNOTHERAPY

The expanded use of hypnosis includes all of the above plus a very wholistic look at the entire life of the patient to bring harmony and balance conducive to good health. This includes:

  • undoing the Nocebo Effect—the impact that fear, hopelessness and self-fulfilling prophecy has had or could still have from hearing the diagnosis of their condition and the likely prognosis that the illness will take. The negative suggestions/expectations may have come from the medical staff, but also support groups, friends/family or even online.
  • locating and resolving the major drivers for the disease — the main mental/emotional stressors that have weakened the system.

This understands that while anything that stops energy leaking out of the body’s system, and reduces stress, including long buried issues, frees up energy for the body to heal, there needs to be a deliberate search for and healing of those specifically related events, beliefs, judgments and decisions.

  • addressing the energy equation.

Illness results when more energy demands are placed on a body than it has the reserves to cover.

Anything that  stops energy from leaking out maintains critical energy reserves. 

Anything that brings more energy into the system makes more energy available for the body to do what it already knows how to do in order to heal.

  • motivating the client to investigate, inaugurate on a can’t hurt basis, and maintain a common sense approach to good self-care in addition to what was advocated by the client’s team of medical advisors.

This relates to improving the energy equation, and can include:

  • improving diet, sleep and exercise
  • adding supplements, herbs, homeopathic, aromatherapy, or other
  • various healing modalities for overall wellness not directly tied to healing the specific illness (massage and other bodywork, energy work, chiropractics, etc.)
  • eliminating counter productive habits that go beyond smoking or overeating, but include non-beneficial mental and emotional habits as well
  • reducing toxicity
  • addressing the spiritual dimension

This will include connecting to that something More beyond the body and the self. It could include a connection to what people call God, but could also be a connection to family, community, nature, humanity as a whole.

It also looks to whether the client has a sense of meaning, value and purpose in his life. If, for example,  the client perceives life as meaningless and unfulfilling, why heal? This relates to strengthening the “life urge”, the will to live. But it goes beyond just the ego’s drive to survive to something more, to fulfilling some important purpose or goal, such as raising a child.

  • accessing internal wisdom to locate and heal what’s out of balance in the person’s life

This may include visualizations that personify and work with the “healer within”, Gestalt dialog, or just internal questioning and affirmations as with the Infinite Intelligence Process (“There is a part of me that knows ___ and is ___ so now”).

  • looking for the message/lesson/opportunity/blessing hidden within the disease

Because physical illness is sometimes driven by the soul to heal a soul issue, the faster the learning occurs, the quicker the need for that illness is resolved. Physical healing can then (but not always) follow. Carolyn Myss talks about this.

  • amplifying the client’s inner wisdom in making the right decisions for himself
  • increasing joy and overall fulfillment in life

If a person loses his will or desire to live, the body soon follows. In order to heal, there has to be a reason or desire to do so that goes beyond just get out of unpleasant symptoms or physical pain. This may mean helping the client to find and follow his life’s purpose. It may mean making radical changes in his life. Why get better if it means going back to a life or situation that is intolerable?

  • improving primary relationships
  • improving balance in life
  • dealing with any other stressors including the stress caused from being sick, the financial worries, the practical problems of not being as capable and self-sufficient as before.
  • teaching any self-help skills, particularly stress management tools (self-hypnosis, EFT, Emotion Code, Infinite Intelligence Process, etc.) , that you know and which might well help the client whether or not they are strictly ‘hypnosis’
  • utilizing any other modalities that you know (such as energy healing) and which might well help the client whether or not they are strictly ‘hypnosis’ as long as the client approves.
  • changing both the internal and external environment of the cells – this includes the mental and emotional environment as well as physical and spiritual. For Hypnotherapists, changing the environment starts with helping the client to change his perception of the environment because as Biologist Dr. Bruce Lipton says, perception creates chemistry. 

This may be as basic as healing one’s perception that they are living in a hostile environment. Fear is the big issue to address. Fear mobilizes the body for fight or flight. Only love, feeling safe, being at peace enables the body to move into growth and healing.

Physicians may offer drugs to change the cells chemistry, and diet, herbs, supplements, aromatherapy and homeopathic remedies also do so. But thoughts and emotions also change internal chemistry, and sometimes faster.

  • empowering the client to make informed decisions about his own treatment.

Hypnotherapist and long time Director of Health, Education, AIDS Liason, Michael Ellner says that patients who are actively involved in making their own decisions about their treatment do better. This may be motivating the client to investigate other treatment options for the disease, whether still within the allopathic model or not. These other treatment options may be in addition to or instead of traditional allopathic treatment.

  • restoring hope and eliminating the feeling of powerlessness and being a victim of disease
  • making the client aware of his resources and his ability to respond constructively to the health challenge

The goal is to empower the client to bring his body, mind, spirit and his life back into balance and harmony that will support good heath.

Stopping the Downward Spiral of Emotions

As you notice your thoughts, you can predict their emotional outcome, and deliberately shift them to get to a more desirable emotional end result.

Thought substitution is an easy way to do this because you cannot think of two things at once.

This is never to deny your feelings or thoughts as denial leads to more problems. But rather it is to recognize that holding or dwelling on some thoughts or emotional states is counter productive and you pay a price for that. Making wise decisions so that you can take the most constructive, effective action requires being able to think clearly.

Emotional control starts with thought stopping and switching.

Furthermore, it is recognition that many thoughts, beliefs and judgments are based on faulty interpretations or world view that hinder you from overcoming challenges or achieving your goals. Such counterproductive thoughts or judgments may have been absorbed or adopted by you years ago without being examined consciously as an adult. Are they really accurate assessments of what is real or possible? Shift them as necessary.

Here are simple ways to shift

1. Shift to a question.

If the thought is “I can’t, I mustn’t, it’ll never work”. Change it to a question of the opposite: “what if I could, what if I can, what if it could work?” All will stimulate your thinking to look for solution, possibilities.

2. Shift emotion by decision.

If you have a bad experience, you could make a decision that it is going to work for your positive advantage even though you cannot possibly know if that will be the case. This decision will stimulate you to look for and possibly find constructive ways to turn that situation around.

“I turn this to my positive advantage.” or “I make this work for me.”

3: Affirm inner resources to solve problems.

If you are feeling stressed, you could affirm that there is greater wisdom, creativity and strength within you that knows how to solve problems and handle whatever you have to do. Then affirm that these inner resources can be harnessed to do so. The truth is that you cannot know the true limits of your inner resources so why not affirm that there is more ability within you? Why not think that you are capable of rising to the occasion and overcoming problems and achieving goals? This can have the immediate effect of calming you down and moving forward.

fullsizeoutput_2c I do this through what I call The Infinite Intelligence Process, which is fully explained in my book, Accessing More – Tapping Into the Eternal, Unlimited Self with the Infinite Intelligence Process. Below is a sample wording:

“There is a part of my being that knows how to handle this with grace and ease, and is doing so now,” or “there is a part of my being that can resolve this issue, and I am being guided to what I need to do and how to proceed,” or “there is a part of my being that knows who can help me with this, and I am being directed now.” 

4: Challenge negative authoriity figures.

If someone else says that you can’t do something, that it will never work, you can challenge their authority to know. In your mind, negate the value of their opinion. The truth is that when someone offers their opinion, even their educated opinion, it is only from what they have studied, what they have experienced, and does not include what they have not studied or experienced.

For example, medical doctors are experts in drugs and surgery, but not in nutrition, energy work or the healing power of prayer, stress management, forgiveness and loving relationships–all of which have a powerful ability to heal. Even within any given profession, the experts frequently disagree. This is why we are advised to seek a second or third medical opinion. Same thing goes for all other experts as well.

Before you accept the opinion of others, determine how knowledgable and experienced that opinion really is on the given topic. Within every profession there are those that find solutions to problems that their colleagues think are unsolvable. And outside of the profession there are those that sometimes come up with creative solutions that work. Why not let that creative problem solver be you?

“What does he know?”or “That’s what he thinks. He’s not an expert. He only knows ___, not ____.”

Or “if there was another way to go about this, what might that be? How can I look at this situation differently?”

Affirm that you are going to find a solution to any important issue.

“I find a way to make it work, I find the answers I need, etc.”

When you are clear about what you want, when you are determined to achieve your goal, you harness both internal resources and external assistance to do so. This gives success your best shot.

5: Focus on what you can do or what you need to do right now.

“What can I do right now to help this situation?”

Write a list and sort out priorities.

“What is the most important thing I need to focus upon?” “What is the first thing I need to do?”

6: Use affirmations and counter thoughts

Repeat any helpful suggestion or counter thought in your mind over and over to blot out the negative thoughts that prevent you from solving the problem.

7. Walking Mantras

Walking Mantras are positive counter thoughts or affirmation in the form of a little jingle that you repeat rhymically to match to steady movements such a walking steps. I list a great many more in my self-hypnosis book, Your Unlimited Potential, along with an entire chapter on stress management, but here are some:

I find a way that works for me.

Sooner or later I figure it out. 

I learn and move on.

I get everything done on time.

8. Singing

After you have done what you can and your thoughts are still run-a-way negative, you can perhaps shift with singing a song, preferably a happy tune or inspirational one. Or just listen to music. Dancing also helps. They interrupt the pattern and instantly shift mood.

9. Jokes

Tell a joke or ask someone to tell you one, and then quickly retell to others. The humor will release internal tensions, and shift your mood quickly. I did this when I was going through a divorce. It helped a great deal. See another blog article, Using Humor to Defuse Anger! 

10. Exercise

Physical work or exercise gets tension out of the body. Because you also have to pay some attention to what you are doing, it takes away from negative ruminations.

11. Concentrate on anything else

Do anything that requires complete concentration.
