Integrating Hypnosis & Reiki

Mikao-Usui-2How can integrating Reiki with Hypnosis be a great help to both Hypnotherapists and Reiki Practitioners?

Have you ever had a client who fell asleep during hypnosis and didn’t hear a word you said?

  • Want a quick technique that causes instant trance?
  • Gets the suggestions quickly implanted deep into the unconscious mind?
  • Works regardless of whether the client fell asleep or is only in a shallow level of trance or none at all so that the suggestions work anywayeven on
    • infants,
    • children,
    • elderly,
    • people with narcolepsy or a
    • low attention span,
    • those under anesthesia or
    • in a coma, and
    • even those who don’t speak your language?
    • And can even be used for animal communication?
  • Would you like a technique that works beautifully with the
    • highly analytical,
    • “unhypnotizable” or
    • difficult client?
  • Would you like an additional tool that relaxes even the most difficult, stressed person?
  • Do you want something more to
    • enhance healing,
    • build stamina, and
    • reduce or remove headaches,
    • muscle spasms, cramps, and
    • other pain with your clients?
  • Want powerful techniques to heal the
    • inner child,
    • past traumas,
    • painful relationships and more,
    • some that are even content free?
  • Want a powerful way to do
    • soul retrieval,
    • soul integration?
  • And would you like an additional business that is compatible with
    • hypnosis,
    • pain management,
    • stress management,
    • past life regression,
    • shamanic work, bodywork,
    • counseling, or
    • animal healing?

You can do more to help your clients through the power of positive suggestion and visualization in the same bodywork session?

  • Reiki can be used to do powerful, emotional release work on yourself and others!
  • Replace negative thinking with positive mental reprogramming!
  • Release blocks or reasons for self-destructive habits and behavior!
  • Get rid of negative beliefs or judgments!
  • Instill positive new beliefs and habits!

Reiki is sometimes preferable and more powerful than straight hypnosis.

But together they create powerful synergistic effect on all levels of body, mind and spirit. Reiki can be done on yourself or others. All life forms benefit.

Even before adding hypnotic languaging, visualizations or interventions, Reiki significantly

  • speeds up healing,
  • reduces or eliminates pain,
  • stress,
  • detoxifies the system,
  • increases circulation,
  • stamina,
  • improves digestion
  • and sleep,
  • calms the nerves and
  • mental chatter, and
  • improves overall well-being.

Some problems just seem to melt away without discussion or intervention. Colds and flu became nonexistent for me several years following my first Reiki class in 1990. But combining the two modalities make an unbeatable healing tool.

Self use of Reiki and hypnosis has

  • saved my life more than once and has
  • severely reduced the negative consequences of accidents, illness and other challenges.

It has made a

  • profound difference in my personal growth,
  • emotional healing, and has
  • deepened my spiritual life.

 Reiki–Path to Transformation – 3 volumes

These books were originally written in 1992 and revised continually since. The latest version is 2017. They are still current and important as they bring the best of both modalities together in a powerful, easy to understand and practice way.

I was the first to teach HypnoReiki!

Putting the two modalities together as early as 1990, and writing about it soon after, certifying people across India in HypnoReiki, and teaching how to integrate hypnosis and Reiki across the United States at multiple national hypnosis conferences and also throughout India since 1992, I believe I was the first to partner these two modalities! However, I did not trademark the name, and another person came along and did so.

Integrating Reiki with Hypnosis

Learning Reiki in 1990 while operating a hypnosis practice, I immediately started integrating it into my work with hypnosis clients more and more. When a Reiki client came for hands-on-treatment, I would use only an abbreviated hypnotic induction or none at all because the Reiki energy itself creates a hypnotic state. I then followed with offering helpful hypnotic suggestions and visualizations appropriate for them as I was working on the body. Then after the hands-on-work was done, I might have them sit in a chair, do the Reiki mind-to-mind reprogramming technique (a traditional Reiki technique I greatly expanded with hypnosis) while summarizing the key suggestions already given and possibly including a hypnotic intervention technique as well.

When my hypnosis clients came into the office with a physical complaint,  I would briefly explain Reiki and ask if they want a spot energy treatment. Then even while I was conducting the intake, or later when it is time for formal trance work to begin, I would continue to either do hands-on Reiki or distant healing while also doing the hypnosis. The Reiki would help reduce their pain in and of itself.

If a client fell asleep during the hypnosis session, or I just wanted to make sure that the suggestions were firmly implanted, I would do the Reiki mind-to-mind reprogramming technique that I pioneered. Sometimes I elected to only use this technique instead of a hypnotic induction with certain people–especially those that were highly analytical, very young, or with people who had narcolepsy or were hard of hearing.

HypnoReiki Miracles

In a free hypnosis lecture, a man in the audience wanted me to show how Reiki creates trance. So he volunteered to be my demonstration subject. He had just won a sizable workman’s compensation settlement as a result of permanent injury to his Achilles heel that prevented him from climbing ladders as a roofer. Spending just 5 minutes or so with him doing this mind-to-mind Reiki reprogramming technique with key suggestions one of which was “I release all blocks known and unknown to my full healing now”, enabled him to be able to again walk normally–an amazing healing!!!

Another time after doing a Reiki attunement, I did the Reiki mind-to-mind reprogramming technique to help a woman who was scheduled for biopsy on her breast. I guided her through a visualization to imagine the growth shrinking while giving her positive suggestions. She felt a ‘ping’. Then when she went to the doctor that same day, the lump was gone!

I did this technique with a client that alternated between anorexic and bulimic behavior. The amount of energy flowing through my hands as I was holding her head and neck was so intense that I had to stretch out my arms and stand as far away from her as I could. I could easily tell from the heat which of my hypnotic suggestions or interventions were having deep impact, and which not so much, when to keep them going, and when to move on. This went on for 45 minutes. After that session, her binging and purging, which was several times/day, cut in half. After the fourth session, she was able to go through Thanksgiving with her family (a challenge to be sure) absolutely fine with no such behavior!

At another time, I had a 4 year old brought to me because on chronic ear infections. Again, I chose the Reiki mind-to-mind reprogramming technique with suggestions of various options for her to be able to reduce or shut out what she was hearing that she didn’t want to hear, which were family arguments. These options, such as walking out of the room, telling others to be quiet or shut up, putting her hands over her ears, would still allow her the ability to hear what she did want to hear. I impressed upon her how important it was to have good hearing so that she could hear “I love you” , nice music, birds singing, and other wonderful things and sounds. Her mother told me that before they reached the car after the session, the child’s ears started draining, and there were no more infections after that.

With another client, I did the mind-to-mind communication technique for the purpose of soul retrieval. This woman had experienced a lot of trauma during her lifetime. After the session, her previous narrow face had visibly broadened and her color was much improved.  Other positive benefits were noted at the time.

Make a powerful, healing difference!

While I am not claiming that such miracles occurred with everyone, it is incredible it happened with anyone. You can never know when what you say or do is precisely what someone needs that allows them to heal, to shift, to throw off the weight of trauma or injury. Words can have a profound impact, so it is important to learn how to use them to do so in the most healing way.

Telepathic communication is an important part of healing work.

The unspoken thoughts and images, expectations and beliefs, whether positive or negative, supportive or not, that a therapist, physician, teacher, parent, spouse, or any person in a position of authority, influence and/or rapport has about a person has a powerful effect for good or ill. Hypnotherapists regularly undo the effects that negative suggestion has had on their clients. Reiki practitioners and healers of other stripes likewise need to learn how to do this also. But all need to telepathically transmit positive beliefs and expectations to their clients. You can learn how to deliberately make a powerful difference with Reiki distant healing combined with images, and the Reiki reprogramming technique.

And by the way, if you do not believe your client can improve, you must, in all fairness to them, refer them out!

Language and suggestion can heal or kill.

This is the subject of the placebo or nocebo response in medicine. It is not enough to have good intentions. Reiki practitioners and bodyworkers of all kinds need to learn the basics of hypnotic languaging because energy work creates hypnotic trance. This means that anything you say or that they hear while you are working on them and shortly thereafter while they are still super relaxed is taken in much as if it were hypnotically delivered. You can do great good or harm. My books can teach you to only say things in a way that is helpful.

Reiki can telepathically help someone mentally and emotionally.

You can send helpful suggestions or guide your clients through a hypnotic or NLP intervention, such as Time Line Therapy, telepathically. I did this sometimes when a client could not come in personally but was under duress. And there were other times that a session did not allow enough time to deal with an issue or a piece of it as thoroughly as I would have liked. Being able to reach them telepathically allowed me to tie up those loose ends. This technique consists of sending Reiki distant healing along with Reiki mental/emotional healing and adding hypnotic suggestions, visualizations or interventions. Sometimes, within minutes, they would call me back and report a complete positive shift in attitude!

Reiki induces trance, so it is important to learn basic hypnotic principles and formulation of suggestions to insure that no harm is inadvertently done through casual speech. The mental reprogramming technique is so powerful that whatever is the practitioner’s mind goes directly into the client’s unconscious. Therefore, it is imperative that the Reiki practitioner understands proper hypnotic languaging, respects the client’s wishes, and has a great deal of integrity. Therefore, not everyone can or should learn these advanced techniques.

As you are gathering, there is more to Reiki than either hands-on energy work or straight distant healing. There is hands-on work combined with suggestion/and or visualization. There is mind-to-mind reprogramming you can do on yourself, or on another person. There is distant healing combined with telepathically communicated suggestions, visualizations, and/or interventions. There is a drawing exercise with distant healing as well. All three volumes of my Reiki books instruct you in several ways in which integrate the two modalities effectively.  These advanced Reiki techniques, which I either originated or greatly expanded previously known Mikao Usui Reiki methods, are outlined so you can do them yourself.

Weight Loss Facts Everyone Should Know

  • Are you confused by conflicting weight loss programs?

  • Have you tried all the diets that instead of reducing your bottom adds only to the bottom line of the weight-loss gurus and manufacturers of the products that they hawk?

  • Have weight loss programs been too rigid or stressful–too much work for too little return?

There is no clear consensus among experts. Worse yet, they may offer opposite advice–eat mostly fruit and vegetables and grains, which are carbs, versus eat very little (Low Carbohydrate Diet), eat a low fat, low protein diet versus eat a high protein/fat one (Atkins), eat a high fat, low carbs (Keto), follow intermittent fasting, or….

Is the confusion making you crazy? Surely, if the experts disagree, how do figure out what is going to work for you even if some programs work for some people, some of the time?

#1. No one dietary or exercise program works for all.

Eat for your body type?

The evidence is that no one program works for everyone although there are various good ones that work for many. Body or blood typing may be a reason why. Ayurvedic Medicine brought to Western attention by Deepak Chopra in Perfect Health says that there are ten possible body types, each that require its own dietary plan and exercise program for maximum health and weight loss. Ayurveda determines the body type by a constellation of personality traits, and this can be obtained by a self-scoring questionnaire.

Eat for Your Blood Type?

But Dr. Peter D’Adamo in Eat Right for Your Type claims that blood type (O, A, B and AB) is what determines which dietary and exercise plan is necessary. He argues that our ancestors adapted over eons by eating their own specific diets. This adaptation to or lack of exposure to specific foods is what determines which are digestible or not, act like medicine or poison to the body, speed up or slow down the metabolism, compromise or assist in the production of insulin, create or upset or hormonal balance, and promote health or create problems such as water retention, thyroid disorders, ulcers, and more. In other words, by eating the foods that are right for your type, you improve your overall heath, of which one side benefit is weight loss.

#2. When you eat the foods that are right for you, for whatever reason makes it right, not only do you feel better, but that good feeling translates into being more active and, consequently, trimmer and healthier.

#3. Weight loss is a do-it-yourself project.

With so many vastly different approaches, I believe that each person must do his own research, prudent self-experimentation on a “canʼt hurt” basis, and observe the results. Start with the obvious. Use your common sense! Let improvement in overall health and vitality be your guide.

#4. Start with the obvious & go on from there.

Ed Victor, author of The Obvious Diet, claims that most people already know why they are fat and what they need to do about it. He advises that each person come up with his own program rather than follow someone elseʼs because the rules you make up yourself are the ones you are more likely to stick to. Can you think of one thing which if you did on a regular difference would make a positive difference for you?

#5. Weight loss is first and foremost about improving overall health.

Weight loss and management is about loving and honoring yourself and reflecting that in how you take care of yourself. It is a side effect of greater health, and requires establishing a lifestyle of good eating, exercise and lifestyle habits (including adequate sleep, fun, and stress reduction) that are maintained long-term most of the time. Amplify every system of the body so that it is functionally optimally.

#6. Enhance Digestion

Live foods, enzymes, herbs and spices assist digestion. What doesn’t get digested, doesn’t get absorbed. This leads to cravings.

Consider food combinations.

Harvey Diamond in Fit for Life is claims that foods that utilize incompatible enzymes for digestion (i.e., fruits and anything else, or meat and starch) end up putrefying in your body, causing improper absorption of nutrients, fatigue and toxicity leading to disease and weight gain.

The Role of Elimination, Circulation, Respiration, Lymphatic System, & Muscles

Improve elimination with drinking lots of water, and, possibly doing a colon, liver, or gall bladder cleanse. Enhance circulation with exercise, dietary changes, herbs, or specific therapies. Enhance respiration with deep breathing, laughter, vigorous movement, and increased oxygen. Oxygen burns fat, reduces stress, and raises endorphins (your bodyʼs natural pain killers and feel-good chemicals). Build muscle because muscle burns fat. Enhance the lymph system with exercise or lymph drainage massage. Most importantly, get the toxins out of your body.

#7. Toxicity is a major consideration

Kevin Trudeau in his updated Natural Cures “They” Donʼt Want You to Know About says that most fat people have

  • low metabolism caused by problems with the thyroid, pancreas, liver, stomach, small and large intestines, or colon
  • under active thyroid, which can be caused by fluoride
  • improper functioning pancreas, which can be caused by food additives, and refined sugar and white flour
  • clogged and sluggish liver, which can be caused by medications, cholesterol reducing drugs, chloride, fluoride, food additives, refined sugar and white flour, artificial sweeteners, monosodium glutamate (MSG), and preservatives
  • sluggish digestive system, which can be caused by insufficient digestive enzymes possibly from food additives, candida yeast overgrowth, or toxicity
  • toxicity caused by medications, chemical residues in food, food additives, chlorine, fluoride, and insufficient exercise
  • hormonal imbalances, which can be caused by toxicity or lack of walking, and are highly toxic in general. (Toxicity causes you to retain water and increase fat storage.)
  • large appetite caused by improper assimilation of food from inadequate digestive enzymes, candida yeast overgrowth, or food additives
  • eat when they are not hungry because of habit, stress, emotional eating, or physiological food cravings. (Physiological food cravings can be caused by toxins or candida yeast overgrowth.)
  • eat larger portions than thin people because of larger appetite, inability to assimilate nutrients, physiological cravings, emotional issues, stress, and habit
  • consume more “Diet Food”, which are loaded with artificial sweeteners, sugar or chemical additives that make you fat and are addictive.
  • eat shortly before bed. (Late eaten food is turned into fat storage instead of metabolized.)
  • are adversely affected by growth hormones in meat and dairy products
  • think of themselves as fat–a self-fulfilling prophecy.

#8. Parasites, hypoglycemia, and allergies also cause cravings and overweight.

Two- thirds of all obese people have a sugar addiction characterized by craving for sugar.

#9. If you crave it, you are either allergic or missing some vital nutrient contained in that food!

People with a sugar addiction are conditioned to burn sugar not fat for energy. After the addiction is gone, the insulin level stabilizes and the person begins to burn fat instead. The sweetness in both sweetened and artificially sweetened drinks and foods tend to stimulate the appetite. People who consume them gain more weight than those who donʼt.

However, if you are craving a healthy food such as spinach, butternut squash, or fish, you may need the nutrients in that food.

Here is the test:

Do you feel better or worse one hour after eating that craved food? If you have more energy and are thinking more clearly, then it was needed. But if you are tired, sluggish, then you should limit or avoid that food in future.

#10. People overeat because they donʼt feel good.

Anything, physical or emotional, that causes you to not feel good, can cause weight gain, either directly, or because it creates a disinclination for physical activity, and a tendency to reach for fattening foods. Unfortunately, when you donʼt feel good, you may gravitate to alcohol or the quick-fix energy of fat, sugar, white flour, and caffeine. A weight loss program needs to address not just what and how but also why you eat.

#11. Anything that causes stress can trigger overeating. Anger and guilt head the list.

Even with the possible physical causes, most people are fat because of emotional eating and stress. Eating can be an addiction, and most people who are overweight by 50 pounds have a real psychological need that food is providing. Stress management and healing emotional wounds should be included in any comprehensive weight loss program. Unless you deal with the emotional or psychological reasons why you eat, any victories against the scale will be temporary.

#12. Donʼt blame your genes!

It is your eating, exercise and lifestyle habits, and stress – not your genes – that make you fat. While some people are born with a slower metabolism, learned behavior is more important than genealogy in obesity. What food habits were you taught? Did your family use food to reward or to show love, or to avoid confrontation and intimacy? Did your family use food to fill an emotional void, to comfort, to dull pain or boredom? Using food to satisfy emotional needs can get you into big trouble. Identifying with fat friends or relatives can also cause unconscious behaviors that duplicate their weighty results.

#13. Low calorie or highly restricted diets backfire!

The best way to gain weight is to go on low calorie diet! What your body loses is not fat but lean muscle tissue and water. Long term, low calorie diets are a form of starvation. Your body knows this, and becomes a very efficient fat-conservation machine in response. Low calorie diets and long term fasting can lead to a large insulin reaction that can block fat from leaving. It slows metabolism down dramatically to between 25-40%. This slower metabolism continues until up to a year after you have regained all the previously lost weight. After several weeks of a formula diet when you start eating again, your body may absorb fat by 300-400% above normal.

The more you diet, the heavier you get.

If you have been on many diets, your metabolism may never readjust unless you undertake a vigorous exercise program. Exercise is the best way to speed up the metabolism, but hypnotic or auto suggestions also work, as do certain herbs. Whereas, artificial sweeteners or corn syrup and certain foods can slow down metabolism.

#14. Allow for some amount of “cheating”.

A long-term weight loss program should be flexible enough to include some occasional or small deviations from your program. For example, a small portion of whatever you want on an occasional basis so that you donʼt feel deprived and self-sabotage. Instead of buying a bag of cookies and then being tempted to eat through it in just a few days, buy one when you are out for your weekly shopping. Perhaps you want to save that special treat when you go out with others. For example, share a desert. The important thing is cheat outside of the house, and not to bring home those snack items that you would devour in no time.

#15. Start with Food Substitution

While it is common sense to lower the overall calorie consumption, it may not be necessary to reduce the overall volume of food (you can eat a lot of watermelon and lose weight). Food substitution is an easy way to start making changes without starving yourself.

What works for many people is to substitute fresh fruits and vegetables and lots of water, herbal tea, soup for anything that would cause you to binge. Increase the portions of non-processed fruit and vegetables and reduce the portions of fatty meat, cheese, etc. And most importantly, substitute food made from scratch from non-GMO foods for anything that is processed.

16. Make it easy or you won’t keep it going.

If your food plan is not easy, you won’t make it a lifelong practice. Make sure that you have quality food that you can grab readily available in the house, or when you go out if you go past mealtime. One way to do this is to cook your dinner in bulk, package some for tomorrow’s lunch, and freeze additional portions. Then you have only to move out of the freezer (or move down to the main part of the fridge) a few hours before to defrost for a quick meal. Avoid microwaving to do this as microwaved food also is toxic.

16. Pay now for good quality food or pay doctors later for poor health.

Substitute food that is organic from food that is not.  Almost all corn and soy is GMO (genetically modified), but the list of GMO foods is growing. Do some research. GMO foods are toxic because your body does not know how to process them, and toxicity is linked to weight gain. High fructose corn syrup, aspartame, and MSG (now known by many other names–google) is known to cause weight gain, so avoid it completely. Read the labels.

17. Exercise is important, but not all exercise is equal.

Lean people move more. Sustained, repetitive movements like walking, jogging, cycling, and running burn fat. But quick, spurt exercise like baseball and basketball burn carbohydrates. The earlier in the day that you exercise, the greater your overall resting metabolic rate for the rest of the day. There is a 40-60% increase in fat burn if you exercise in the morning as opposed to the afternoon or evening.

18. Deal with what’s eating you.

This is where I come in as I specialize in helping people resolve mental and emotional issues, and then teaching them how to do it for themselves. There are lots of simple stress management tools and techniques that are easy to learn and quick to do. These include self-hypnosis, the Emotional Freedom Technique, Glass of Water Technique, Walking Mantras (both outlined in my book Your Unlimited Potential, a complete self-hypnosis course), affirmations, the Infinite Intelligence Process (as outlined in my book Accessing More — Tapping into the Eternal, Unlimited Self with the Infinite Intelligence Process), and a host of other strategies outllined in another book of mine, Releasing Anger without Killing Anyone.

19. Stopping smoking need not cause weight gain!

One-third of people who stop smoking lose weight because they feel so much better that they no longer avoid activity. One-third of people who stop smoking stay exactly the same. One-third of people who stop smoking gain an average of 5-6 pounds, which is usually gone in one year as the metabolism readjusts. Only 10% gain as much as 30 pounds. These are people who are simply switching addictions. They are probably eating to fill some psychological need. A good hypnosis stop smoking program can address those needs. Weight gain from quitting can be headed off with a simple plan to exercise, drink more water, and eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and practicing stress management tools.

#20. Create a Support System – in Person and in Meditation

Identify and associate with people who are following healthy routines – eating, exercise, stress management, or lifestyle – and with ethical values you respect. You unconsciously become like the people with whom you associate and identify. While it is important to have a network of support of people you see or talk to on a regular basis, it is possible to gain strength from those you only know of, even role models of people long dead. Put their picture on your fridge, or desktop. In meditation, link your mind with the universal consciousness that allows/allowed them to be healtlhy and strong, and live in a way you admire and respect.

Hypnosis for Cancer (and other) Patients

Make a Powerful Healing Difference!

Most major diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, come about after a long period of stress, bad habits, unbalanced lifestyle, overall abuse or neglect of one’s health or needs. Fixing it then is not as simple as undergoing surgery, a particular medical treatment or drug protocol even if those are indicated. It also requires addressing what weakened or overloaded the system in the first place.

Dealing with stress, both current stressors and past unresolved issues, is always indicated because it is stress that robs vital energy needed for the body’s defense and healthy cell regeneration and repair.

Hypnotherapists are ideal in helping cancer as well as many other types of patients because we already are experts in many of the factors important for a well rounded treatment protocol.

  • We create hypnoanesthesia for childbirth, surgery, dentistry as well as trauma situations
  • We reduce stress that interferes with the body’s natural defenses.
  • We help heal emotional trauma that may have weakened the system.
  • We enhance relaxation that eases all types of pain (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual), and brings about much needed rest.
  • We utilize positive suggestions to maximize the Placebo Effect.
  • We create and then collapse negative anchors to undo the Nocebo Effect and negative self-fulfilling prophesy.
  • We utilize healing visualizations to assist the body to heal.
  • We empower the client by teaching him multiple self-help tools such as self-hypnosis, stress and anger management, pain management, self-guided visualizations.
  • We install desired, helpful habits, and increase a client’s motivation for practicing them: healthy eating, detoxification, regular exercise, work and sleep habits.
  • We help the client to eliminate unwanted, detrimental behaviors such as smoking or bad eating habits.
  • We help to improve attitude.
  • We help heal relationships.
  • We improve sleep.
  • We teach goal setting and staying focused on any helpful routine including treatment protocols.
  • We assist in problem solving for anything that comes up.
  • We assist the client contacting and working with the healer within that may already know what has to happen in order to heal.

But most importantly, hypnotherapists help clients to

  • get in touch with their inner core to find the part of their life that is out of balance and draining their life force, and then addressing it,
  • and to find and fulfill the unmet needs the soul requires to demonstrate good health.
  • If you fire up the spirit, the soul of the person, it can mobilize the system and fire up the body to do what it already knows to do to heal.

In addition to any indicated medical treatment, for healing to occur

  • there has to be a big enough reason to heal,
  • the energy drains on the system (toxins, overwork, stress and internal conflicts) have to be cleared away,
  • and more energy needs to come in not just with sleep, good nutrition, but also through loving relationships, meaning, purpose and joy.

During a workshop on this topic at the National Guild of Hypnotists, I taught hypnotherapists multiple ways of becoming a powerful asset in their client’s healing journey whether with cancer patients or those with other serious health issues.

TRADITIONAL USE OF HYPNOTHERAPY FOR CANCER, etc.

Hypnosis has traditionally been used as adjunctive therapy to allopathic medicine. As such, it did the following:

  • reduction of symptoms caused by the illness directly
  • reduction of symptoms caused by the treatment, such as hair loss, nausea from chemotherapy/radiation, and by any medication
  • fear of diagnostic tests, surgery and/or treatment
  • motivation to follow the medical treatment protocol
  • motivation to follow any other physician recommendations, such as follow thru with dietary changes, physical therapy, etc.
  • hypnosis for anesthesia, and speedy post-operative recovery
  • visualization for healing
  • elimination of health destructive habits such as smoking (cancer), or anger outbursts (as in high blood pressure)

EXPANDED USE OF HYPNOTHERAPY

The expanded use of hypnosis includes all of the above plus a very wholistic look at the entire life of the patient to bring harmony and balance conducive to good health. This includes:

  • undoing the Nocebo Effect—the impact that fear, hopelessness and self-fulfilling prophecy has had or could still have from hearing the diagnosis of their condition and the likely prognosis that the illness will take. The negative suggestions/expectations may have come from the medical staff, but also support groups, friends/family or even online.
  • locating and resolving the major drivers for the disease — the main mental/emotional stressors that have weakened the system.

This understands that while anything that stops energy leaking out of the body’s system, and reduces stress, including long buried issues, frees up energy for the body to heal, there needs to be a deliberate search for and healing of those specifically related events, beliefs, judgments and decisions.

  • addressing the energy equation.

Illness results when more energy demands are placed on a body than it has the reserves to cover.

Anything that  stops energy from leaking out maintains critical energy reserves.

Anything that brings more energy into the system makes more energy available for the body to do what it already knows how to do in order to heal.

  • motivating the client to investigate, inaugurate on a can’t hurt basis, and maintain a common sense approach to good self-care in addition to what was advocated by the client’s team of medical advisors.

This relates to improving the energy equation, and can include:

  • improving diet, sleep and exercise
  • adding supplements, herbs, homeopathic, aromatherapy, or other
  • various healing modalities for overall wellness not directly tied to healing the specific illness (massage and other bodywork, energy work, chiropractics, etc.)
  • eliminating counter productive habits that go beyond smoking or overeating, but include non-beneficial mental and emotional habits as well
  • reducing toxicity
  • addressing the spiritual dimension

This will include connecting to that something More beyond the body and the self. It could include a connection to what people call God, but could also be a connection to family, community, nature, humanity as a whole.

It also looks to whether the client has a sense of meaning, value and purpose in his life. If, for example,  the client perceives life as meaningless and unfulfilling, why heal? This relates to strengthening the “life urge”, the will to live. But it goes beyond just the ego’s drive to survive to something more, to fulfilling some important purpose or goal, such as raising a child.

  • accessing internal wisdom to locate and heal what’s out of balance in the person’s life

This may include visualizations that personify and work with the “healer within”, Gestalt dialog, or just internal questioning and affirmations as with the Infinite Intelligence Process (“There is a part of me that knows ___ and is ___ so now”).

  • looking for the message/lesson/opportunity/blessing hidden within the disease

Because physical illness is sometimes driven by the soul to heal a soul issue, the faster the learning occurs, the quicker the need for that illness is resolved. Physical healing can then (but not always) follow. Carolyn Myss talks about this.

  • amplifying the client’s inner wisdom in making the right decisions for himself
  • increasing joy and overall fulfillment in life

If a person loses his will or desire to live, the body soon follows. In order to heal, there has to be a reason or desire to do so that goes beyond just get out of unpleasant symptoms or physical pain. This may mean helping the client to find and follow his life’s purpose. It may mean making radical changes in his life. Why get better if it means going back to a life or situation that is intolerable?

  • improving primary relationships
  • improving balance in life
  • dealing with any other stressors including the stress caused from being sick, the financial worries, the practical problems of not being as capable and self-sufficient as before.
  • teaching any self-help skills, particularly stress management tools (self-hypnosis, EFT, Emotion Code, Infinite Intelligence Process, etc.) , that you know and which might well help the client whether or not they are strictly ‘hypnosis’
  • utilizing any other modalities that you know (such as energy healing) and which might well help the client whether or not they are strictly ‘hypnosis’ as long as the client approves.
  • changing both the internal and external environment of the cells – this includes the mental and emotional environment as well as physical and spiritual. For Hypnotherapists, changing the environment starts with helping the client to change his perception of the environment because as Biologist Dr. Bruce Lipton says, perception creates chemistry.

This may be as basic as healing one’s perception that they are living in a hostile environment. Fear is the big issue to address. Fear mobilizes the body for fight or flight. Only love, feeling safe, being at peace enables the body to move into growth and healing.

Physicians may offer drugs to change the cells chemistry, and diet, herbs, supplements, aromatherapy and homeopathic remedies also do so. But thoughts and emotions also change internal chemistry, and sometimes faster.

  • empowering the client to make informed decisions about his own treatment.

Hypnotherapist and long time Director of Health, Education, AIDS Liason, Michael Ellner says that patients who are actively involved in making their own decisions about their treatment do better. This may be motivating the client to investigate other treatment options for the disease, whether still within the allopathic model or not. These other treatment options may be in addition to or instead of traditional allopathic treatment.

  • restoring hope and eliminating the feeling of powerlessness and being a victim of disease
  • making the client aware of his resources and his ability to respond constructively to the health challenge

The goal is to empower the client to bring his body, mind, spirit and his life back into balance and harmony that will support good heath.

What the Law of Attraction Misses

This is a reworked article originally written in March 17, 2015 that was formerly called:

“Why Shit Happens (or doesn’t)”

Much talk has been made on the Law of Attraction–that you create your own reality through the predominant content of your thoughts, and that by dwelling on positive or negative thoughts, you will draw positive or negative experiences into your life. Popularized by New Thought authors (see list of authors here), the New Age Movement, channelers such as Esther Hicks, and promoted in movies such as The Secret, it has been so hyped up that it takes on the trappings of religious dogma (Science of Mind, Unity, Christian Science, etc.) or cultish in it’s uncritical, narrow minded philosophy. Followers seem to fall into the category of ‘true believers’.

As a hypnotherapist, I agree that the Law of Attraction does seem to operate. It is my job to help a client identify the self-sabotaging thoughts, emotions and expectations that may underlie any unwanted habit, pattern or experience. And it is my job to help them resolve their issues, healing trauma and other blockages, and shifting limiting beliefs and negative expectations so that the person is able to be more hopeful, take appropriate action, and move on with their life less burdened by the stress of the past in order to create a more rewarding future.

That being said, the Law of Attraction is only a possible cause (not the only possibility) and even where found, may be only a partial cause of why particular things happen to you. While important, it is, nonetheless, simplistic and very incomplete. And in it’s claim that it is the only causative factor, it lacks compassion for self and others, and it neglects the other things that may be responsible totally apart from LOA, or in addition be at cause. In other words, the possibilities are:

  • Law of Attraction.
  • Law of Attraction AND ___.
  • Something else.

If you are blind to other factors that are or may be involved, you cannot, you will not take corrective action on them. That is a disservice.

Furthermore, ideas, beliefs, theories, models of reality change over time. They sometimes are more like the fad of the moment. They come and they go. Consequently, it is a mistake to get too attached or you will miss new insights. If you maintain an open-minded attitude, you may come to a greater understanding of how the mind works in creating our world. And as you examine other points in history or other cultures, other areas of the world where people have a vastly different beliefs, ideas, and experience of life than we do in our more privileged Western society, you may have a more expansive understanding in both our freedom and our limitations in what we can and cannot effect.

But even within the Law of Attraction what is not usually talked about are the thoughts that are the most powerful aspect and the hardest to remedy are those that are so much a part of you that they taken for granted, unspoken, unverbalized, and, therefore, invisible. While your life gives you clues, yet other dynamics beyond your predominant thoughts can be responsible for drawing experiences to you. Hence, the beauty of hypnosis to uncover and release them.

In my first edition of Your Unlimited Potential, a complete self-hypnosis course book first published in 1992 [available through my website], I wrote about this New Thought principle and the others listed below in an entire chapter entitled Laws of Mind. While I am now embarrassed at how much the New Age Movement and New Thought permeates that chapter, New Thought only goes back about a 100 years since  Phineas Quimby. Quimby was a Mesmerist (follower of Franz Mesmer and the early hypnotists) in the early 19th century that healed Mary Baker Eddy, founder of Christian Science. Eddy in turn influenced Ernest Holmes who founded Religious Science (of which Fenwick Holmes, Raymond Charles Barker, Stuart Grayson, Louise Hay, Michael Beckwith, Joseph Murphy, Jean Houston, Terry Cole-Whittaker, and William Hornaday are notable ministers). Eddy also influenced Charles and Ethel Fillmore, founder of Unity Church.

But here’s another take on how we may be creating our reality:

While I believe that all of the above influence what happens to us, I noted that physicist, Tom Campbell has another take on why we draw things to us. He says that

We draw experiences to us as learning opportunities, both individually and collectively.

Tom Campbell on Creating Our Future           tom-atom.png

Campbell, author of My Big Toe, consciousness researcher, out-of-body experiencer, and former associate of Robert Monroe (founder of the Monroe Institute),  says that physical existence is a virtual reality. The future is a yet unrealized array of multiple possibilities of everything that could happen. As to what does happen or is most likely, he says:

If a particular occurrence is determined to be an effective learning opportunity for someone or everyone, the probability of it happening is increased. The system is designed to automatically deliver timely custom-fit individual learning opportunities — the presentation of such opportunities to individuals or groups is part of the feedback one receives relative to the choices one makes. Because the point of the system is to overcome fear (about you – high entropy) and replace it with love (about others – low entropy), if you have fear, the feedback system will manifest that fear in PMR [physical reality] to force you to deal with it (learn) or suffer the consequences.”

If it is your soul’s intention, or the intention of the virtual reality system of which you are a part, to learn and to grow, well then, you will be provided with experiences to do just that. That does not mean that you will learn, but the opportunity is there to do so.

For example, years ago I realized that I was much too naive, and, consequently, trusted untrustworthy people. So I made a clear intention to learn the true, underlying nature of others, their motivations and personal, hidden agendas. Immediately after I made that my intention  I came across one pathological lier, manipulative, self-serving or conniving person (all with smiling faces and pleasant exterior personalities) after another. How could someone be outwardly nice and inwardly, not nice? Think of white collar criminals, con men, snake oil salesmen. But did I learn? Yes, I am more discerning today.

Even if you are a good, positive person, you can draw painful experiences in order for you (or someone else) to learn. Have you ever wondered why bad things happen to good people?

Here’s another example. About a decade ago, I found that a ‘friend’ and colleague had plagiarized a full eight pages of my stop smoking book. Now I have never plagiarized anyone so I did not deserve this on the basis of karma. In fact, I go out of my way to acknowledge sources. Nor was I focused on fear that someone might steal from me. In fact, I trusted this person as well as my other colleagues to behave differently. So I did not draw this experience on the level of my predominant thoughts (aka Law of Attraction).  I worked hard to do the research myself and the hard work of writing the book, and here comes someone who above all should not mistreat a friend, and a colleague and fellow presenter who above all should set a shining professional standard of behavior. Furthermore, we had just roomed together at a conference where we were both teaching, so this betrayal was a shock.

Yet in meditation, I was informed that it was a soul agreement–that if she did this (not predestined to happen), that I would be the one to confront her and help her to learn not to steal someone else’s intellectual property. But there was also something in it for me–I could learn to more powerfully to stand up for myself and establish better boundaries instead of letting things slide. This understanding enabled me to let go of the anger and to proceed to taking prompt, effective legal and other countermeasures even though it was very time-consuming to do so.

Pain is a great motivator

My original push to study psychology, dowsing and many self-help modalities  was precisely to deal with and stop the stream of unpleasant ‘learning opportunities’ that life dished out. Of course, at the time, I did not perceive such events as an opportunity. But over time, I decided to use them as such. After all, I might as well get something good out of the experience. Why not salvage something out of the debris, right? As a result, that decision, repeated over and over again as new events showed up, was a powerful part of allowing me to mature and move with greater grace and ease through life. It also stopped some of those types of experiences happening again, or slowing me down in an emotional quagmire if they did.

Although only one factor among many, thoughts and emotions absolutely do impact upon what experiences show up and how they affect you. It is not always obvious, nor necessarily a direct correlation, nor necessarily immediate. But sooner or later, they build sufficient momentum to bring a harvest.

The collective mindset

Scientists are more and more talking about the morphogenetic field, and entanglement of consciousness.  This theory says that the consciousness of each of us is tied psychically to the larger whole of humanity. Your thoughts and emotions are added to my own and that this is what can attract a collective (common) experience.

While the humans may not appear to have the same kind of hive mind of a school of fish or swarming ants, it appears that collective human consciousness exists. My mindset is entangled with yours and yours is entangled with mine. Even where they are disagree, even when antithetical, on some level, they are felt, and that will influence our sense of ease or dis-ease, our individual mood, and our choices (congruent or reactive). The most powerful  effect will be felt with those with whom we are in rapport (friends and family), then with those in close association (neighbors, work associates), those with whom we identify, but ultimately with the larger humanity. The commonly held thoughts and emotions in any group, neighborhood, region, even nation can sometimes be felt. Think of any place where a tragedy has taken place like 9/11 or a mass celebration like Christmas, New Year’s Eve or the end of a war.

Applying the Law of Attraction to the Collective

Perhaps this newer scientific understanding of the morphogenetic field and entanglement can be joined with age-old spiritual awareness that you and your brother are one, that what you do to another, you also do to yourself. If we apply Campbell’s idea that we draw experiences collectively as well as individually to learn, and to move from fear to love, let’s learn as fast as we can to jointly experience a nicer, kinder world.

Thoughts Carry a Train

And how to derail that train when you don’t like where it is going!

Today, I heard about the death of a friend’s family member, and also of a hypnosis colleague giving a workshop on how to deal with grief and loss. This brought up some thoughts and memories of my own of how thoughts connect to similar thoughts taking us to a predictable emotional conclusion.

One of my clients was setting up a meeting at Windows on the World restaurant on top of the World Trade Center on 9/11. Located on the 107th floor of the north tower with a conference facility on the 106th floor, with commanding views of the city, it was a popular destination with building occupants, tourists, and city residents (the restaurant served about 800 dinners nightly).

When the first hijacked plane crashed into the north tower at 8:46 am, the restaurant had regular breakfast patrons on the 107th floor and a conference for the Risk Water Group on the 106th floor. About 73 employees and an unidentified number of patrons died in the fire and building collapse. One of my clients, Luke Dudek, was among those killed.

The last time I saw Luke was at a mutual friend’s funeral, that of Rodney DeMichael. Rodney had been on the Board of Advisors for my business, Unlimited Potential. As a dear friend, social worker, counselor, founder and head of the Center for Eating Disorders in Livingston, NJ, Rodney had served  as most valued guide and mentor when I had questions about or needed help with a client, especially where I suspected that such client or prospective client had mental or emotional issues that required specialized professional treatment beyond my expertise as a hypnotherapist.

Rodney had been brought in also to lecture on psychopathology to my advanced, professional hypnotherapy students. When he got ill, he came weekly to the Reiki Sharing Clinic I ran. Over the years, many of my students and graduates worked on him, some even traveling to the hospital during his final stay.

So Luke’s death brought up memories of Rodney’s death, Rodney’s funeral and the silly hat I wore just for his benefit, thoughts about his life, my association with him, my student’s associations with him, and his friends and family. It also brought up times I myself had been at Windows on the World, the magnificent crystals there that were the size of small elephants, the woman (another client) that sold those crystals to the restaurant from her mine in South America, and her crystal shop in Montclair, NJ. Further, Luke’s and Rodney’s deaths also brought up memories of my father’s death, that of other family members, and on and on.

Thoughts hitch to other thoughts that carry you to a predictable emotional destination!

Carolyn Myss once was explaining how to understand someone’s conversation, you have to dig down into your own memory banks for similar associations. So if someone is talking about cupcakes, you have to do an internal search for anything to do with cupcakes yourself just to understand what is being said, let alone to respond.

The outcome is that if you have any emotions tied to any of your cupcake associations, it brings up those old emotions, memories, and all related associations as well.  Anything yet unresolved that is related to the issue or topic at hand as well as to any of the free associations that resurface is added to what is going on now, and it happens in lightning speed much as Alice plunging down the rabbit hole.

Early on in my hypnosis practice, I had a client that taught me how thoughts hitch to other thoughts that carry you to a predictable destination much as coupling train cars together on a pre-determined track. You can clearly foretell the expected emotional outcome from the content of the thoughts if you catch them fast enough. If such thought associations happen often enough, it runs a groove that turns it into a habit.

‘Sarah’ (not her real name) came to me because she was sick, worried and depressed. She had multiple issues: Epstein Barr, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, etc. Not surprisingly when she woke up in the morning, her first thought was “I feel sick.” This connected to another thought, “If I’m sick, then I can’t go to work.” From there, the next thought was “If I can’t go to work, I’ll lose my job.” Next came, “if I lose my job, I’m going to lose my apartment.” Next was, “if I lose my apartment, I’m going to lose custody of my son.” Finally, the thought came, “if I lose my son, I might as well kill myself.” So from the first thought, “I feel sick”, she was rapidly in suicidal depression.

Because this thought pattern happened so frequently, I had to teach her how to derail her train of thoughts to take her to, hopefully, another emotional destination. So for the usual “I feel sick”, therefore, “I can’t go to work”, I taught her to say “at what I usually do. So what can I do?  What can I do from home to earn an income? Oh, I used to be an Editor. Maybe I could call up some of my old contacts and do something with them on the side. Maybe I could do phone solicitation, or stuff envelopes. Maybe I could make arrangements with my current boss to do some of my work from home.”

If Sarah could deliberately change her thought pattern, decouple the usual connections, she would derail her train of thought that was guaranteed to take her into depression to possibly end up somewhere else. And maybe over time she would get ideas that would help her to solve her problems.

What’s my point?

  • As quickly as possible, to the greatest extent possible, clean up your own issues so that they do not add to the burden of dealing with future ones.
  • When old stuff comes up, make a mental note of it, or even better, write it down and deal with it at your earliest convenience, hopefully, that day. Use whatever tools you know: Emotional Freedom Technique, Tapas Acupressure, Emotion Code, Time Line Therapy, self-hypnosis, the Infinite Intelligence Process (my own technique), dowsing, etc. Where you are stuck, hypnotherapists and NLP (Neural Linguistic Programming) practitioners are skilled in helping you change and resolve non-beneficial mental and emotional patterns and limiting beliefs.
  • Deliberately ask a question that sets you off in another direction: “What if ___? How can I ___? If ___ could work, how would it work? Who could help me ___. “
  • Make a statement that while believable, changes the train tracks to another emotional destination For example,  “I’m so grateful for ___. I got through/survived ___ before. I turn this into a blessing. There’s a part of me that knows how to deal with this. I stay focused on the bigger picture. I take it one step at a time.”
  • Make a habit to challenge your assumptions, beliefs and judgments where they have been shown to be non-productive.

It is possible to change your self-talk to help yourself. And while it takes diligence and repetition to run new mental train tracks, it is profoundly worth the effort!

Resolving mental and emotional issues is my specialty. If you need extra help, I am available in person, by phone, and soon, by Skype. Call for an appointment. Free initial phone consultation: 434-263-4337.

Establishing a Dowsing Protocol

Why create a dowsing protocol?

Dowsing with accuracy requires that you be centered, calm, able to focus, detached from the answers, etc.. Consequently, it is helpful to establish a regular procedure that you do before dowsing that becomes fast, even automatic over time. A shortcut yet effective aid is to write out and then install a dowsing program for that purpose. You may wish to make your own or personalize one that someone else has written. But before installing it, review and write out any corrections, deletions, additions first.

The point of a dowsing program, just like a computer program, is that the entire written out contents will activate and function in it’s entirety anytime that you give the short-cut verbal command. The command should be one that is clear in it’s meaning to you and not to be confused with something else. As my preparation to dowse program is called the Master Program, my shortcut command is  ‘Commence Master Program’. The command functions much as hitting any command on your computer with a specific keystroke. If you feel you need extra help beyond just issuing your shortcut command,  you can reread through the program. Alternatively, you could dowse over the entire page/s to locate the specific area that needs to be addressed with conscious awareness.

What is a dowsing program?

A program is one that will serve any regularly recurring need, whether it be for dowsing or any other activity. I suggest that you have one to prepare for the best frame of mind for dowsing accurately. At bare minimum, a preparation to dowse program should include instructions to center, let go of ego, let go of worries and extraneous concerns, align with whatever you consider Universal Consciousness and your true spiritual guidance.

Some of my dowsing colleagues also have programs to find water, clear non-beneficial energies, provide protection, etc. But if, for example, you are a salesman, or an athlete, performer, public speaker, etc., you could create a dowsing program to put you be in the right frame of mind for each of those activities as well.

Who else uses programs with short-cut commands?

Dowsers are not the only ones employing programs with short cut commands or triggers to activate them. Hypnotherapists and Neural Linguistic Programmers also install them and teach their clients how to use them for their own benefit. The activation of such programs (sometimes called an anchor) could be verbal, auditory, visual, olfactory, or include a gesture or movement.

For example, I give all my hypnosis clients a command to re-induce the hypnotic state with a combination of the word “sleep” with a gesture of thumb to forefinger. I can then fire such command on their succeeding visits, and they can use it on their own to induce self-hypnosis. I create another program for feeling confident and capable of meeting challenges with making a fist and the command “yes!”, or sometimes the longer suggestion “I can do whatever I make up my mind to do.” Other programs might be for healthy eating habits, exercising, or to help someone stop smoking.

After I write out the program that includes my short-cut command, how do I install it?

Start out just as you would before any dowsing: take a few deep breaths with the intention of releasing extraneous worries, concerns and other thoughts. Drop the identification with your ego and instead focus on the spiritual core of your being that many call your soul or High Self—that part of you that is goes beyond your limits of your physical being, and is very wise, resourceful, creative, master problem solver, eternal and intrinsically connected to the Source of All That Is that most people call God. Do whatever works to raise your vibration. This may include aromatherapy, prayer, meditation, chanting, thinking of what makes you happy, those you love and of the things for which you are grateful.

Hold the clear intention that your program be installed into your unconscious mind to operate upon your command anytime you choose. Holding the pendulum, read your program out loud focusing intently on what you are saying.

When you are done, say

“End of program. Thank you.”

Then ask “Is this now accepted by my unconscious mind?
Do I need to make any corrections, additions or deletions at this time?”

If the answer is ‘no’, you are done. Start using and see how it works. If you need reinforcement, there is no harm in re-reading your entire program.

Imagery and Healing

Visualizations are powerful ways to communicate internally with the inner mind.  They act as instructions or blueprint for the subconscious mind (that part responsible for our habits, emotions, memories, and all of our body functions) to follow. Images of health or the healing process can assist the body to heal. They communicate “do whatever you need to do to make this happen.”

However, imagining the problem especially with all the upset related to that problem, acts in reverse to what is desired. Also, because we are telepathically connected to others, especially to our friends and family, even our unspoken thoughts and feelings about them can negatively effect them as well.

How can you visualize to only get the desired result?

Create mental pictures showing how to rectify the perceived malfunction or problem.

The images can be symbolic. For example, if there is a broken bone, you might imagine knitting the broken parts together. If there is blockage somewhere, imagine a clean up crew going in and scrubbing the walls of any debris and hosing it safely away, or perhaps imagine a road crew removing the obstruction. If a stroke has occurred, imagine linemen running new electrical lines to get the service through, or policemen redirecting traffic around the flooded area.

Imagery can be broken down to two types: process and end-result.

Any time you think of your illness or condition immediately imagine yourself as either in process of healing or as already healed at some time in the future.

Visual images and emotion are the language of the inner mind. Your inner or subconscious mind controls all of your body functions including your immune response and healing abilities, your habits, memory, creativity, automatic pilot, psychic abilities, and emotions. Imaging is very important in healing. The emotions amplify and drive the image deep into the unconscious mind.

Gerald Epstein, M.D. points out in his book Healing Visualizations, Creating Health Through Imagery, that visualizations have been used for healing in Tibet, India, Africa, Eskimos, American Indians, and ancient Egypt. It was “an essential technique and sometimes the essential medical treatment for physical ailments, until approximately 1650, when natural science and modern medical thinking began to assume dominance.”

Visualizations for healing purposes should be done frequently (minimally three times daily) until results are obtained. Epstein recommends once before breakfast, once after work, and once before bed. He further recommends doing it for 21 days, resting for seven days, then repeating cycles.

What about doubt?

Healing imagery must be free of doubt. Hypnotists have a saying “doubt cancels out.” If you don’t really know if you can heal or solve that problem, ask yourself:

What it would look like if I could heal or solve that problem?

And if I did, how would I feel about it?

Adopt an attitude of wonder. I like the question I adopted from urban redeveloper, James Rouse:

If it could work, how would it work?

Process Imaging

This creates a picture in the mind of the next phase of the healing process. This is particularly appropriate if you are suffering from a gradual, debilitating illness, or an accident that will go through various healing stages.

For example, a person with a broken leg, ankle sprain, or knee or hip replacement, may visualize being able to stand and place his weight on both feet. After that is accomplished, the patient may visualize being able to walk a few steps with a walker, then a cane, being able to walk unaided, and finally running, dancing, playing tennis–any activity the patient enjoyed before the problem.

A person with slow, debilitating condition may imagine the illness reversing itself. What was the last thing he could do? Have him imagine that. Later imagine the step before that one, etc. This may well be more believable than going for the end result imagery.

End Result Imaging

Image yourself (or the patient) being totally healed and doing those things with comfort and joy that was once enjoyed. To do end result imaging, the patient must believe that it is possible. If not, do the next step in healing that you or the patient can imagine comfortably.

Best Time for Healing Visualizations and Prayer

The best time to do this for your own healing is as the last thought before sleep. This thought will dominate the mind until morning. Repeat upon arising because it will set the tone for the entire day.

According to Larry Dossey in his book Healing Words, the best window of opportunity to effect physical change through imagery and prayer is before medical viewing or tests such as X-rays, cat-scans, etc.

Physicists have found that the investigator cannot be removed from the experiment, and that sub-atomic particles (the real origin of disease) can show up either as a particle (mass) or a wave (energy) before viewing. They tend to show up according to the beliefs/ expectations of the investigator.

Before the test, there is malleability.

After the test, the looking, observing and interpreting fixes the event.

Prayer and Healing

While this is an excerpt from my book, Reiki Path to Transformation, Volume 3, it applies to prayer in general, hypnosis, dowsing, energy healing, telepathic healing, etc.

Larry Dossey, M.D. in his best selling book Healing Words, The Power of Prayer and The Practice of Medicine, carefully documents the scientific studies that prove that prayer works. According to his research, prayer works regardless of the distance between the person praying and the one being prayed for, or any electromagnetic influences. “Nothing seemed capable of stopping or blocking prayer. Even when an ‘object’ was placed in a lead-lined room or in a cage that shielded it from all known forms of electromagnetic energy, the effect still got through.”

He classifies prayer that works falls into two categories, non-directed and directed prayer. Both work, but some work better for different personality types.

Non-Directed Prayer

This is prayer on behalf of someone without attachment to a specific outcome. One might simply pray “Thy will be done” while being confident that on some level they are always safe and loved regardless of what happens. Non-directed prayer takes the long view of eternity rather than dwelling on the immediate crises. Yet praying for healing with “Thy will be done” does bring healing to those in immediate crises. Dossey prays “May the best possible outcome prevail.” You might also say “into God’s hands and keeping I place this ___ (person/situation).”

Directed Prayer

This type of prayer very specifically asks for and visualizes specific outcomes. Directed Prayer is combined with clear visual images of what you want plus a positive, confident feeling that it is possible. For example, if a person has a broken leg, you might imagine him at some time in the future running, playing tennis, dancing again with a smile on his face. If you use suggestions like any of those below, be sure to also include mental pictures that indicate that there has been a successful outcome.

  • “Guide the physician’ s knife to completely remove all cancerous growth.” Follow with image of smiling patient living his life in the future and saying “feeling better than ever”
  • “Dissolve and remove all tumor.” Follow with image of popping balloon, and body now vibrantly alive and healthy
  • “Make new neural pathways to carry messages from the brain to the muscles.” Follow with image of smoothe, easy movements.
  • “Reattach the pieces of bone so that it is strong and better than ever.” Follow with image of that happening and person doing whatever fun activity would assume that full healing has taken place.

Prayerfulness

Dossey relates that “a simple attitude of prayerfulness–an all-pervading sense of holiness and a feeling of empathy, caring, and compassion for the entity in need” sets the stage for healing to occur. Countless other spiritual healers agree.

Centering, letting go of other thoughts or distractions and being totally focused are also important. Some healers prepare for healing work by first focusing on their connection with the Divine, on the interrelationship of all living things, and finally, on the perfected state of being they want for their client/ patient in an unconditional loving, compassionate way. Reiki practitioners like other spiritual healers understand that they are only the conduit for the healing energy, but that the source comes from the Source of All That Is.

It is recommended that in addition to the specific concern, that you pray for healing on all levels for that individual. Love those for whom you pray without attachment. In other words, you want what is in their best interest, not yours. You may not know what is best. And especially, pray without any fear. Call in spiritual assistance.

While healing work is done with slow preparation, prayer, in general, can be as fast as a thought and a flash of the healing image. Anytime you think of the sick or challenged person or situation simply imagine a positive outcome with the words, “the best possible outcome prevails.”

Why is it that saints frequently die of awful diseases?

Holiness, empathy and compassion are abundant in saints who are noted for healing others, and yet they themselves may later suffer from the very diseases they have helped alieviate. Dossey says:

“there is no invariable, linear, one-to-one relationship between one’s level of spiritual attainment and the degree of one’s physical health.”

Some people may knowingly or not take on the sufferings of others. Empaths may focus on the problem and identify with the suffering, feeling it in their own bodies.

At the end your day, disconnect from preoccupation with both your own problems and that of others. Imagine that on some level everyone is fine and in perfect health. Break all psychic links with the sick and troubles in the world. Go to sleep feeling gratitude, thinking of someone or some thing that makes you happy. These uplifting thoughts will stay with you through the night, assisting your sleep so that you have the energy to be of service tomorrow.

Aligning Prayer with Self-Hypnosis Principles

Prayer follows the same steps as does self-hypnosis: you must ask for the positive thing that you want in the present tense (not some future time), and believe that it is possible to receive that for which you are praying. Prayer is a focused call for help and an expectation of receiving that help. State your request as follows:

  1. Word your request in the present tense, i.e., “My body is healing now” (don’t say ‘will’ heal because your inner mind does not act on future tense). Or use the good for all suggestion, “Everyday in every way I get better and better.”
  2.  Use only positive words of what you want to happen, not what you don’t want to happen. For example, instead of praying to be less tense or fearful, pray to be calm and relaxed.
  3. Word your prayer only in a way that is believable. If you pray for something and at the same time doubt that it can happen, your doubt will cancel out your request. If you cannot believe in or imagine a cure, imagine the next step that you do believe can happen. For example, if a person is in a hospital bed with a broken leg in a cast, imagine him home on crutches, using a walker, or walking with a cane. Make a picture of the best outcome you can imagine. Later, go beyond that as your belief enlarges.
  4. If you are doing directed prayer, be specific about that for which you are praying without being inflexible. Some people finish their prayer with “this or something better” or “according to my/his/their highest good.”
  5. Engage your positive emotions and faith in your request being granted. Believe that it is possible.
  6. Turn your request over to God (release it) with confidence that you are heard and that your request (quite small in comparison to creating the universe) is infinitely within the Creator’s power.

COMMON STEPS FOR PRAYER HEALING WORK

Purification

Cleanse the body with fasting, prayer, sweat lodges, juicing, bathing. Cleanse the thoughts and emotions. Be silent. Wait with patience. Isolate the self in meditation or retreat, nature, vision quests, away from distractions or ordinary life. Take corrective action for any wrong action. Ask forgiveness of others. Make restitution.

Holding a Willingness to Heal, Change or Release

Come into alignment with thoughts or actions that lead to health. Ask Spirit to remove any blocks known or unknown to your full healing now. Be willing to surrender your pet negative judgments, resentments, anger and fears. Be also willing to clean up your relationships, examine yourself honestly, eliminate your delusions, addictions and self-destructive habits.

Healing always requires change.

Chinese medicine believes that illness is synonymous with blockages of flow, with resistance to change.Remember that it was patterns, habits of mind or body repeated over time that created the problem. There is also a relationship between real or imagined unscrupulous behavior with its resulting guilt and call for self-punishment, and with illness. “The body doesn’t lie.” Ask for guidance to know what to do, change or release.

• Knowing

Know with certainty that the help you seek is present, that answers or solutions already exist, that the thing you pray for already exists. This becomes self-fulfilling prophecy.

• Union

Become one with what you are praying for. Become one with the power, wisdom, love of whom you are praying. Become one with whom you are praying.

• Making the request

Ask and listen for spiritual guidance, divine intervention, healing and help. You can also ask for a clear sign what is right and when it is right.

• Giving thanks

Give thanks that the request is already granted before the results are seen. Giving thanks sets up an attitude of gratitude which is always a blessing to us. It also gives us hope and encourages us to continue to take positive action. It strengthens our belief and faith.

• Taking appropriate action

Do your part of whatever seems needed or appropriate increases faith. It is acting as if it is going to happen.

• Illumination, or receiving the answer

Rollo May in his book,  The Courage to Create, said that mental breakthroughs or creative insight come after a period of intense concentration and then mental rest.

 • Charging

Charging means lending an emotional charge to your intention. For this you need

  • an idea,
  • an image representing that idea, and
  • emotional energy to carry that idea to fruition. I recommend you use love, gratitude, joy.

• Connect to the Source of healing energy

Send this energy to the person or situation you want to receive it. Imagine the person/s connected directly to this energy source.

• Break psychic contact with the person for whom you are praying and the problem

Life Provides Three Kinds of Teachers

Somewhere I heard that a tribe of the American Indians consider that we can have three kinds of teachers.

The Positive Teacher

The first kind of teacher is one that teaches us by their positive example. Their words and life demonstrate in a most wonderful way how to be, how to live, and what is really important. They provide answers to the big questions of life. Not only is their teaching true and helpful, but they walk their talk. You are truly blessed if you have this shining example in your life as a guide.

However, the downside is that their teaching can be taken on faith without examination. Their lessons may be learned by rote. With unquestioning acceptance of what is said, their student may not learn how to learn, how to find the answers to what was not provided, how to discern and evaluate information. They may not learn how to handle or adapt to changing times or situations not encountered by their teacher. There is also a potential danger of remaining dependent on the teacher instead of growing in maturity and going beyond to develop a strong connection to the Source of all wisdom and truth on their own.

If you are accustomed to simply accepting what you are told and later meet an imperfect teacher, or imperfect followers of the perfect teacher, or if your teacher who had previously been a shining example gets caught up in ego and deviates from the path, you may not have developed your power of discernment to prevent you from also being led astray. Or you may chuck the whole teaching, throwing out what was good and valuable as well as what was not.

Another possibility is that although the teacher of the positive example found answers that were right for their own life and faithfully reported them to you, what was right for them may not be right for you or right at this point in time. You still have to process what you are being taught and told through the still small voice within you.

The Negative Teacher

The second type of teacher is someone who teaches you how to be and how to live by providing a strong example of how not to be or how not to live. Those who present the negative path are also very powerful teachers and can push you to self-reliance. By alienating you, they have freed you from dependency and having to conform to their ideas in order to please them. In so doing, you may learn to listen to your own heart and set a better course for yourself.

For example, if a parent abandons his children, you, as one of those children, may make a commitment to never abandon your own children because you experienced first hand the pain of that experience. As a result, your own children are blessed with the security that you will never leave them. If you had been around someone who taunted, humiliated, or verbally degraded you, you may learn to always think before you speak and to respect the feelings of others. This makes you nicer to be around. However, just because you may be gifted with a painful experience that has the potential to teach you much,

learning is optional and never guaranteed.

The downside to the negative example is that you may simply judge and condemn this kind of teacher without ever finding the positive lesson. You may dwell in anger, bitterness or resentment, and may, unwittingly become like the very person you detest.

The Coyote Teacher

The third type is the coyote teacher that provides conflicting and confusing messages.  They give you both good and bad. They may say one thing but do another, or adhere to certain principles in one area while living/acting differently in another. Consequently, their message is confusing. They may give you only part of what you need and want to know. They sometimes tell you things that are true and helpful, but they may also tell you things that are false or hurtful, providing both positive and negative examples. The bottom line is that the Coyote forces you to dig down deep inside of yourself to find the answers for yourself. The gift that can potentially come out of this is for you sort through the mess to find your own truth and wisdom.

All types of teachers have value.

As you think of your parents, family members, school teachers, friends and associates, you may have witnessed examples all three kinds of teachers in your life already. The point is:

LEARN FROM ALL OF THEM!

The moment you learn, the moment you find the blessing, it takes the sting out of painful experiences and relationships, and removes confusion and discord. It also leads to greater understanding, acceptance and tolerance.

Ask yourself:

Is what I am hearing true? Is it always true? Can I still trust this message?

Is this example trustworthy, something that I want to emulate?

What can I learn from this person, this relationship, this interchange, positive or negative?

What is good that I admire and respect?

What is the positive opposite of what I am witnessing that I do not admire or respect, or dislike?

How can I use the words, message, example, positive or negative, of this person to be a better person myself?

What is the message others are getting from my life, my words and actions, my example?

Derailing the Train to Negative Emotions

How to Recognize and Interrupt the Downward Spiral!

Emotions follow thought. As you notice your thoughts, you can predict their emotional outcome, and deliberately shift them to get to a more desirable emotional end result. Thought substitution is an easy way to do this because you cannot think of two things at once.

Thought substitution is NOT to deny your ‘negative’ thoughts or feelings. It is not being a Pollyanna or sticking your head in the sand. But it is a shift in focus to what you can do, to what you do want to create, and on the priorities of the moment. It is a shift to possibility thinking. And it can start off as simply holding a question or statement in mind.

WHY DO THIS?
1. Some, perhaps many, of your thoughts, beliefs, judgments as well as those of others can be unsubstantiated, unchallenged, and quite possibly untrue. So why stress yourself out if you don’t know for sure?

2. You may not really know your true limits. Your beliefs and the beliefs of others that you listen to can be stopping you before you really test those limits.

3. You may not be harnessing your inner resources without which you can never know what can or cannot be achieved.

4. The negative opinion of others (even that of experts) can be wrong. Remember that people thought that the earth was flat, and that you would drop off if you sailed too far. Remember also that it was thought that it was impossible to run a mile under 4 minutes. Then Roger Bannister came along.

5. Finally, you understand the precious quality of your mind to create reality, and choose not to squander it’s energy, but to work to create only a life, world that you want, instead of what you don’t want.
